Chapter 474: Geopolitics of the Velvet Tundra

The initial, breathtaking novelty of existing inside a three-thousand-square-foot, wall-less, storm-grey crushed velvet basin lasted for exactly forty-two minutes.

Then, the terrifying reality of an entirely borderless society began to set in.

Without the structural interruption of drywall or teakwood partitions, the acoustic dynamics of the ground floor had drastically altered. The estate no longer possessed the hushed, compartmentalized privacy of a traditional mansion. It had become a sprawling, highly padded amphitheater.

From the far eastern edge of the endless textile tundra—somewhere near the ghosts of the former dining hall—a sharp, distinct crunch echoed across the room.

Courteney Cox, who was meticulously attempting to build a geometric fortress out of bolster pillows, flinched. She glared across the vast grey sea. "Who is eating a cracker? The sound waves are literally traveling across the room and bouncing off the foyer entrance. It sounds like someone is stepping on dry leaves inside my ear."

"It is a truffle-dusted potato chip, and I have the right to consume carbohydrates in my designated sovereign territory," Salma Hayek called back defensively. She was lying on her stomach, having successfully rolled nearly twenty feet from the center of the room to establish her own independent republic near the glass patio doors.

"You don’t have a sovereign territory, Salma!" Shakira argued, sitting cross-legged near what used to be the hallway corridor. The pop star threw her hands up, her fiery curls bouncing. "Alex explicitly refused to draw borders! Which means your chewing is violating international airspace! I told you all this was an acoustic nightmare!"

Alex lay perfectly supine in the dead center of the room, operating as the gravitational anchor for the entire bickering ecosystem. He was clad in a faded, exceptionally worn-in vintage band shirt and loose heather-grey cotton trousers. His deep, midnight stare remained lazily fixed on the ceiling fixtures. He was thoroughly enjoying the warmth of Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, who had aggressively claimed the real estate directly against his left and right ribcages, acting as his personal, highly territorial bodyguards.

"Chewing is a mechanical failure of the digestive process," Alex murmured, his deep baritone rolling smoothly across the open floor plan without the need for elevation. "If you must consume solid matter, Salma, I suggest you let the chip dissolve naturally on your tongue. Mastication generates unnecessary friction and pollutes the environment."

"I am not going to suck on a potato chip until it melts, Alexander!" Salma yelled across the velvet plains. "That is disgusting! And I am starving! Since you had Vanguard incinerate the dining table, how are we supposed to eat a civilized meal?"

"Civilization is a construct designed to sell chairs," Alex reasoned flawlessly, not lifting his head. "Chairs force the human spine into a rigid ninety-degree angle, restricting blood flow to the lower extremities. We will dine as the ancient Romans did. Horizontally. When the catering arrives, you may simply drag your portion to your chosen quadrant."

Monica Bellucci, lounging elegantly a few feet away in her pearl-colored satin slip, let out a rich, musical laugh. She propped herself up on one elbow, her dark hair spilling over her bare shoulder.

"You have effectively reduced a house full of A-list celebrities to a pack of highly glamorous, feral cats," Monica noted, her Italian accent dripping with profound amusement. "We are going to be dragging plates of food across a giant mattress and fighting over the scraps."

"I prefer the term ’apex predators functioning at optimal leisure,’" Alex corrected smoothly.

"Well, this apex predator needs to use the restroom," Gillian Anderson announced, sitting up from her spot near the center console. She stretched her arms, looking out over the endless expanse of grey velvet that now separated her from the powder room. She blinked, suddenly realizing the logistical flaw of the new architecture.

"Wait," Gillian muttered, her brow furrowing. "To get to the bathroom, I have to cross Mariah’s vocal-rest zone, navigate through Courteney’s pillow fort, and step over Shakira."

"You are not stepping over me," Shakira warned instantly, pointing a manicured finger at the actress. "I am establishing a strict no-fly zone over my legs. If you want to cross, you have to request a transit visa."

"I am not requesting a visa to use the toilet in my own house!" Gillian shot back, her husky voice laced with disbelief.

"It is a toll road now, Gillian," Mariah Carey chimed in, lying gracefully on her back with a silk sleep mask resting on her forehead. "If you cross my airspace, you owe me a foot massage. The rules of the velvet tundra are absolute."

Jennifer giggled, burying her face into Alex’s shoulder to muffle her laughter. "They are literally establishing trade routes and imposing tariffs. Alex, your anarchy is turning into a feudal system."

"Feudalism implies a lord who collects taxes," Alex replied lazily. "I collect nothing but peace. I am the Switzerland of this mattress. I remain entirely neutral."

"You can’t be neutral when you are the geographic center of the room!" Angelina purred, her lips curling into a wicked smirk. She shifted closer, draping a leg casually over Alex’s shin to solidify her territorial claim. "Everyone has to navigate around us. We are the capital city. If Gillian wants to go to the bathroom, she has to go around the horn."

Gillian let out a long, cynical sigh. She looked at the vast distance she had to cover. Defeated by the sheer absurdity of the environment, she dropped to her knees.

Instead of standing up to walk, she executed a slow, incredibly dignified tactical roll across the velvet, intentionally bypassing Courteney’s pillow fort and slipping right past Shakira’s legs.

The entire room watched in stunned, highly entertained silence as the esteemed, award-winning actress rolled sequentially across the floor until she reached the bathroom threshold, disappearing behind the door.

"She actually did it," Salma gasped from the eastern wing, holding a half-eaten potato chip. "She rolled."

"Of course she rolled," Alex murmured, a faint, deeply satisfied smile touching his lips. "Walking across a heavily cushioned surface requires immense stabilization of the core and ankles. It is a balancing act. Rolling utilizes momentum and gravity. Gillian has accepted the undeniable superiority of the cylinder. She is adapting to the future."

"The future is ridiculous," Courteney complained, though she was currently adjusting a velvet bolster to better support her lower back without having to sit up. "Alex, what happens when we want to watch a movie? The primary projection screen is on the north wall. Salma is basically in another time zone. She won’t be able to see the subtitles."

"That sounds like a localized tragedy for Salma," Alex stated effortlessly. "Perhaps she should not have aggressively migrated to the eastern borders in a desperate bid for independence."

"I migrated because you people are taking up all the oxygen in the center!" Salma yelled back. "And I don’t need subtitles! I speak three languages!"

"Then you can simply listen to the audio broadcast and visualize the cinematography in your mind," Alex reasoned. "Using your imagination burns fewer calories than squinting across seventy feet of upholstery. It is an exercise in mental efficiency."

Monica shook her head, thoroughly delighted by the total collapse of domestic norms. She gracefully slid across the velvet, abandoning her isolated spot to join the cluster in the center. She wedged herself comfortably near Alex’s feet, resting her head against his calf.

"I am claiming political asylum in the capital," Monica announced smoothly. "The outer territories are too volatile. Salma is eating loud carbohydrates, and Courteney is trying to build a wall out of cushions. I prefer the safety of the Prime Meridian."

"Asylum granted," Alex murmured. "Your presence provides excellent thermal insulation for my lower extremities. You are a valued asset to the central state."

Angelina narrowed her eyes at the Italian actress, a flicker of territorial instinct flaring. "The capital is getting crowded, Monica. Keep your elbows to yourself."

"I am a master of diplomacy, Angelina," Monica smiled warmly, closing her eyes. "I take up exactly as much space as I require, and not a millimeter more."

Shakira, watching the consolidation of power in the center of the room, let out a frustrated groan. The isolation of the outer rim was quickly losing its appeal. She abandoned her no-fly zone, crawling across the grey expanse until she bumped directly into Jennifer’s side.

"Move over," Shakira demanded, nudging the blonde actress. "I am cold, and the HVAC vent over there is blowing directly on my neck."

"I am not moving," Jennifer countered seamlessly, refusing to yield a single inch of her proximity to Alex. "You demanded your own territory. Deal with the climate consequences of your secession."

"Alex!" Shakira complained, poking his ribcage. "Tell her to share the thermal heat!"

Alex did not flinch. He did not open his eyes. He simply let out another long, heavy breath.

"I am not a space heater, Shakira," Alex lectured, his tone devoid of any sympathy. "And I am not a diplomat. You requested a borderless society. This is the reality of an open floor plan. You must negotiate your own survival. Now, please cease your physical hostility against my ribcage. Poking is a sharp, localized kinetic assault, and I will not tolerate violence in the capital city."

The pop star huffed, eventually squeezing herself into a narrow gap between Jennifer and Monica, completing the dense, overlapping puzzle of human limbs in the center of the vast room.

The great domestic rebellion had ended not with a bang, but with a highly strategic, incredibly lazy consolidation of body heat.

Alex lay perfectly still, completely surrounded by the most powerful women in the industry. The walls were gone. The furniture was eradicated. The room was a sprawling, infinite mattress, and he had successfully trained his entire household to traverse it by rolling.

He was fully awake, and yet, he had achieved absolute, unyielding victory over the concept of effort. He sank deeper into the plush velvet, entirely content to let his borderless republic govern itself.
