CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 179: THE HARVEST OF THE FALLEN

  • Next Chapter

The central steppe had fallen entirely silent, save for the dry whistle of the mountain wind pushing gray ash across the glassed crater.

King Alden did not stay to witness the death of the High Lord, nor did he wait for the black tide to claim his royal guard. The moment the four divine Solar Angels collapsed and the terrifying Shadow Knight stepped onto the field, the human king abandoned his heavy golden mantle, broke through his own overextended rear lines, and fled west with every surviving soldier who could still run.

Over ten thousand human infantry and a pathetic handful of terrified, riderless High Elven officers scattered across the steppe. They ran without formations, banners, or honor. Driven by absolute, primal terror, they fled as the Orc Warg Riders hunted them continuously for twenty miles, driving them like cattle until the shattered remnants finally crossed the western border of the steppe, leaving their dead behind in the dirt.

Back on the battlefield, the true aftermath of the slaughter began.

RUMBLE...

The earth fractured along the central valley floor once more, but this time, no lethal blade-arms erupted from the dark. Instead, thousands of hand-sized, light-chitin Arachne worker drones scuttled out from the cavernous subterranean sinkholes, moving across the blood-soaked terrain in eerie, mechanical synchronization.

Leading the subterranean harvest was the lone male Arachne artisan, the weaversmith.

Holding his fine metal chisels and shaping hammers rather than blades, the artisan directed the worker drones with quiet, absolute efficiency. Thousands of tiny Arachne scurried over fallen human and elven soldiers, cleanly unbuckling breastplates, stripping enchanted mithril greaves, and gathering weapons into massive, organized piles. The molted chitin armor of the fallen warriors was carefully cataloged, while steel, iron, and high-grade elven alloy were sorted onto wooden sleds to be hauled straight down into the subterranean fabrication chambers.

Simultaneously, specialized extraction squads moved systematically through the carnage. With sharp, obsidian scalpels, the dark elf shadowblades and Arachne harvesters sliced open the chests of fallen high elven mages, elite knights, and orc berserkers, carefully extracting their glowing internal mana cores before the residual energy could dissipate into the air. Hundreds of cores, ranging from the pale golden light of elven spellcasters to the crude crimson energy nodes of the orc elite, were collected in thick, lead-lined containment chests.

By direct decree of the Sovereign, exactly sixty percent of the harvested mana cores were immediately channeled upward through specialized umbral conduits directly to the high terraces of the citadel, feeding a steady stream of refined energy straight into Caius's internal pathways to fortify his expanding core nodes. The remaining forty percent were delivered deep into the subterranean hatchery vaults, handed over to the Arachne brood-mothers to nourish the queen and accelerate the growth of the next generation of chitinous warriors.

Behind the core harvesters came a second, larger wave of Arachne broods pouring directly out from the main hatchery chambers below. These heavy-bodied carriers moved methodically, wrapping the thousands of fallen human and high elven corpses in clean, white silk webbing before hoisting the heavy cocoons onto their backs. In an organized, endless parade of shadow and silk, the bodies were carried down into the deep subterranean chambers to be processed as raw biomass and dark energy.

Nothing was wasted. The battlefield was being picked clean down to the stone.

At the center of the clearing, Old Bones stood beside a towering wooden table set up near the broken command wagon.

Dozens of dark elf shadowblades dropped velvet sacks, heavy leather purses, and enchanted spatial storage bags onto the table. Old Bones's scarred hands worked methodically, tipping out piles of glittering high elven gold coins, refined mana crystals, royal seals, and enchanted spatial rings recovered from the dead officers.

"Keep the spatial bags separate!" Old Bones rasped, his voice cutting through the dry clicking of the worker drones. "Every ring, bag, and token goes to the primary vault. Unseal the spatial locks and catalog every mana crystal, ration, and scroll. This is the foundation of our Sovereign's war chest for the campaigns ahead."

A dark elf lieutenant nodded, sweeping a massive pile of golden Solarian coins into a reinforced iron chest. "The High Elves brought enough wealth to fund an empire’s campaign, my Lord."

"And now it funds ours," Old Bones sneered, his cold eyes gleaming as he watched the thousands of spider drones carry the wealth of Mount Eldoria into the depths of the fortress.

High on the battlements of the Black Granite Citadel, Caius stood in silence, his mantle fluttering in the wind. In his right hand, he held the brilliant amber-gold essence bead ripped from High Lord Lorien's crown chakra, feeling its concentrated, radiant power pulse against his palm while streams of raw harvested core energy continuously fed his pathways. Below him, his fortress processed the spoils of victory with terrifying, seamless perfection, preparing for the day the true Solarian Empire would march to claim their dead.
