Back to the 80s: Reclaiming My Name, My Family, and My Life
Chapter 27: There’s a Mole
Chapter 27: Chapter 27: There’s a Mole
"My girl!"
Shen Zhenwu immediately whipped his head around and rushed to Song Yao’s side.
He checked her arms for injuries, then felt her forehead for a fever.
After confirming she was unharmed, his throat tightened, and his eyes began to redden.
The next second, he spun around, pointed at the man on the floor, and his voice exploded.
"Go after them! Find out who has the gall to pull these dirty tricks right under my nose, time and time again!"
"Yes, sir!"
The adjutant snapped a salute and turned to leave.
As he walked, he pulled out a notebook and quickly jotted down the suspect’s description and a summary of the incident.
Just as he reached the door, he ran head-on into the hospital director and department head, who were rushing over.
Both were drenched in sweat, their white coats not even on properly.
The director spoke, his voice trembling.
"Sir... we rushed over as soon as we heard your daughter was in trouble. This..."
The department head stood beside him, head lowered, looking extremely nervous.
Shen Zhenwu whipped his head around and roared, pointing at the man on the floor.
"Open your eyes and look! Is this man one of your doctors?"
The director stumbled a step forward, squinting to get a good look at the man’s face.
After a moment, he froze on the spot.
"Doctor Huang? You weren’t scheduled for a shift last night!"
The department head also leaned in for a look and shook his head repeatedly.
"Impossible! He’s not on duty at all today!"
"So he really is one of yours."
Shen Zhenwu’s eyes turned cold.
"He snuck into my daughter’s room after four in the morning, claiming to be doing rounds? With a scalpel in his pocket? Do you people always do rounds at this hour?"
The director waved his hands frantically, beads of sweat popping out on his forehead.
"Impossible! We do our rounds at eight in the morning. Only the critical care unit has night patrols, but never at such a ridiculous hour!"
The department head hurriedly added.
"And all medical staff are logged in and out. This man was definitely not scheduled for a shift tonight!"
Shen Zhenwu understood everything perfectly now.
’Wrong time, carrying a weapon, and not even his shift...’
He leaned over, stared at Doctor Huang, and sneered.
"At this point, why are you still playing dumb?"
Doctor Huang’s shoulders trembled slightly.
Shen Zhenwu strode forward and shoved him against the wall.
The director grew furious as well, glaring and cursing.
"Doctor Huang! Have you lost your mind? This is Mr. Shen’s daughter! Not only are you ruining my hospital’s reputation, but you’re also trying to bring about a catastrophe!"
The sound of urgent footsteps came from the end of the hallway as two more security officers arrived.
But a single look from Shen Zhenwu stopped them at the door.
No outsiders were to interfere.
Leaning against the wall, Doctor Huang slowly slid to the floor.
He knew he wouldn’t escape today.
Whether he confessed or not, the outcome would be the same.
But he knew even more clearly that if he talked, his family would be completely finished.
Better to take the secret to his grave.
"I’m done talking. Do whatever you want."
After saying this, a bitter smile touched the corners of his mouth.
Hearing this, Shen Zhenwu kicked him in the face.
"AHH!"
Doctor Huang’s nose broke on the spot, and blood gushed out.
He wiped at it haphazardly with his hand, which came away covered in blood. His vision began to blur.
Shen Zhenwu crouched down, grabbed Doctor Huang by the collar, and hauled him up slightly.
"Who sent you?"
Kneeling on the floor and convulsing in pain, Doctor Huang clenched his jaw and didn’t answer.
Shen Zhenwu pulled out his weapon, his face expressionless.
A shot rang out in the enclosed space, making the windows rattle.
The medical staff screamed and dropped to the floor. Some squatted in a corner, cowering with their hands over their heads.
Doctor Huang clutched his foot and curled up, his body twitching violently.
The pool of blood on the floor spread quickly.
"Who sent you!"
Shen Zhenwu asked, enunciating every word.
Trembling, Doctor Huang looked up and met Shen Zhenwu’s terrifyingly dark eyes, his whole body stiffening.
"Sir!"
Zhang Jianwei appeared at the door, his head beaded with sweat.
He had gotten the news later than Shen Zhenwu and lived farther away, so he had to sprint the whole way here.
Reaching the hospital room, he forced himself to stand straight and regulate his breathing.
This matter was too important for him to lose his composure.
But when he caught sight of the injured Doctor Huang out of the corner of his eye, his heart still clenched.
’This is a goddamn disaster.’
Assassins had appeared one after another on his turf, and all of them were targeting Mr. Shen and his daughter.
This wasn’t a spontaneous act, but the result of long-term surveillance.
The enemy had a great deal of inside information and was highly organized.
For such an enemy to have been lurking under his nose for so long without him noticing... it was a complete joke.
Zhang Jianwei cursed silently.
’Those desperados must have a death wish!’
He wished he could personally drag out the mastermind and execute them.
"Zhang Jianwei, killers keep popping up on your turf. Do you have any idea what that means?"
Although the words were directed at him, Shen Zhenwu didn’t turn around.
He remained half-crouched, staring at Doctor Huang, his finger still on the trigger.
Zhang Jianwei gritted his teeth hard.
"It means there’s a sizable gang hiding in Nanhui City!"
Shen Zhenwu’s voice was icy.
"It’s not just that. They can track my movements as if they have me in their sights, and they even know my daughter’s situation inside and out. This proves someone on the inside here in Nanhui is leaking information."
Zhang Jianwei couldn’t refute this, but in his heart, he refused to accept it.
Admitting there was an internal problem was tantamount to admitting his own dereliction of duty.
A thorough investigation would likely expose certain inappropriate networks among his subordinates.
He stood ramrod straight and snapped a salute.
"Reporting, sir! I, Zhang Jianwei, will stake my life on it: every soldier in Nanhui is a man of iron integrity!"
Only then did Shen Zhenwu turn his head, his gaze falling on Zhang Jianwei’s face.
A few seconds of silence passed, as if he were trying to see through to his soul.
But the stubbornness in Zhang Jianwei’s eyes only made Shen Zhenwu’s heart sink further.
’Loyalty shouldn’t be blind, especially not at a time like this.’
’If everyone was clean, why the repeated attacks?’
’There was only one answer.’
’The problem wasn’t somewhere else.’
’If the problem wasn’t in Nanhui, then it was someone close to him.’
Familiar faces flashed through Shen Zhenwu’s mind.
His personal guards, the clerks in his office, the operators in the communications unit...
’Which one was the most likely?’
He began to go through them one by one, a chill running down his spine the more he thought about it.
’This person saw him every day, listened to every word he said, and maybe even helped him with his coat and hat.’
’And yet, he had never noticed anything amiss.’
Just as he was thinking this, a jeep pulled up to the hospital entrance.
A sentry immediately rushed forward, shouting a challenge.
"Halt! Who goes there?"
Xiao Li quickly jumped out of the vehicle.
He pulled his identification from his coat, held it up for the sentry to see, and spoke crisply.
"I am Li Hanchen, Mr. Shen’s personal guard. I’m under orders to escort two important suspects to see him."
The sentry took the ID and carefully checked the information on it.
After confirming it was authentic, he immediately stepped aside to clear the way.
"Go ahead."
Xiao Li dragged two people with their hands tied behind their backs inside.
The moment Song Shunqiang and his wife saw the heavily guarded scene, their legs began to turn to jelly.
On the way over, they had been discussing how to handle the situation.
They planned to play dumb, cry and make a scene, and insist they knew nothing.
But as soon as they reached the entrance and saw the fully armed soldiers, all those ideas were scared right out of them.
Song Shunqiang’s lips trembled uncontrollably, and he finally couldn’t stop himself from speaking.
"Comrade... this really has nothing to do with me! I’ve always treated Song Yao like my own daughter! I never mistreated her all these years! You’ve probably made a mistake! If you don’t believe me, ask Liu Yumin! The baby girl she brought home back then wasn’t even mine!"
As he spoke, he looked desperately back at Liu Yumin.
