CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 208: LAW OF THE ABYSS

A rift in space tore open with a sharp, static crack, spilling purple sparks into the oppressive fog of the Misty Valley. Caius stepped through, his boots making silent contact with the slick basalt stone. The spatial tear snapped shut behind him, sealing the boundary to the upper realms.

He wore his light obsidian armor, the dark plates fitted closely to his frame to maximize speed while absorbing the ambient abyssal mana. At his waist rested his twin short swords, forged from the lightning-infused fangs of a Sabre-Tiger, their hilts cold against his gauntleted hands.

Caius stood amidst the ancient ruins, his eyes scanning the looming cliffside. The air was heavy, damp, and thick with gray mist, exactly as he remembered it. Yet something was missing. The ethereal, resonant voice that had once whispered through the cavernous depths, urging him to return, was completely silent. There was no call, no pressure, only the dead quiet of an abandoned domain.

Instead of pursuing phantom answers in the dark, he retreated beneath the shadow of a half-collapsed stone archway. He set camp in the hollowed ruins, sitting cross-legged as his dual cores circulated in rhythm. His pure Black Core gathered the raw, heavy energy of the valley while his Crown Core kept a vigilant, silent watch over the surrounding space. He rested through the abyssal night, allowing his mind sea to remain still.

When dawn arrived, bringing a faint, bruised-violet light through the mist, Caius opened his eyes. Purple light flared within his gaze as the Eye of the Loom activated. His perception expanded, casting invisible spatial threads across a broad radius, reading the residual mana embedded in the stone and soil.

It did not take long. Near the base of the eastern basalt cliff, his threads caught a familiar disturbance: heavy, four-clawed gouges sunken deep into the rock, accompanied by thin, surgical slits where a double-edged tail-blade had scraped the floor.

The four-eyed stalker. The creature that had once forced him and Sereth to fight for their lives was hunting in these ruins once more. Caius rested his hands on the twin hilts of his short swords, a cold, sovereign smile touching his lips. He was no longer the inexperienced boy hiding behind a stone wall. He had returned to turn his former nightmare into his newest vanguard puppet.

Caius followed the trail through the damp basalt ruins, silent as a ghost. Through the Eye of the Loom, the target soon lay clear in his vision: the four-eyed stalker crouched beside a broken stone pillar, its dark hide blending seamlessly into the shadows. Its upper eyes flickered as they scanned the mist, unaware that Caius had already mapped its internal mana circulation.

He raised his right hand, fingers twitching as black mana threads woven with spatial force coiled through the air. He was seconds away from pinning the creature’s limbs and tearing its core free.

A sudden, suffocating pressure shattered the silence.

The ambient mana in the valley warped violently. Before Caius could release his spatial threads, a massive shadow plunged from the high cliff face above. The air whistled as a giant shape crashed directly onto the smaller stalker, shattering the basalt floor in an explosion of dust and crushed stone.

Caius halted his strike, eyes narrowing behind the mist.

It was another stalker of the exact same breed, but nearly twice the size. Its mane of metallic quills bristled like broadswords, and its four upper eyes burned with a feral, ravenous glare.

Without a moment of hesitation, the larger beast attacked its own kind.

The smaller stalker fought back with desperate, ruthless ferocity. Its quill mane expanded violently, firing a volley of razor-sharp metallic darts into the behemoth's shoulder. It twisted its body in midair, whipping its double-edged tail blade in a lightning-fast arc that left a deep, poisoned slash across the giant’s ribs. Dark blood sprayed across the ruins as the smaller creature used its agile speed to slip beneath the giant's claws, driving its tail toward the alpha's throat.

The massive beast paid no mind to the poison or the quills buried in its hide. Reinforcing its body with a sudden surge of dense, dark mana, it took the tail blow against its armored shoulder and snapped its massive claws downward.

The smaller beast was slammed into the stone, its ribs fracturing under the sheer weight. Before it could recoil or launch another volley of quills, the giant beast lunged forward. Its cavernous jaws opened, lined with jagged teeth, and bit down directly into the smaller creature's neck.

Bone crunched. The smaller stalker thrashed violently, its tail whipping uselessly against the stone floor, but the giant twisted its head with brutal force and tore the throat completely apart.

Dark blood poured over the basalt ruins as the smaller beast went limp, its four eyes dimming into lifelessness.

Caius watched from the shadow of the archway, his Eye of the Loom capturing every detail. There was no pack hierarchy or unity among these predators. In the depths of the valley, they devoured their own kind to absorb their cores and grow stronger.

The victorious behemoth lowered its head to feed, but paused. Its snout twitched. Slowly, its massive head rotated, and its four glowing eyes locked squarely onto the shadow where Caius stood, sensing the faint leak of spatial energy in the air.

The giant beast flared its mane, letting out a low, gut-wrenching growl that vibrated through the stone floor.

A cold smile touched Caius's lips. He unclasped his twin Sabre-Tiger short swords, compressed purple lightning instantly wrapping around the white-bone blades. The Crown Core within his chest pulsed with absolute intent, expanding his spatial threads across the entire clearing.

The behemoth launched itself off the carcass, heavy claws tearing through the air as it surged toward him.

Caius made his move.
