Chapter 215: The Weight of Numbers

The smaller ones fell easy.

One clean cut through the joint. One rising thrust under the arm. One short, violent climb up a collapsing body to finish the neck. Elara had dropped more than she could count that way. The dark was full of their cooling corpses, and still the ground kept delivering more.

Then the pattern changed.

A heavier set of footfalls rolled through the black — slower, wider, carrying real mass. Elara felt the air shift before she saw anything. She stepped back on instinct and brought the blade up. The thing that came out of the darkness was larger than the ones she had been killing. The silver plating was thicker, the limbs longer, the bloodshot eyes set deeper under a heavier brow ridge. When it swung, the force of the missed strike alone made the ground under her boots tremble.

She did not try to take it the same way.

Elara slid under the first heavy sweep, cut hard across the back of its knee, and kept moving. The plating there was denser. Her blade bit, but not deep enough to cripple. The creature turned faster than something that size should have and brought both arms down like hammers. She threw herself sideways. The impact cratered the stone where she had been standing.

A smaller Colossus tried to take her back while she was recovering.

She killed it almost without looking — one reverse cut across the throat — then had to throw herself flat as the larger one swept a limb through the space at chest height. The wind of it pulled at her clothes. She rolled, came up close to its lead leg, and drove the blade in with both hands, twisting for maximum damage. This time the joint gave. The beast staggered. Elara climbed its falling weight and put three short, brutal thrusts into the neck gap before it could crush her against the ground.

It took too long.

While she finished it, three smaller ones closed the distance. She dropped the first with a single cut, took a deep scrape across the ribs from the second, and killed the third by forcing it into the still-twitching bulk of the larger corpse. Blood ran warm down her side. She wiped her eyes with her wrist and kept moving.

The dark did not empty.

If anything, it grew denser.

Elara stopped trying to clear space and started trying to survive the next ten seconds. The smaller Colossi came in packs now, using the heavier ones as moving walls. She would cut down two, maybe three, and then a larger shape would force her to give ground or risk being crushed. Every time she committed to a finishing blow on a big one, the smaller ones punished her for the time it cost. Her left arm was slower than it should have been. The cut on her thigh burned with every explosive step. Breathing had become something she had to think about.

She adapted.

She stopped climbing the large ones unless she had no choice. Instead she crippled — knees, elbows, the thinner plating under the arms — and left them broken on the ground for the smaller ones to trip over. It was uglier. It was less clean. But it kept her from being buried under the time it took to finish a heavy kill.

A new sound rolled through the black.

Not one or two heavy sets of footfalls.

Many.

Elara’s grip tightened on the blade. She could feel the vibration through the stone now — a low, continuous tremor of mass on the move. The test had stopped feeding her manageable waves. It was starting to push real volume.

She set her feet, brought the blade back to center, and waited for the dark to deliver whatever came next.

It did not make her wait long.
