Chapter 1162: Fate
“AAAAAH!!!”
As Yu Cheng yelled, a scream tore through the air.
The one screaming was Gu Daocheng. A hand had pierced through his back, radiating a searing concentrated Destruction energy.
The Sage Mother of the West stood behind Gu Daocheng, her face as unperturbed as an ancient well, as if this was some insignificant matter. But she exuded a light that bound Gu Daocheng and gave him no chance to escape.
“Sage Mother!” everyone cried out in alarm.
Wu Antian and the others tried to rush at the Sage Mother of the West and save Gu Daocheng, but Yu Cheng swung his sword and intercepted them.
“But… why…” Gu Daocheng struggled out, staring at the Sage Mother in disbelief.
“Because I was on His Majesty’s side from the start,” the Sage Mother casually replied. “I have never, ever betrayed him.”
“But he went missing and abandoned you…”
“That was not abandoning, but entrusting us with an important mission,” the Sage Mother replied. “Some people had to stay on this world and prepare for His Majesty’s return.”Gu Daocheng’s eyes widened, but as he tried to speak, he found that he didn’t have the strength to. He had consumed too much Dao power to save everyone, and now that it was his turn, he was powerless. He now understood why Yu Cheng had been in no rush to kill him, because he had been preparing for this moment from the very beginning.
He wanted to waste Gu Daocheng’s Dao power so that he could be slain in a single strike.
He was even willing to attack the Sage Mother to this end—in the battle just now, it was the Sage Mother who had been killed the most by Yu Cheng.
The Sage Mother wasn’t the Immortal Emperor’s enemy, but his most loyal subordinate. Only now did the other Immortals realize this.
They also understood why the Sage Mother’s Twin Karma Lotus had ceased working. It wasn’t because of the Wish Granting Book, but because the Sage Mother had stopped it on her own.
But if the Wish Granting Book hadn’t been used on the Twin Karma Lotus, what had it been used for?
The same thought appeared in their minds at the same time.
The answer would soon be revealed.
The Three Sages Ancestor thrust his palm at Yu Cheng.
This Dao-Proving Saint Immortal had finally made his move, not to act for the Heavenly Dao, but for the sake of his own Dao!
As this palm descended, the world seemed to descend into darkness, the stars in the heavens shuddering at its might.
But at the same time, Yu Cheng’s body exploded with power, his energy surging, and then he swung his sword at the descending palm, the Xuanyuan Sword erupting with a tyrannical light akin to the blazing sun.
This was the attack of a Dao-Proving Saint Immortal, and even if his real body wasn’t here, even if Yu Cheng had the Twelve Great Daos, he still needed all of his power to contend against it.
This meant he had no attention to spare on Wandering Ferry and the others.
The five Immortals were delighted, Wandering Ferry, the Ageless Child, Godhead Guangfa, Wu Antian, and the Illusory Demoness all attacking Yu Cheng. But as they attacked, there was a dazzling flash of lightning on the horizon.
This lightning was motley, not the attack of one person, but thirteen, each one at least a True Immortal, with even one Gold Immortal among them. Their attack forced the five Immortals to defend themselves.
“Red Wind, Immortal Light, True Lord Wuxiang, the Bejeweled Star Lord… it’s you!” Wandering Ferry cried out in terror.
In the distance, one figure after another appeared, one of them clearly the Bejeweled Star Lord, who had once appeared back in the ruins of the court. They all looked at Yu Cheng and called out, “Your Majesty!”
Down below, Scarlet Pine was elated. “You’re back! Haha, you’re back!”
These people were all former subordinates of the court who had used the Fake Sky, False Sun Immortal Art to enter hibernation, but their presence here was a surprise.
What of the people who were chasing them?
Why weren’t they here?
Everyone was confused, and then they remembered the Wish Granting Book.
This was a Fate Dao Art!
It was Fate that had let them throw off their pursuers, Fate that had them appear here in a timely manner to come to Yu Cheng’s aid.
On that subject, it was rather ridiculous. Yu Cheng was seeking to unite the Daos and transcend them, which had enraged the will of the heavens, so he should have been abandoned by Fate. This was why he had been ambushed by so many Immortals. But the Immortals representing the will of the heavens could not control Fate. On the contrary, it was Yu Cheng who was playing with them using Fate, which was rather disheartening.
Ultimately, this could happen because the Heavenly Dao was not a person.
Perhaps heaven had a will, but it was ultimately not a real existence. It lacked a human intelligence and could not think in a systematic way. Even when facing threats, it still operated in its own way. Otherwise, it could have just finished off the likes of Yu Cheng and Tang Jie with a series of Heavenly Tribulations instead of going through all this trouble. Just as Yu Cheng had said, if the Heavenly Dao were omnipotent, there would never have even been existences like Yu Cheng that were trying to surpass it.
The Heavenly Dao was not omnipotent. It had rules that guided its actions, and so long as one could grasp these rules, then even Yu Cheng could play around with Fate. This was comparable to a sovereign fearful of a powerful minister’s authority that would gather forces in the shadows to resist them but never dare to directly seize their authority.
So long as he had that authority, Yu Cheng could do what he wanted!
Thus, Yu Cheng was able to reverse the situation with one page of the Wish Granting Book, bringing his loyal subordinates to the battlefield. He had even drawn out the battle with the five Immortals for this purpose. Otherwise, with the Sage Mother as his inside agent, he could have made his move long ago.
These thirteen were the closest to this area and so the first to arrive. They were led by a cultivator with a long beard who laughed, “Scarlet Pine, my brother, you’re standing on the sidelines while His Majesty is fighting. Is that okay?”
Scarlet Pine blushed. “His Majesty didn’t permit me to participate, so what can I do?”
“That’s because His Majesty cherishes you and is worried that you will lose your life. But now that we’re here, His Majesty no longer needs to worry!” another Immortal said.
“That’s right!” Scarlet Pine laughed and flew up, his crimson spear manifesting a giant blood-colored python that let out a hiss.
He had been holding back for too long, so he immediately unleashed his full might, at which all the Immortals laughed and shouted, “Kill!”
They charged at the five Immortals.
Although most of them were True Immortals, their strength was not to be underestimated, and that wasn’t even considering that they were led by a Gold Immortal.
This man was called the Warheaven Wolf, of the Eight Heavenly Kings of the Court of Myriad Domains, and a fierce warrior. Originally a True Immortal, after ten thousand years of hibernation through the Fake Sky, False Sun Immortal Art, he had finally become a Gold Immortal. As he attacked the five Immortals, he shouted, “Xi Linglong, you had us really fooled! So you were always loyal to His Majesty!”
At this time, Gu Daocheng was still bound by the Sage Mother, his life still withering away toward death.
The Sage Mother of the West smiled. “Congratulations, Heaven Wolf. After ten thousand years of hibernation, you really did become a Gold Immortal. Alas, I am still where I am, unable to make a single step forward. Proving my Dao and becoming a Saint is too difficult.”
Warheaven Wolf said, “It was all for the sake of His Majesty.”
The Sage Mother of the West shook her head. “No, it was for myself. I was too arrogant, thinking that I didn’t need the False Sun Art, that I could prove my Dao in these ten thousand years, so I refused His Majesty’s proposal. But alas, I ultimately failed.”
Warheaven Wolf froze for a moment before saying with a laugh, “Who cares who it was for? It’s all good so long as you didn’t betray His Majesty. Shit, you were quite ruthless when you were chasing us, and I hated you so much that I wanted to eat you alive. But now, the oath I swore is for nothing. It’s a good thing I didn’t swear one on the Heavenly Dao.”
“Even if it were a Heavenly Dao Oath, so what? With my will, there is no will of the heavens!” Yu Cheng commented.
“You’re right, Your Majesty! There is no will of the heavens while Your Majesty reigns!” Another voice rang out from the distance, and a dazzling streak of sword energy flew toward the five Immortals. Another True Immortal had arrived.
Meanwhile, the Sage Mother had finally absorbed all of Gu Daocheng’s power. With a wave of her hand, Gu Daocheng turned to dust, and with another wave, she collected the Silk Brocade World. However, her complexion was pale after receiving Gu Daocheng’s dying counterattack. But she did not stop, sending a frosty wave at the Ageless Child.
Shocked, the Ageless Child shouted, “Retreat!”
Thanks to the Wish Granting Book, more and more former subordinates of the court were arriving, and the real body of the Three Sages Ancestor was not here, so there was no way he could defeat Yu Cheng. In truth, given how strong Yu Cheng was, even if the Three Sages Ancestor came personally, he still might not be able to kill Yu Cheng. With control over the Twelve Great Daos, Yu Cheng was far stronger than the average Gold Immortal. In such a disadvantageous situation, it was best to leave as quickly as possible, gather some more strength, and try again.
Yu Cheng laughed. “You think you can come and go as you please? It’s not that easy! Leave your lives here!”
He clenched his left hand, and Immortal energy wrapped around them, while Warheaven Wolf and the others redoubled their offensive. Two Gold Immortals and thirteen True Immortals still weren’t enough to deal with five Gold Immortals, but time was on their side. More and more former members of the court would be coming, and the five Immortals were nothing more than caged beasts.
These were Boundless Gold Immortals! Each death represented a huge loss.
The five Immortals desperately tried to break out, but escaping under Yu Cheng’s watch was easier said than done. The Infinite Palace once more imprisoned the five, and Yu Cheng even started to somewhat ignore the Three Sages Ancestor, constantly unleashing Immortal Arts at the trapped Immortals.
“Aaaagh!” Wu Antian let out a cry of despair as the Xuanyuan Sword chopped off most of his arm. Fortunately, he acted decisively and cut off the remainder of his arm, or else the Destruction power would have infiltrated his entire body.
But Yu Cheng unleashed terrifying attack after attack, making the five of them despair.
At this moment, there was another flash of light.
Just when everyone thought that another member of the court had arrived, this light impacted against Yu Cheng.
