CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 175: THE EARTH CLEAVES OPEN
High Lord Lorien stood at the center of his collapsing command square, his golden cape stained with ash and sweat. Around him, the remnants of his proud high elven cohort, once ten thousand strong and now reduced to a frantic, disorganized clump, retreated in absolute panic.
To the south, King Alden’s eighty thousand human infantry were being systematically ground into dust between the wall of thirty thousand berserkers and the crushing flanks of the thirteen thousand heavy Orc Legions. To the north, the high plateau burned in ruined splinters, overrun by the two thousand shadow-clad killers of the Quick Reaction Legion.
"Form a defensive circle! Hold the high ground!" Lorien screamed, his voice cracking with uncharacteristic hysteria. He gripped his royal golden broadsword, his knuckles white. "Sun-Gilded Sentinels, raise your shields! We cut our way back toward the eastern pass!"
The surviving four hundred and fifty Sun-Gilded Sentinels scrambled into position, locking their radiant mithril shields to form a glowing golden dome over the panicked elven high command. They prepared to brace against a charge from the surface.
They never expected the attack to come from beneath their feet.
RUMBLE...
A deep, violent tremor shook the basalt bedrock beneath the encampment. The ground did not merely shake, it heaved upward.
SHATTER!
The earth fractured with deafening cracks. Dozens of massive subterranean sinkholes tore open directly inside the golden shield-wall. Dirt, shattered granite, and screaming high elven soldiers fell into the abyss as the hollow bedrock gave way entirely.
"EARTHQUAKE! THE GROUND IS GIVING WAY!"
Before the sentinel could finish his cry, a streak of jet-black chitin erupted from the cavernous pit beneath him.
SWISH-CRACK!
A five-foot-long razor-sharp blade-arm impaled the sentinel through his chest plate, lifting his heavy, armored body ten feet into the air before flinging him aside like a ragdoll.
Out of the dark abyss poured the subterranean nightmare of the Obsidian Citadel: the six hundred and fifty humanoid Arachne elites.

They were horrifyingly majestic. Standing erect on two powerful legs covered in gleaming obsidian chitin armor, their upper marble-white torsos stood six feet tall, featuring cold, black eyes and sharp mandibles clicking in rhythmic synchronization. Each warrior wielded twin shadow-steel curved daggers in their hands, while four lethal, scythe-like blade-arms extended from their backs, flexing with blinding, terrifying precision.
Behind them, the gaping subterranean tunnels hissed as four thousand three hundred and fifty younger spider-form broods swarmed the edges of the pits, sealing off every possible escape route with cascades of sticky, fire-proof shadow-silk.
"What in the name of the Sun-God are these things?" an elven noble shrieked, backing away as a humanoid Arachne dropped silently onto the dirt before him.
The six hundred and fifty elites did not roar or chant. They fought with terrifying, mechanical coordination.
SWISH! CLANG! CUT!
They moved like a storm of scythes. A single humanoid Arachne engaged four Sun-Gilded Sentinels at once, its twin hand-blades parrying heavy broadswords while its four back-arms lashed out like striking vipers, puncturing neck seams, eye slits, and joint armor with effortless lethal precision.
Their obsidian chitin carapaces completely ignored the residual solar magic radiating from the elves' weapons. When a high elven spellcaster tried to unleash a bright solar burst, a humanoid Arachne blurred forward using its six limbs to scale the terrain, decapitating the mage before the chant could cross his lips.
The high elven retreat turned into an absolute, bloody slaughterhouse. Packed tightly inside their own broken lines, trapped between the gaping subterranean chasms and the endless swarm of chitin and shadow-silk, the pride of Mount Eldoria was butchered where they stood.
High Lord Lorien stumbled back, his war-charger having been pulled into a tunnel pit by a dozen shadow-silk strands. He looked around in utter horror as his elite personal guard, the absolute pinnacle of high elven martial prowess, was systematically dismantled in less than five minutes.
"No... no! I am a High Lord of Eldoria!" Lorien raged, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling violently.
He raised his golden sword, desperately trying to force his internal mana to swell once more to unleash his final domain spell.
Thump.
A violent, sickening spasm tore through his chest. The calcified dead energy inside his meridians, the lingering curse of his secret practice with the Moon Flame Art, reacted to the ambient shadow magic filling the air. His pathways locked completely. His solar core stalled with an agonizing, tearing crunch.
Lorien spat a mouthful of dark, stagnant blood, dropping to his knees on the dirt.
Panicked, desperate, and watching the black tide of chitin close in, Lorien lifted his bloodshot eyes toward the twelve surviving High Elven Archmages huddled behind his broken command wagon.
"High Mages!" Lorien shrieked, his voice breaking into a ragged, maniacal scream as he wiped the dark bile from his lips. "Break your cores! Burn your life essence! Open the High Vaults of Mount Eldoria and summon the Solar Angels!"
