Cannon Fodder In Apocalypse: I Rule With Sanctuary Evolution System
Chapter 114: Zombie Tide
Jin Rong’s expression changed, and he was about to say something when Ni Mengxue clapped her hands once.
"Mr. Whoever-You-Are, leave now. I was entertaining you until now because my lover wasn’t ready to talk to me, but now that he has given me his ultimatum, I don’t want to see you for even a second."
Jin Rong stared at Lu Yucai with hatred in his eyes.
He quickly turned back to Ni Mengxue and forced a pleading expression onto his face.
"Miss Ni, please don’t rush to make a conclusion. I am very useful. I can cook, I can clean, I can even..."
"Do you want me to slash your throat and kill you once and for all?"
Ni Mengxue’s cold words instantly silenced him.
The people surrounding them froze as well.
They had watched the entire scene from the beginning. Until now, many of them had thought Ni Mengxue was selfish, heartless, and shameless for mistreating her four husbands.
But seeing how completely detached she was toward Jin Rong, even going as far as threatening to kill him, made them reconsider.
It seemed that she had truly fallen in love with Lu Yucai.
Otherwise, why would she reject another man so decisively?
Someone in the crowd couldn’t help but whisper,
"Ni Mengxue might not be a good woman, but she is certainly a loyal one. Why is she still hanging around her one husband? If this continues, won’t she miss the chance to marry someone more compatible?"
Others initially gave him strange looks, but after thinking about it, they slowly realized that his words did make sense.
Before the apocalypse, marriage and relationships had been personal matters.
But after the apocalypse, with the population declining rapidly, the government had introduced laws to encourage reproduction.
Someone in the crowd suddenly called out,
"Miss Ni, please don’t rush to reject everyone. You’re about to turn twenty-six. If you don’t have a registered partner by the age of twenty-six, the state can assign you a husband."
Ni Mengxue smiled faintly in the direction of the voice.
"I am in no rush, and I will look after myself. You don’t need to tell me what I can or cannot do."
The person who had spoken earlier couldn’t help shouting,
"Ni Mengxue, don’t be stupid! Are you really planning to stay with these four husbands and never marry anyone else?"
Everyone looked at her eagerly. Ni Mengxue merely gave a faint smile. "Yes, I am."
The crowd fell silent.
"For me, these four are enough. And honestly, it’s already my own greed that I’m keeping all four of them. If I were truly some kind of saint, I would have devoted myself to only one husband instead of wanting all four of them at the same time. So no, I’m not a saint."
She paused and gently placed her hand on the handle of Lu Yucai’s wheelchair. "My greed is already satisfied with them."
With that, she began wheeling Lu Yucai away.
Someone shouted after her, "Are you saying you’ll stay with these four husbands for the rest of your life? What if they die?"
Ni Mengxue chuckled. "I’ll die too."
Her voice was calm, without the slightest hesitation.
She wouldn’t make a promise that she would continue living even if one of her husbands died. She had already experienced what it meant to lose them once.
It had been unbearable.
If fate took them from her again, she would follow them.
She would rather die alongside them than continue living in a world where they no longer existed.
The sincerity in her words was so obvious that the people surrounding them fell silent.
For the first time, many of them felt that perhaps Ni Mengxue wasn’t as terrible as they had thought.
Mo Beichan, however, clenched his fists.
His mind immediately went to Su Yao, and a faint resentment rose in his heart.
Meng Xiaoni was truly lucky.
Ni Mengxue, despite being considered a villain in his eyes, had committed herself to only four husbands.
Compared to Su Yao, who already had twenty husbands and still seemed willing to accept another one, the difference was enormous.
She always had one, two, or even three more options waiting for her.
She even kept five backup candidates, and if that wasn’t enough, she would travel elsewhere and return with another husband.
Ni Mengxue was different. She had chosen her four husbands and seemed determined to stay with them.
Mo Beichan didn’t love Ni Mengxue.
But at that moment, he couldn’t help wishing that Su Yao had the same kind of loyalty.
When they returned to the villa they were staying in, Lu Yucai softly called out, "Mengxue... "
Ni Mengxue leaned closer to him. "Hmm?"
Lu Yucai smiled faintly. "Thank you."
Ni Mengxue looked at him quietly.
"Thank you for always siding with me and for loving us this much. But I hope you will..."
She immediately interrupted him. "Don’t tell me not to die."
Lu Yucai fell silent.
"I truly couldn’t live a life without any of you."
As she spoke, she continued pushing his wheelchair.
After a moment, Lu Yucai suddenly asked, "What if only one of us dies while the other three are still alive?"
Ni Mengxue smiled. "Then I’ll die with the one who died."
She wasn’t lying.
She knew she would struggle to watch even one of her husbands leave her behind. She also knew it would be painful to leave the other three alive.
But the thought of one of them being alone in the afterlife was even more unbearable.
’If any one of you dies first, I will follow.’
Lu Yucai’s fingers tightened around the armrests. He didn’t say anything else.
After Ni Mengxue and her team returned, everyone rested for the evening.
The next day, they continued hunting the remaining mutated beasts.
The mutated animal tide lasted only about a day and a half, mainly because so many base residents volunteered to fight.
Once the fighting subsided, Ni Mengxue immediately checked the condition of her own base.
Sure enough, the zombie tide had also arrived there.
Through the connection with her base, she could see the battle taking place in real time.
Her people were fighting with everything they had.
Ni Mengxue watched silently, her expression gradually becoming serious.
The members of the base had divided themselves into five teams.
Team One stood at the front, directly facing the approaching zombies.
Teams Two and Three were positioned just behind them, ready to reinforce the front line whenever necessary.
Teams Four and Five served as emergency teams, responsible for dealing with any zombies that managed to break through the defenses.
The base had also prepared several traps around the battlefield.
Deep pits had been dug and concealed beneath the ground, while an electric wire grid had been set up around the more vulnerable areas.
They also had a laser gun that could be used against stronger zombies.
The battlefield had been carefully prepared.
Yet even with all these preparations, casualties were unavoidable.
Among the fighters was a group of four men... Harry, Wilson, Kong Ming, and Dai Xi.
They were all gay and had been in a consensual polygamous relationship long before the apocalypse. They had different personalities, but they cared deeply for one another.
Harry was the eldest and the most responsible of the four.
He had a broad build and a calm temperament and naturally took charge whenever they encountered danger.
Wilson was tall and slender, with a gentle personality.
He was usually the one who kept everyone calm whenever arguments broke out.
Kong Ming was quiet and serious, rarely speaking unless necessary.
He had excellent judgment and was particularly good at observing the battlefield.
Dai Xi was the youngest and most hot-tempered of the four.
He had a cheerful personality outside of battle, but once he started fighting, he became extremely aggressive.
They had originally been assigned to Team Five as an emergency unit.
However, when the front line came under heavy pressure, they were temporarily sent to reinforce Team Two.
That was where everything went wrong.
The four of them were separated when a group of zombies suddenly broke through the defensive line.
"Harry!"
Wilson’s voice rang through the battlefield.
Harry turned around just in time to see a zombie pounce toward him. He raised his weapon to block it, but another zombie came from his blind spot.
Its claws pierced through his chest.
Harry’s body stiffened.
"Harry!"
Wilson rushed toward him, but Kong Ming grabbed his arm. "Don’t!"
The moment Kong Ming pulled him back, the zombie lunged again.
Harry’s body disappeared beneath the swarm. Wilson stood frozen. For several seconds, he couldn’t move.
Dai Xi stared at the scene in disbelief before his expression twisted with fury. "Harry!"
He charged forward recklessly.
"Xi, stop!"
Kong Ming tried to stop him, but Dai Xi had already lost control.
He swung his weapon wildly, killing one zombie after another as he pushed deeper into the battlefield.
