Chapter 63: 63-Need her

The conversation with Luan had left Maisa with only one thought, she needed Varitreya.

Her need was not because she wanted to see the princess or wanted another confrontation, and certainly not because she wanted to admit how much the bond had begun to frighten her. She simply could not endure another hour of the nightmare.

Every few minutes, her stomach twisted violently. The pain would begin as a dull pressure beneath her ribs before spreading through her entire body, crawling along her veins until she could barely stand and then came the nausea.

She would stumble somewhere secluded, bend over, and vomit things that should never have been inside a vampire’s body in the first place; soil, dry sand, tiny roots, fragments of leaves and dark pieces of earth that seemed to come from somewhere deep beneath the world itself.

And every time it happened, the flower-shaped bond above her heart burned. The two petals, white and black had already faded.

Luan’s explanation had made too much sense. The bond was reacting to them and she wasn’t a freak of nature as they redblood, what made her a freak was the bond.

The zing was desperate to pull them back toward Maisa, desperate to stop the distance growing between them, and because Maisa herself couldn’t force them to accept what neither wanted, the bond had found another way to make its demands known.

Through pain, earth, fire and her own body. So Maisa had made her decision: she was going to Varitreya and get her to end her suffering.

The VIP section of the hotel occupied the highest floor, separated from the ordinary student accommodations by several layers of security.

The corridors were quieter there, the carpets thicker, the walls decorated with ancient paintings of royal vampires whose eyes seemed to follow anyone who passed beneath them.

Two rooms had been reserved for the princess and Kayden, with a spacious lounge connecting them.

Normally, no student would have been permitted anywhere near the floor but Maisa had been beside the princess before and the secret guards recognized her scent.

More importantly, they had never received an order from the princess declaring her a threat. So when she approached, they exchanged a glance and remained hidden, the ones at the door simply stepped aside.

Maisa lowered her eyes and walked past. Her hands trembled out of nervousness of what she was about to do. She didn’t know what she was going to say or whether Varitreya would listen or not.

She only knew that she couldn’t keep vomiting pieces of the earth while the person responsible for one half of her agony sat somewhere nearby pretending she didn’t exist.

The lounge doors were slightly open when she got there. Warm amber light spilled across the hallway and gave the whole place a comfortable vibe.

Maisa pushed the door open. She didn’t knock, as that opened room to either be allowed on or refuses and she couldn’t afford the latter.

Inside, everything looked almost painfully peaceful. Varitreya sat elegantly on one end of the long velvet sofa, one leg crossed over the other, a chilled glass of black blood resting between her fingers.

Kayden occupied the opposite side, looking far more relaxed than anyone had a right to look after everything that had happened at the academy. Several bottles of chilled black and blue blood sat on the low table between them, their dark contents catching the light.

They were laughing happily. Enjoying each other’s company with sift talk and laughter than sounded so peaceful that Maisa was envious.

Maisa stopped in the doorway. She hadn’t realized how different Varitreya looked when she wasn’t carrying the weight of being the future queen.

Her shoulders were relaxed, her white eyes were warm. There was a softness to her expression Maisa had only glimpsed a handful of times.

Kayden was telling her something about their childhood, and Varitreya laughed under her breath before shaking her head.

For one strange moment, Maisa felt like an intruder. But before she turnes to leave and not disturb them, she felt her stomach twist again.

Her hand immediately flew to her mouth. She swallowed hard, she couldn’t vomit there. Even though swallowed hurt far worse than betting it out, she gritted her teeth and endured. ’Please, not here,’ she pleaded.

Kayden noticed her first arrive. His expression immediately soured when he saw her. The warmth vanished from his face. "Get out, redblood."

The words struck Maisa harder than expected. The way that Kayden effortlessly fit in with the princess and could command the vampires around her without fear was enviable.

She slowly lifted her head. Her eyes burning with more anger. She didn’t ask for the bond that kept pushing her towards Varitreya and the others, without it, she would be living a normal vampire life and never worry about being pushed into uncomfortable situations.

Kayden stared at her with undisguised irritation. "I said get out."

Maisa’s fingers curled. Another wave of nausea rolled through her. She knew she didn’t have much time.

"No, I won’t."

Kayden’s eyebrows rose, his face settled into the expression of shock. No blood, not even the royal family had ever been that rude to him.

Varitreya slowly lowered her glass. She glanced at Maisa and at her own wrist. She had felt Maisa, more deeply than ever and all flower transmitted was so much pain before it started dulling out.

She had no idea what it meant and she also couldn’t have Maisa say the wrong thing infront of Kayden.

"No?" Kayden repeated.

Maisa swallowed. "I am here for the princess."

"Then speak to her another time," Kayden stated. "Can’t you see we are busy or do you lack ever the most basic of manners?"

"I can’t wait for another time."

Kayden stood. His presence immediately filled the room. He was a whiteblood, and although Varitreya’s power eclipsed his, Kayden still carried the suffocating authority of a vampire born near the very top of their society.

"You don’t get to decide when you speak to her!" Kayden let out.

Maisa’s heart hammered. She didn’t have much time and couldn’t waste that golden opportunity arguing with Kayden.

"I need her."

"But she doesn’t need you," Kayden cut sharply. "Varitreya Vancrest doesn’t need a redblood. You’ll only drag down."

Something inside Maisa snapped. Perhaps it was the pain or maybe her exhaustion or it was the realization that she had spent days being treated as though her existence itself were an inconvenience while she was a living, breathing being just like the higher bloods.

She looked directly at Kayden. "Then you leave."

Silence swallowed the whole room when she asked Kayden to leave the room.

Kayden stared at her with widened eyes and killing intent surfacing. He wanted to rip Maisa’s tongue out and set it ablaze before chopping the girl to pieces and feeding her to stray dogs.

Varitreya stared at her. The corner of her mouth lifted. It was the first time she had met someone brave enough to not only exchange words with Kayden but also dismiss him from a room.

Maisa’s heart pounded so loudly she could hear it. The sight of such a fragile tiny rat baring her teeth at a huge and powerful cat was adorable to watch.

"Excuse me?" Kayden asked. He felt he hadn’t heard her right. There was no way that Maisa asked him of all vampires to leave the room.

"You heard me," Maisa held her stance. "Get out!" She demanded, not backing down.
