CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 219: THE THIRTEEN VANGUARD

  • Next Chapter

The air in the subterranean forge remained thick with the scent of ozone, burnt blood, and dark spatial mana. Grand Commander Teryn stood at Caius’s right hand, his newly forged cherub-sized obsidian wings hovering behind his shoulders in a tight, kinetic hum. His twin-gold eyes glowed with celestial flame as he looked down at the twenty captains lined up before the mirror-polished obsidian floor. High in the shadows of the gallery above, Old Bones watched silently, his heart hammering as he prepared to witness the next stage of Caius's dark engineering.

At the center of the vault, a heavy iron chest slid open with a metallic groan, revealing the harvested monster cores and dense, impact-absorbing skeletal plates of Voidfang Behemoths, colossal abyssal monsters renowned for swallowing kinetic momentum whole.

"Your commander was forged for aerial dominance and spatial precision," Caius declared, his voice echoing off the basalt walls with clinical coldness. "Your frames will be built for impenetrable defense and crushing momentum. You shall become the vanguard, the Shadow Knights of the Obsidian Order."

Without a single second of hesitation, all twenty captains stripped away their chest armor and offered their bodies to the vault array.

Caius flicked his fingers, signaling the six-armed Arachne weaversmith. In a blur of silver and black silk, the weaver shot hundreds of taut Arachne threads that hooked into the warriors' limbs, hoisting all twenty men four feet into mid-air stasis above the obsidian floor.

They hung in zero-gravity cruciform alignment, their chests bare, their eyes burning with fanatic resolve.

Caius raised both gauntleted hands, erupting in pitch-black Calamity Forge flames. He incinerated the residual instincts of the Voidfang Behemoths, melting their cores into liquid silver-black spatial lightning.

"Weave!" Caius commanded.

Black spatial needles pierced through skin, bone, and muscle simultaneously across all twenty suspended bodies. The agony was instant and apocalyptic. Screams tore from twenty throats as human muscle fibers were stripped away, replaced with Obsidian Lattice sinews and custom Kinetic Absorption nodes mapped directly into their nervous systems.

Midway through the violent synthesis, the sheer, crushing pressure of the Behemoth cores proved too great for two of the warriors.

CRACK.

With a sickening detonation of kinetic force, the meridians of two captains shattered completely. Their bodies dissolved into plumes of pitch-black void ash before ever touching the floor, their sacrifices vanishing harmlessly into the room's mana arrays. Teryn didn't flinch, his eyes burning with grim solemnity as the remaining eighteen endured the agonizing forge.

As the Calamity Forge flames subsided, the divergence of their spirits took hold.

For five of the captains, unyielding, stubborn willpower anchored their souls. Through the searing heat of the transformation, their minds held firm. Their memories, childhood names, and human identities remained intact. They emerged from the fire with full consciousness, forged into the elite, living captains of the Order.

For the remaining thirteen, the price was exacted in full.

The sheer trauma of the surgery burned away their pasts. Their memories, their childhoods, their loved ones, and every mortal emotion disintegrated under the heat of the forge. Their eyes lost all warmth, settling into cold, unblinking crimson flames behind their visors. What remained was pure, distilled knight instinct, a relentless, emotionless combat matrix wired for absolute slaughter and unshakeable loyalty.

Caius severed the suspension threads. The eighteen surviving warriors dropped smoothly onto the obsidian floor.

For the thirteen memory-less vanguards, their dark plate armor shifted and locked into place with heavy, metallic clicks. Massive Obsidian Tower Shields materialized in their left hands, and heavy war maces hovered in their right. Their closed helms were welded shut forever, faceless, silent juggernauts clad in impenetrable black obsidian plate. Through their Voidfang pathways, these thirteen Shadow Knights could swallow incoming physical force, storing it within their armor to release through devastating Kinetic Redirections or ground-shattering Kinetic Shockwaves.

Caius approached Grand Commander Teryn, holding out a heavy, jet-black spatial ring etched with intricate silver array lines.

"They have forgotten who they were," Caius spoke softly, looking at the thirteen unmoving juggernauts standing in statue-like formation. "They no longer belong to the mortal world. They exist only as an immovable wall before your command."

Caius channeled a thread of dark mana, hardwiring the ring directly to Teryn’s crown point.

The thirteen Shadow Knights turned in absolute lockstep, bowing silently toward Teryn. In a brilliant flash of violet light, all thirteen heavy constructs dissolved into spatial particles, drawn seamlessly into the pocket domain inside Teryn’s ring. From this moment on, Teryn possessed an instantaneous, deployable vanguard wall ready to step out from the void whenever battle called.

On the obsidian floor, the five living captains dropped heavily onto one knee beside Teryn, slamming their gauntleted fists over their hearts.

"We live to serve the Sovereign!" the five captains swore in unison, their clear, conscious voices ringing through the subterranean vault.

Teryn bowed his head beside them, his cherub-sized obsidian blade-wings fanning out behind his shoulders in a sharp, crisp salute.

"The Order is forged, My Lord," Teryn declared.
