CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 277: THE FIRST FEATHER OF THE ARCANA
The central arcane tower of the inner citadel hummed with soft, spatial vibrations as the fifty-one citadel mages gathered upon its high terrace. Unlike the battle-hardened legions who had marched into the brutal trial pyramids, these scholars and spell-weavers stood quietly in their dark robes, their hands resting upon runic focus-staffs.
Caius stood before them, the Three-Eyed Crow perched gracefully upon his shoulder, its cosmic third eye glowing with deep, spatial luminescence. Old Bones stood half a step behind, his dark eyes observing the arcane assembly.
"Your minds are the structural anchor of this citadel," Caius declared smoothly, his voice carrying an unyielding, sovereign weight. "You will not bleed in the trial arenas, nor will you be culled for muscle. You require precision, spatial awareness, and absolute control over the realm's dimensional threads."
Caius raised his hand, gesturing to the divine entity on his shoulder. "You shall cultivate directly beneath the guidance of the Three-Eyed Crow."
The Three-Eyed Crow let out a clear, melodious cry that echoed through the terrace. Fifty-one shimmering, ink-black feathers detached from its wings, drifting through the air to gently sink into the chests of the fifty-one mages.
There was no agonizing flesh-crafting or physical mutilation. Instead, a cooling wave of dual-mana surged into their mana cores, slowly converting their standard spell reserves into a rare hybrid of spatial darkness and solar light.
"This is not a trial of survival, but a path of arcane ascension," Caius instructed. "To become true Crow Arcane Masters, a spellcaster must cultivate and manifest nine divine feathers upon their robes. Today, your training begins."

For one full month, the fifty-one mages withdrew into the high tower, completely devoted to spatial cultivation and barrier-weaving.
Under the passive aura of the Three-Eyed Crow, they learned to rewrite spell matrices from the ground up. They stopped casting traditional elemental barriers, instead learning to weave folded spatial wards that bent incoming physical and magical force into pocket sub-dimensions. They stabilized the spatial-linked communication pings connecting Æthrynn to the Home Realm, turning the city's defense grid into an unbreakable spatial net.
When the thirty-day mark arrived, a synchronized pulse of spatial energy erupted across the high terrace.
At the front of the circle, the lead archmage gasped as his core flared with refined dual-mana. The single feather bound to his soul manifested physically, emerging from his chest to weave itself permanently into the collar of his dark velvet robes as a gleaming, obsidian-and-gold feather.
One by one, across all fifty-one mages, a single ethereal obsidian feather materialized upon their mantles, radiating a sharp aura of folded space and solar warmth.
Old Bones stepped forward, inspecting the faint spatial distortion lingering around the mages' fingertips.
"One month of focused arcane cultivation, and all fifty-one have successfully earned their First Feather," Old Bones murmured, an approving glint in his eyes. "They can already fold local space to redirect heavy artillery. Once they reach all nine feathers and achieve true Arcane Master status, their spatial barriers will be capable of swallowing entire armies whole."
Caius looked over the transformed circle of First-Feather Crow Adepts, his golden-and-obsidian eyes reflecting the cold light of their new spatial robes.
"They have taken their first step," Caius said calmly, turning back toward the grand overview of his fortified realm. "Maintain their cultivation schedules. When the army from the Home Realm arrives in eleven months, our spatial grid will be absolute."
