CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 243: THE TIGHTENING TETHER

From his elevated command post, Caius watched the tide of iron, feathers, and blood crash across the valley floor. Beside him, Old Bones sat on a folding stool, idly sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup with the refined, dark-skinned fingers of his prime dark elf physique. With a flick of his wrist, Caius signaled the main Expeditionary Cohort to move down the slope, taking up a terrifying, stoic position directly behind the advancing 20,000-strong Tethered Army.

Below, the chaotic mob of 15,000 slaves threw themselves into the bird-head ranks with wild, untamed desperation. But in the center, the wild-red-haired warrior was a beacon of cold, unnatural discipline. Barking orders through the bloody dust, Red Hair rallied his 5,000-strong unit, shifting their square formation into a sharp, aggressive wedge designed to pierce the heart of the avian center.

Caius’s Eye of the Loom narrowed, instantly calculating the tactical vector. Overextension, Caius analyzed coldly. If that wedge punches fifty yards deeper, the avian flanks will collapse inward and swallow his five thousand whole.

Reaching out through the Crown Core, Caius channeled his voice directly into the black essence beads embedded in the foreheads of Red Hair and his captains. "HOLD!"

The command resonated inside their skulls with the weight of an absolute sovereign decree. Red Hair froze mid-swing, instantly raising his bloodied sword to halt his men. The entire 5,000-man wedge ground to a sudden, rigid stop, holding their ground like a stone pillar amidst the surrounding chaos.

Caius channeled his aura further, projecting his voice across the entire 20,000-strong tethered host. "Flanks, align with the center! Hold the line! If any group overextends or breaks formation, I will personally hang your severed heads from the ceiling of my prison studs!"

The threat echoed with terrifying clarity. To the tethered slaves, the threat of Caius’s wrath was infinitely worse than the spears of the bird-heads before them. Terrified into absolute obedience, the 15,000 chaotic slaves on the left and right immediately curbed their reckless charge, pulling back to lock their shields beside Red Hair’s central block, forming a unified, unbroken wall.

Across the field, the avian commander watched his trap fail. With five thousand of his front lines already slaughtered, he raised a golden feather-staff and signaled his high shamans.

A piercing, unnatural shriek echoed across the sky. From the surrounding cliffs, thousands of winged avians took flight, raining down from above like a storm of feathered arrows, spears, and elemental wind-blades aimed directly at the tethered frontline.

"Archmage Vaelen," Caius ordered softly into his radio-link. "Cover the tethered host. Purge the sky."

Behind the main legion, Archmage Vaelen and his fifty Arcane Mages raised their spatial-crystal staffs in unison. Within seconds, a massive, translucent Obsidian Ward stretched across the sky over the 20,000 tethered slaves, deflecting the rain of incoming projectiles into harmless ripples of light.

Before the airborne avians could pull out of their dive, the Assault Mages unleashed synchronized salvos of tracking flame-lances and lightning spikes. The sky ignited in a terrifying display of arcane firepower, raining charred, screaming bird-heads down onto the rocks below.

Seeing his aerial strike completely wiped out, the avian commander’s face twisted in desperate rage. He raised his staff high, screeching a final, frantic command.

High above the avian rear guard, the fabric of space began to warp violently. A massive, jagged spatial rift tore open in mid-air, crackling with dark, unfamiliar energy as heavy, oppressive presences began to step through the threshold.

Caius took a slow sip of his tea, his violet eyes reflecting the tear in reality.

"So," Caius murmured with a dark, expectant smirk, "they finally reveal their hand."
