CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 258: THE PRICE OF DAWN

When the ash finally settled over the crimson valley, the miraculous reality of the battlefield became clear. Against all odds, there were no permanent losses among the defending host.

This impossible survival rate was entirely due to the surgical, cold perfection of Caius’s command timing. The moment the Æthrynn levies and the Bead-Bound wings began to bow under the sheer crush of numbers, Caius had deployed his high-tier puppets and grand Court summons at the exact critical juncture.

The moment the summons hit the earth, they initiated a brutal, synchronized brooming maneuver. High Lord Lorien anchored the core while the Chieftain puppets and the five sovereign summons swept across the field like a giant, unstoppable broom, clearing away thousands of Nerathil in wide, sweeping arcs before the mortal ranks could be overwhelmed or broken. Severe wounds and shattered bones were plentiful, but with the pressure instantly lifted and Caius’s solar arrays stabilizing the fallen, not a single defender perished.

Old Bones immediately took charge of organizing the spoils of war. Swarming across the sprawling battleground, thousands of Arachne drones—their bodies glowing with purified sun mana—began processing the field. Because the Nerathil corpses were infused with toxic shadow rot, the spider-craftsmen could not consume the flesh. Instead, they methodically excised every usable mana core, stripped the iron plating, and dragged the rotting carcasses into towering mounds of gore and charred chitin.

By midnight, hundreds of massive bonfires were lit across the plains. The burning piles of blighted beasts illuminated the night sky, casting a brilliant golden glare across the mountain range that burned away the last lingering vapors of shadow rot and boiling blood.

Amid the burning mounds, the grand harvest was delivered to the top of the ziggurat. Ten massive, pulsating beast cores—each the size of a carriage, extracted from the hearts of the fallen iron Behemoths—were brought before Caius. Sensing the sheer density of condensed energy within them, Caius swept his hand, storing them within his Dimension Bead for future refinement.

In the days that followed, the citadel exploded into unprecedented celebration. The lingering fear of immediate extinction was gone. Powered by the Sun Calamity Forge and armed with thread-hardened weapons, the surviving Æthrynn warriors organized into mobile warbands, fanning out into the outer reaches of the realm to hunt down and purge the scattered remnants of the Nerathil horde. Full eradication of the beasts would take years of hard fighting, but for the first time in centuries, the people of the slate-gray skin were no longer prey. They had an army, a god, and a real chance at survival.

At the flat apex of the central pyramid, far above the celebrating streets, Caius sat in a deep lotus position. Hovering directly before his chest was one of the colossal, carriage-sized Behemoth cores. To truly defeat the Nerathil, to understand the origin of their apocalyptic force and their connection to the Mordrakh, he needed to know what they were at a foundational level. And to understand the Nerathil... he had to absorb them.

Caius closed his eyes and unleashed his Crown Threads, plunging them deep into the core's throbbing heart. The reaction was instantaneous.

Above the pyramid, the clear sky violently fractured. Massive, ink-black clouds condensed out of thin air, swirling into a suffocating vortex directly over the ziggurat. Unholy crimson lightning crackled through the dark tempest, blocking out the sun and plunging the entire city back into unnatural twilight.

Down in the streets, the celebrations ground to a dead halt. The Æthrynn people looked up at the terrifying, unnatural storm, trembling in sheer panic. Thousands dropped to their knees on the stone avenues, weeping and praying desperately, terrified of whatever apocalyptic omen was taking form above their god's throne.
