Chapter 103: Her Mate
Chapter 103: Her Mate
Kaden’s POV
"Nobody in her pack knew about the relationship," Logan explained quickly, sensing the dark aura radiating off me. "They were extremely careful. They usually met in deeply hidden places in the woods."
I frowned, my chest tightening. "Did the informant find out why their relationship had to be a secret?"
Logan nodded. "A maid who works inside the Blood Moon mansion says the boy Rebecca was seeing is their Beta’s son. The soon-to-be Beta of her home pack."
My eyes narrowed into a hardened glare. She dated him. The future Beta. He was her secret lover.
And yet, when Rebecca was dragged out into the pack square, when she was publicly humiliated and stoned by her own people for what happened to Helen... that coward was there. He stood in the crowd and did absolutely nothing to protect her. Foolish, weak man. He didn’t deserve a woman like her. I didn’t care what Rebecca had done—even if she had committed the worst crimes, if she belonged to me, I would never stand by and let a crowd throw stones at her. I would have torn the pack apart first.
But Logan wasn’t finished. He took a nervous breath and dropped an even bigger bombshell.
"The maid also mentioned a conversation she accidentally overheard. She heard Rebecca explicitly calling the Beta’s son her mate."
My anger spiked to an absolute breaking point. A low, beastly growl tore from the back of my throat, vibrating so loudly the glass windows near the entrance rattled. Her mate? She had found her true, fated mate, and it was a coward from her own pack? But wait, if he is her mate, then Kane’s claim? Was that a lie? I knew it.
"But Alpha King, there is something very confusing about this," Logan added quickly, trying to calm my roaring wolf. "Just last week, that same Beta’s son held a pack ceremony. He officially announced to the entire pack that Monica... Rebecca’s half-sister... is his fated mate."
"Something is not adding up," I said, my voice dropping into a suspicious, low whisper. I turned to look directly at Logan. "Tell our men to dig deeper into this. And tell Alpha Kelvin again—he must provide that video recording before tomorrow night. I do not care how he does it. If it is not on my desk, there will be blood."
"Yes, Alpha King," Logan said, bowing quickly.
I walked away, leaving him in the dark hallway. When I reached my bedroom, the heavy silence of the room welcomed me. I took off my shirt and threw it on the chair, my mind spinning with a million thoughts.
Rebecca had a mate. And that bastard couldn’t even protect her. Even though the crime she was blamed for was very grave, I would never abandon my woman. Even if she was completely wrong, a real man stands by his female.
I closed my eyes and imagined my late mate, Helen, in a situation like that. If a crowd tried to stone her to death, I would die fighting before I let a single rock touch her skin. So how could a fated mate just stand there, stay quiet, and not say a single word to help his own woman?
"Rebecca... what kind of life did you live?" I spoke out loud to the empty room, my chest tightening with an emotion I didn’t want to admit.
As for Kane, it was obvious now that he was lying about his claim. I knew it. But I paused, a sudden wave of confusion hitting me. The only way Kane could claim Rebecca now is if Rebecca is no longer that boy’s mate. Are they second-chance mates?
I shook my head, trying to clear the confusion. I decided to go down to her room and check up on her true body. I wanted to see her, and more than that, I wanted to scare her soul a little more so she would feel forced to wake up and return to her real flesh.
I left my room and walked down the quiet corridors. But when I reached the room, I stopped dead in my tracks. My brow furrowed in deep anger. The guards who were supposed to be guarding the door were completely gone.
I frowned deeply and pushed the door open. I walked into the room, but the only person there was Rebecca’s pale, lifeless body hooked up to the blinking machines. Stephanie—or rather, Rebecca inside Stephanie’s body—was nowhere to be found.
I walked out of the room, my temper rising. "Guards!" I yelled.
Two guards came running down the hall, their faces pale with fear. They bowed quickly, trembling before me. "Alpha King!"
"Why isn’t this room protected?" I growled, my green eyes flashing.
They started stammering, giving silly excuses about taking a quick break and switching shifts. I didn’t want to hear it. I cut them off and immediately opened a mind-link to the head maid.
’Find Stephanie right now and send her up to my bedroom,’ I ordered coldly, ending the mind-link before she could even reply.
I walked back to my chambers, my blood boiling. To cool my wolf down, I went into the bathroom and took a long, freezing cold bath. Once I was done, I got dressed in simple, loose sweatpants and walked back into my main bedroom area. I sat down, waiting for Rebecca to knock on my door.
Instead of a gentle knock, a loud, panicked bang echoed against the wooden door.
"Come in," I commanded.
The heavy doors swung open, and the head maid and the head guard stepped inside. Both of them looked absolutely terrified, their skin pale and their hands shaking. The moment I saw their faces, I knew instantly that something was terribly wrong.
My heart did a strange, sudden flip in my chest. "Where is Rebecca?" I demanded, my voice sharp.
The head maid looked confused, her eyes darting around the floor. "Alpha King... your breeder is downstairs in the medical room. She is still lying in her bed, completely asleep."
I frowned, my anger flaring up. I didn’t mean Rebecca’s body. I meant Stephanie.
Before I could speak another word or yell at them for being stupid, the head guard took a nervous step forward. He swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he dropped the ultimate bombshell.
"Alpha... but Stephanie is missing," the head guard gasped out. "We have searched every single corner of this mansion, from the attic to the kitchens, but we cannot find her anywhere. She is gone."
