CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 197: THE SOVEREIGN’S PRECIPICE

  • Next Chapter

On the morning of his twenty-third birthday, Caius Macrae stood upon the northern battlements. Here, his father, Lord Cullum Macrae, had once watched over the modest mountain borders of their house.

The original fortress had stood upon a rocky rise. It was enclosed by thick stone walls and four square towers at its corners, featuring a heavy gatehouse guarding the main entrance and narrow battlements running along the stone.

Caius preserved the core of this historic structure. He strengthened its foundations, reinforced its walls, and rebuilt its weakened sections with meticulous care.

The old stone was gradually replaced and faced with black granite. This transformation gave the fortress a much darker and more imposing appearance.

Within the fortified walls stood the central keep. It was surrounded by an open courtyard, expanded barracks, armories, stables, and essential operational facilities.

Beneath it, the existing foundations were expanded. New chambers were carved deep into the living rock, creating an extensive underground complex beneath the fortress.

What had once been a modest frontier stronghold had now become the hardened heart of a new settlement. Caius retained its historic title as Castle Precipice while consecrating the newly expanded central keep as Cullum's Bastion.

Using dark-spatial arrays and mountain-shaping earth magic, Caius laid out the blueprint for a sweeping, multi-tiered fortress city built directly atop and around the ancient ancestral castle. Legions of scuttling Arachne drones executed the heavy labor, building the fortress stone by stone under the watchful eye of an Arachne humanoid weaver-craftsmith. The master craftsmith followed every detail of Caius's design with absolute, meticulous care for his lord.

Its castle and fortified grounds encompassed approximately 8,000 square meters, while the outer land and settlement expanded across roughly 50,000 square meters, bringing the total holding to a comprehensive 58,000 square meters. Its strategic orientation was absolute.

To the south, the rear of the fortress was backed entirely by the impassable depth of the Great Abyss. This completely eliminated any possibility of a rear siege.

To the east and west, towering natural mountain ridges enclosed the flanks. These ridges forced all physical access through narrow, heavily guarded choke-point passes.

To the north, the front overlooked the six sprawling Obsidian Cities and the lush, mana-soaked agricultural sanctuary of Aethelgard.

Along the original boundaries of the Macrae land holdings, a dense thread-lattice network lay buried deep within the earth. It continuously tapped into localized ley lines to reinforce the heavy runic gates guarding the capital.

Around the edges of the territory stood twelve-foot pedestals of black granite. Each pedestal marked a boundary node, their massive forms rising above the mist, carved with deep runes.

Together, the nodes formed an invisible barrier around the entire property. Crossing between them was forbidden, and anyone approaching the boundary could feel an unseen force pressing against their skin, warning them not to proceed.

Inside the boundary lay a dense black forest. The trees were not ancient, having grown rapidly, nourished by the dense mana that saturated the land. Their trunks were dark, their branches twisted high overhead, and their thick canopy blocked much of the light.

Mist drifted constantly between the trees, concealing the ground and softening the edges of the forest. This vapor was directly inspired by the legendary misty valleys of the southern abyss.

Most striking of all, this rolling fog bled seamlessly from the fathomless depths of the Abyss directly behind the castle. The mist of the fortress and the fog of the Abyss intertwined as though driven by a single, living breath, shrouding the entire domain in perpetual twilight.

From the outside, the territory seemed to vanish entirely into the forest and mist. Only the towering black granite pedestals remained visible along its borders, guarding a phantom stronghold hidden entirely from the world.
