CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 207: THE SOVEREIGN'S VAULTS
The air inside Castle Precipice’s subterranean Magic Hall thrummed with a heavy, rhythmic vibration. Deep purple lightning and ink-black shadow runes illuminated the cavernous vault, where a dozen elite warrior shadow mages of House Vel'drin worked alongside the central fortress arcanists. Etched obsidian anvils and floating spatial matrices hovered in mid-air, bathed in the concentrated ambient mana of the castle's subterranean ley-lines.
Caius stepped through the threshold, his dark mantle rustling as his violet-gold gaze swept across the workshop. The dark elf mages bowed their heads with quiet, instinctual reverence before returning to their delicate spell-crafting.
At the central forge, Elder Orven stood holding a pair of delicate mithril tweezers, meticulously threading microscopic shadow-spatial runes onto a gleaming obsidian band. Hearing Caius’s footsteps, he paused, setting the tools down on the velvet-lined tray before offering a crisp, respectful bow.
"Sovereign," Orven greeted, his low voice carrying the quiet composure of a veteran spell-craftsman. "The integration of our clan's shadow-weaving techniques with the castle’s spatial arrays proceeds beyond expectations."
"I am pleased to hear it, Elder Orven," Caius replied, stopping before the workbench. His eyes locked onto the small tray containing several finished obsidian bands. "Tell me of the prototype rings."
Orven picked up one of the completed rings, holding it up so the ambient torchlight caught the subtle, dark-violet runes etched into its inner band.
"The design required an entirely new architectural foundation," Orven explained, his eyes glinting with professional pride. "Standard spatial storage rings compress non-living matter into a static vacuum. However, as per your specifications, these prototype rings function on a dual-layered matrix. First, they house an expanded pocket dimension specifically stabilized for high-tiered puppet storage."

Orven channeled a thin pulse of mana into the band. A soft, humming aura of dark spatial light enveloped the ring.
"The second layer is the true breakthrough," Orven continued. "We have incorporated a passive ambient absorption array directly into the ring's outer crest. While stored inside the pocket dimension, a high-tiered puppet does not remain dormant in dead space. Instead, the ring acts as a continuous conduit, drawing in the surrounding atmospheric mana like a vessel absorbing water. It continuously recharges the puppet's core, ensuring that whenever you deploy them into battle, their energy reserves are at absolute peak capacity."
Caius reached out, taking the ring between his gloved fingers. He sent a thread of his Eye of the Loom through the band, analyzing the intricate flow of the absorption pathways.
These rings were essential for his current force of six high-tier constructs. Caius mentally took inventory of his vanguard, the chieftains Krag'gath, Borgath, and Gor'muka, the giant king Thrum, the necromancer Mal'kor, and the disgraced High Lord Lorien. He treated their filthy essence beads purely as mechanical puppet fuel, locking each strictly inside its construct's chest cavity, entirely separate from his sacred Crown Core sockets.
"Exquisite work," Caius murmured, his violet-gold pupils glowing. "How many are ready?"
"Six are completely stabilized, Sovereign," Orven replied, gesturing to the tray. "The remaining four are undergoing final matrix alignment as we speak."
"Ensure all ten are finished by nightfall," Caius commanded softly, setting the ring back down.
Six of the obsidian bands would immediately bind his current guardians, leaving four empty vaults awaiting their constructs. A cold, predatory glint flickered within Caius's liquid obsidian eyes as his mantle settled around his shoulders.
"I will venture into the Abyss to claim new beasts for the remaining rings," Caius said, his voice dropping to an icy whisper.
