CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 269: THE NINE-POINTED CITADEL
Before the first stone of the new capital was laid upon the central plateau, the vanguard returned.
Across the red scrublands, the steady, rhythmic march of heavy boots heralded the arrival of the purging legion. Out of the twenty-one thousand bead-bound soldiers who had been dispatched across Æthrynn to wipe out the remaining pockets of Nerathil corruption, twelve thousand six hundred made their way up the rise. Their armor was battered, their blades notched and stained with black, dried ichor, but their eyes burned with absolute, unyielding discipline.
At the head of the column marched the red-haired general, his forehead glinting with the subtle shimmer of his spatial bead. He halted before Caius and Old Bones, dropping heavily to one knee and driving his gauntleted fist into the dirt.
"We have returned triumphantly, God-King!" the red-haired general reported, his voice booming over the wind. "The realm has been thoroughly cleansed. The last remnants of the rot have been put to the sword."
Caius looked down at the blood-soaked legionnaires, a cold, satisfied nod acknowledging their effort. "Good. Very good. Your men have earned their blood, but their work is not finished. They will lay the first foundations of our new fortress."
Beside him, Old Bones let out a dry, rattling chuckle, stepping forward with his hands folded into his dark sleeves. "Indeed. Welcome, Grand Engineer, upon your triumphant return. Swap your sword for a trowel, the Sovereign has grand designs."
The red-haired general merely grunted, accepting the new command without a flicker of hesitation.
Within days, word of the purging legion’s return and the God-King’s intention to build his sovereign seat spread like wildfire across the three major cities of Æthrynn. The response was immediate and borderline hysterical. Thousands of native citizens, driven by fanatical devotion for the life-giving Healing Trees, flooded the roads. They begged, wept, and pleaded with the Keepers of the Tree for the privilege to bleed for their god.
Over two hundred thousand men and women gathered on the central plateau, bringing their own tools, beasts of burden, and stone-carving chisels.
Caius shrugged carelessly as he watched the vast crowd prepare their quarrying kits. "Never refuse gifts. Tools are tools, Steward, use them."
Not wanting to be outdone by the native Æthrynn or the returning human legionnaires, the elite cohorts divided the burden with practiced efficiency:
The Orc Obsidian Elites: Towering eight to nine feet tall, one thousand muscle-bound green behemoths hauled gargantuan slabs of solid granite across the plateau as if they were light bricks. Right in the middle of the dust sat their six-foot-tall general under a crimson silk canopy, basking lazily under the red sun while casually sipping tea. He occasionally gestured with his tea cup toward a crooked monolith, causing a nine-foot orc to sprint over and align it with panicked precision.
The Barbarians: Working directly alongside the orcs, the One Hundred and Three Barbarians swung massive iron sledges and hauled heavy foundation timbers, their boisterous roars turning the grueling labor into a furious contest of brute strength.
The Dark Elves: To feed this colossal workforce, the One Hundred and Three Dark Elves took absolute control of the food supplies. Moving like silent phantoms through Æthrynn's wilderness, they hunted down massive native beasts and organized precise rationing networks, ensuring the encampment never ran short.
The Mages: Stationed along the rising battlements, Fifty Mages hovered above the scaffolding, chanting in low unison to weave intricate binding wards and protective runes into every single granite block as it was set in place.

The Arachne Drones: Beneath the surface, thousands of chitinous Arachne drones swarmed through the bedrock. Using razor-sharp mandibles and reinforced silk weaves, they silently carved, hollowed, and polished the sprawling multi-level underground city, subterranean halls, and vault networks beneath the plateau.
Old Bones watched the coordinated chaos with a subtle twitch of his dark eyebrow. "A truly grueling display of leadership from the orc general, wouldn't you say, my Sovereign?"
Caius smirked. "If the orcs move twice as fast under his lazy gaze, he can drink all the tea he wants."
Under the combined effort of the legion, the elite cohorts, the Arachne drones, and the fanatical locals, the plateau transformed into the greatest construction site in the realm’s history.
The location was chosen with ruthless strategic precision. The plateau sat at the exact geographic center of Æthrynn, precisely two days' hard march from each of the world's three major spatial gateways. To protect the heart of his power, Caius designed a double-ringed defense. A thick, towering outer wall enclosed the entire perimeter of the plateau, while a second, even more formidable inner wall guarded the core citadel. The massive span between the outer and inner rings was engineered as a military staging ground, housing vast drill fields, gladiator-style combat arenas, administrative zones, and secure compounds for foreign envoys.
Four massive gates breached the outer walls, anchoring four great arterial highways paved with polished black basalt:
The North Gate: A direct black basalt road cutting across the northern plains straight to the First Gate, the war path leading to the Nerathil and the Mandrakes.
The East Gate: A black highway leading straight into the volcanic ridges toward the sealed Second Gate.
The West Gate: A basalt road extending directly west to the Third Gate, the portal to Commander Altan’s Gale Realm.
The South Gate: The primary civilian and trade avenue, branching southward toward the three major cities of Æthrynn, with a secondary branch leading toward outer realm exits and the direct path back to the Home Realm.
At the very center of the inner ring rose the heart of the fortress: a colossal earthen mound crowned by a sweeping, Mayan-style main pyramid. At the base of this central pyramid lay a vast, paved plaza. In the middle of the plaza sat a still, pitch-black pool filled with dark-inked water. At the center of the dark pool was a small, circular island where a massive Dual Energy Tree bloomed, casting a radiant golden canopy shadowed by swirling violet-black mist over the water.
Surrounding the central plaza were nine smaller pyramids, precisely arranged to form a massive nine-pointed star formation. Each pyramid sat atop the subterranean city carved by the Arachne, functioning as multi-level underground fortresses equipped with living quarters, training vaults, armories, and specialized halls, including one allocated as barracks for the bead-bound warrior societies.
Seven of the nine pyramids were carved with intricate glyphs, sweeping bas-reliefs, and massive obsidian statues dedicated to Caius’s bound summons:
The Pyramid of the Arachne Princess: Adorned with delicate, razor-sharp lattice carvings representing crown-level solar silk and spatial binding threads.
The Pyramid of the Black Flame Demon: Inscribed with swirling hellfire runes depicting infernal darkness infused with blinding solar heat.
The Pyramid of the Black Sabre-Tiger: Carved with lunging feline statues surrounded by jagged, violet lightning iconography crowned with white kinetic plasma.
The Pyramid of the Shadow Knight: Flanked by massive armored sentinels, its stone walls etched with kinetic defensive matrices reinforced by radiant solar preservation.
The Pyramid of the Obsidian Seraph: Crowned with towering, feathered wing reliefs depicting lunar celestial power elevated by golden solar authority.
The Pyramid of the Shadow Wolf: Etched with depictions of hunting packs running through a celestial shadow domain interwoven with threads of pure solar light.
The Pyramid of the Eclipsed Tri-Ocular Sovereign: Decorated with terrifying, multi-eyed raven motifs symbolizing void perception merged with solar-necrotic eclipse power.
The remaining two pyramids were left entirely smooth, blank, uncarved monoliths of raw black stone waiting silently for future ascensions and new summons yet to be forged.
Standing atop the central pyramid beside the dark pool, Caius looked out over the sprawling ringed walls, the black basalt roads, and the endless army of laborers methodically raising his citadel block by block.
Beside him, Old Bones looked down at the blueprints resting in his hands, a thin, approving smile touching his dark lips. "A true Forward Sovereign Fortress," the dark elf steward murmured. "When this is finished, the Mandrakes won't be invading Æthrynn. They will be throwing themselves against an anvil of black iron and divine stone."
