Beneath His Skin
Chapter 161: The Unfolding Truth XLI
Third Person POV
The nursery was filled with a baby’s laughter.
It was a high, bright, and utterly careless sound, the kind of noise that possessed a strange magic, the ability to make every single problem, every dark shadow, and every looming threat in the wide world seem small and completely unimportant.
The sweet giggle bounced off the cold stone walls, resonated against the heavy wooden ceiling beams, and echoed through the space where the grand furniture had been hastily pushed aside.
A thick, soft patchwork blanket lay spread across the center of the scuffed floorboards, creating a small island of safety where the baby sat.
Baby Azura was learning how to sit up all on her own.
Her tiny, chubby legs were spread wide out in front of her for stability, and her little arms were held straight out to the sides like a bird trying to balance on a wire.
Her hair... a thick, unruly mop of black strands that mirrored her father’s, broken only by that little, striking streak of stark white at the very front, stuck up in wild tufts where she had been enthusiastically rubbing her head against the fabric.
For three glorious seconds, she stayed perfectly steady.
Then, her tiny torso gave a dramatic wobble.
She tipped sharply to the left, tumoring sideways and landing directly on the soft blanket with a small, cushioned thump.
She did not shed a single tear. She simply lay flat on her back, looking entirely surprised, her wide, pale grey eyes blinking up at the ceiling.
Kai was already kneeling right in front of her on the floorboards, his large, calloused hands hovering just inches away from her small body, constantly ready to catch her if she fell too hard.
His fierce green eyes, usually so sharp and calculating when dealing with the pack, softened into an expression of pure, unadulterated devotion that he never showed to anyone else.
He had spent the last ten uninterrupted minutes pulling the most ridiculous faces, and his daughter had rewarded every single one of them with a breathless explosion of joy.
Kai brought his large hands up to cover his face, peeking out through the tiny gaps between his fingers.
"Peekaboo."
Azura’s tiny face instantly split into a wide, beautiful grin.
It was entirely toothless, gummy, and absolutely perfect.
Kai chuckled softly, hiding his face entirely behind his palms once more.
"Peekaboo!"
She let out a high, melodic squeal of delight, kicking her chubby legs in the air.
From across the room, the sound hit Helen’s chest with a physical ache, a mixture of profound love and a creeping, heavy dread that made her heart physically hurt.
Helen sat quietly on the very edge of the grand bed, her legs crossed at the ankles, her hands resting completely still in her lap.
She was not participating in the game, but was just watching them.
Her eyes moved over the two of them with a quiet, desperate intensity, manually memorizing the way the orange light hit Kai’s jawline, the exact pitch of Azura’s giggle, and the warmth radiating from the small blanket.
She was storing every single detail away somewhere deep inside her soul, locking it into a hidden vault where she could keep it safe forever, no matter what the future held.
Kai glanced back over his shoulder at her, a brilliant, easy smile stretching across his handsome face.
"She is getting so much stronger, my love. Just yesterday, she could only manage to sit up for a few seconds before she dived. Today, she lasted almost a whole minute before tipping over."
Helen forced her lips to curve upward, her eyes shining with a soft affection.
"She clearly has her father’s stubborn streak."
Kai placed a hand over his chest, pretending to look deeply offended.
"I am not stubborn in the slightest."
Helen raised a single, elegant eyebrow, a small touch of humor breaking through her quiet demeanor.
"You literally abandoned your entire pack and your royal duties just to go wander into a dangerous forest to find yourself."
Kai’s green eyes flashed with a playful grin as he turned back to his daughter.
"That was not stubbornness at all. That was... a highly calculated strategic retreat."
Helen let out a genuine, airy laugh.
Azura, hearing the beautiful sound of her mother’s voice, instantly echoed the laughter, letting out another high-pitched giggle even though she had absolutely no idea what the joke was about.
She just desperately wanted to be a part of the happiness filling the room.
Kai leaned down closer to the blanket, placing his hands over his eyes one more time.
His voice came out muffled and goofy.
"Peekaboo..."
He pulled his hands away quickly, widening his eyes.
Azura giggled so hard she wiggled.
Then, mimicking her father, she raised her own tiny, chubby hands and attempted to cover her eyes.
She missed the mark entirely, her small palms landing squarely over her own ears.
She froze, a look of profound, adorable confusion crossing her tiny features as she realized she could still see everything.
Kai broke out into a warm, booming laugh, reaching down to gently tickle her stomach.
"Close enough, my little wolf. Close enough."
Helen watched the scene unfold, her gaze tracing the contours of her husband’s broad shoulders and the small, delicate fingers of her daughter.
Her husband and her beautiful baby girl.
Her entire world was contained right there on that single patchwork blanket on the floor, playing a silly, simple game that served no other purpose than to make one another blissfully happy.
She wanted nothing more than to freeze this exact second in time.
She wanted to scoop up the warmth of the room, seal it inside a glass jar, and hold it tight against her chest for the rest of her days.
And then, an explosion tore through the castle.
The sound was unlike any noise Helen had ever experienced in her life.
It was not the deep rumble of summer thunder, and it was not the sharp crack of a massive oak tree snapping in half during a storm.
It was a hollow, catastrophic boom that seemed to originate from the very center of the earth, traveling instantly up through the heavy stone foundations, through the floorboards, and straight up into Helen’s bones.
The entire nursery shuddered violently.
On the wooden windowsill, a delicate ceramic vase tipped over, hitting the floor and shattering into a hundred jagged white pieces.
A fine layer of grey dust rained down from the ceiling beams, coating the air.
Helen shielded her daughter with her body, protecting her from anything that might land on her.
Azura’s face changed in a heartbeat.
The beautiful, toothless smile vanished instantly.
Her lower lip pushed out into a trembling pout, and her tiny chin began to shake violently... the heartbreaking way a baby’s chin shakes when they cannot comprehend what is happening, but they know with absolute certainty that something is deeply, terribly wrong.
Her wide grey eyes welled with sudden tears as she stared up at her father for protection.
Kai was already standing on his feet before the echoes of the blast had even died away.
He crossed the distance to the heavy glass window in three massive, explosive strides, his body going completely still the moment he looked out over the courtyard.
It was that terrifying, absolute stillness that always took over him when extreme danger arrived... the rigid posture of an Alpha calculating the fastest, most lethal way to eliminate a threat.
"We are under attack," Kai said, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register that sent a shiver straight down Helen’s spine.
Helen felt the blood completely drain from her face, leaving her limbs feeling like blocks of ice.
Kai was already moving, his actions blurring with a terrifying speed.
"Get the baby right now. You need to get to safety immediately. Do not wait for me."
He marched over to a heavy wooden chest pushed against the stone wall, ripping the lid open and pulling out a thick, dark traveling cloak and a long strip of opaque, black cloth.
He turned around, tossing the dark fabric directly into Helen’s lap.
"Cover your face entirely," Kai ordered, his green eyes burning with an intense, frantic urgency.
"Cover the baby completely. Do not let a single person see those white strands in your hair. Take her straight down to the underground escape passage. Do not stop for anything, Helen. Do not look back over your shoulder."
Helen pushed herself off the bed, her legs trembling violently as she rushed over to the blanket, scooping Azura up against her chest.
The baby buried her face into Helen’s neck, her tiny body shaking.
"Kai... please, come with us..."
"Go!" Kai roared, turning his back to the window to face her fully.
The softness he had possessed just moments ago was entirely gone, replaced by the crushing, absolute authority of an Alpha.
It was the fierce voice that had commanded thousands of brutal soldiers, faced down massive rival packs, and never once asked for permission to spill blood.
But as he looked down at Helen standing there, clutching their terrified daughter in her arms, something behind his fierce green eyes cracked wide open.
He stepped forward, his large hand reaching out to cup the back of Helen’s head, pulling her forehead against his for one desperate, fleeting second.
"I will find you," he whispered, his voice cracking with an intense emotion.
"I promise you, Helen. I will always find you."
Helen wanted to speak.
There were a thousand desperate confessions, a thousand pleas, and a thousand declarations of love tearing through her throat, but the heavy sound of wood splintering in the lower corridors told her there was no time left.
She turned, tucked the baby tight against her heart, and ran.
The main corridor was absolute, terrifying chaos.
Panicked servants were sprinting in every direction, dropping silver trays and bundles of linens onto the stone floor.
Armed guards were shouting orders at the top of their lungs, their heavy iron boots clanking loudly against the floorboards as they rushed toward the grand staircase.
Another massive explosion rocked the building, closer this time, causing the heavy stones beneath Helen’s bare feet to vibrate violently.
Helen quickly pulled the dark strip of cloth over her nose and mouth, tucking the excess fabric securely around Azura’s small head to shield her from the smoke and dust.
The baby was crying now, letting out small, muffled, and utterly confused wails against her mother’s collarbone.
Helen held her even tighter, compressing the child against her ribcage, and ran as fast as her legs could carry her.
She knew the layout of this ancient pack house better than almost anyone alive, having spent years exploring its quiet corners while carrying her child.
She knew every winding corridor, every hidden spiral staircase, and every secret door.
And she knew exactly where the ancient escape passage was located, the one constructed centuries ago by the pack’s ancestors for this exact scenario.
She slid around a sharp corner in the east wing, rushing toward a massive, faded tapestry depicting an ancient forest battle.
