CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 183: REPAIRING THE ORC PUPPETS
Turned away from the fabrication table, Caius walked toward the rear chambers of the workshop, where three colossal, mangled forms lay stretched out across heavy stone repair slabs.
These were the fallen Orc Puppets, the massive constructs forged in the likeness of Warlord Krag'gath and the fallen chieftains, who had been brutally torn apart by the Solar Angels' plasma greatswords during the climax of the battle. Their limbs were severed, their artificial obsidian-and-lightning sinew burned to ash, and their chest cavities shattered.
Caius paused his hand over the shattered chest cavity of the central construct, his dark violet eyes narrowing in cold calculation. The battlefield outside was littered with the fresh corpses of other slain orc chieftains and powerful warriors. He easily could have harvested those untouched carcasses to forge brand-new puppet frames from scratch. Yet, he deliberately chose to salvage and rebuild these specific remnants. Krag'gath and his circle had reached Warlord level entirely on their own strength before their demise. More importantly, Krag'gath carried a very specific, bitter history. The memory of that towering brute slaughtering Caius's father still lingered like a sharp, unhealed scar. Now, that same warlord stood reduced to a blindfolded, mindless toy bound entirely to his killer's will. There was a poetic, ruthless justice in forcing the murderer to serve as an eternal, unyielding shield.
To an ordinary army, these constructs were destroyed beyond recovery. But to Caius, who refused to waste a single socket of his Crown Core on crude essences, they were merely physical vessels built of woven shadow, kinetic lightning, and bound puppet beads. Better yet, they were prime templates for an upgraded synthesis utilizing the abundant spoils of the recent slaughter.
"They were tools when I built them," Caius said coldly, stepping up to the broken torsos. "Tools do not die until I break them completely. And now, they will be rebuilt stronger."
At a wave of his hand, Arachne carriers dragged heavy carts filled with fresh salvage from the battlefield. Reusable body parts of fallen orc berserkers, including dense muscle fibers, thick arm bones, and hardened skin sheets, were piled beside the repair slabs to serve as biological reinforcements for the damaged frames.
Caius raised his right hand, summoning his primary mana source, the Black Core.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
The dense, absolute darkness of his core surged outward, manifesting a roiling aura of Black Flame across his fingertips. Invoking the Calamity Forge, Caius swept his hand over a lead-lined chest containing twelve harvested orc mana cores collected from the battlefield. The Black Flame did not function as ordinary fire. Instead, it acted as a brutal refining catalyst, burning away the crude blood-rage, volatile instincts, and impurities embedded within the foreign orc energy nodes.
The twelve crude mana cores bucked against the dark purification, but the Black Flame relentlessly stripped away their chaotic properties until only raw, neutral energy remained. Compressing the molten mass with his sovereign will, Caius fused the twelve purified fragments down into a single, hyper-dense composite core contained entirely within an obsidian shell.
With surgical precision, Caius made an incision in the lower abdomen of the first repaired Orc Puppet, planting the composite core directly into the dantian region. The dead flesh convulsed as the massive, multi-sourced energy engine flooded the construct's pathways, pumping raw, unnatural kinetic power through the reinforced muscle fibers.
Next came the upper control node. At the crown point of the skull, Caius carved a clean socket into the bone, inserting a specialized Crown Core derivation forged from spatial bindings and his own mental imprint. While the dantian engine provided the raw kinetic power, the Crown Core established intent, authority, and direction, locking the puppet into absolute obedience.
With the core architecture established, Caius summoned the Black River. Thick strands of liquid obsidian mana poured from his fingertips, arc-welding the reusable orc body parts and severed limbs back onto the massive frames. Shadow threads re-wove the torn muscle, bone, and iron-hard sinew, seamlessly integrating the battlefield salvage into the nine-foot towering dimensions of the Orc constructs. The heavy iron armor plates were reinforced with fresh layers of black Arachne chitin, sealing the massive structural wounds in minutes.
Caius repeated the meticulous process for all three constructs, utilizing twelve harvested orc mana cores and refined body parts for each vessel.
When he finished, the three colossal Orc Puppets sat upright simultaneously with a series of heavy, bone-crunching clicks.
Their pitch-black fabric blindfolds, the mark of their absolute disgrace and total servitude, remained bound tightly over their eyes. They raised their gargantuan shadowy waraxes, lowering their heads in complete, silent obedience before their creator.
Standing side-by-side in the subterranean vault, the three blindfolded Orc Puppet leviathans and the black-armored High Elf puppet wearing his fake, glittering iron crown formed a grotesque, perfectly optimized vanguard ready for the next campaign.
