Chapter 214: Cut Until Nothing Moves

  • Next Chapter

The gate sealed behind her and the darkness took everything.

Elara did not wait for her eyes to adjust. She already knew they wouldn’t. This place was built to strip advantage. No light. No clear distance. No clean ground. She lowered her stance, blade angled forward, and let her breathing settle into the short, controlled rhythm she used when space was limited and mistakes cost blood.

The first one came from her left.

She felt the displacement of air more than she heard it. A heavy body moving fast through black. Elara stepped in instead of back, cut low across where the joint should be, and felt the blade bite through silver plating into something denser underneath. The creature screamed — high and wrong — and staggered. She finished it with a second cut across the neck gap before it could recover.

Warm fluid hit her forearm.

She was already moving.

Two more came out of the dark almost on top of the first. She killed the closer one with a rising cut that found the thinner plating under the arm, then had to throw herself sideways as the second swept a thick limb through the space where her head had been. The wind of the missed strike pulled at her hair. She rolled, came up, and drove the blade into the back of its knee. When it dropped, she climbed its falling weight and put the point through the base of its skull.

Three down.

The dark did not care.

They started coming in numbers after that.

Elara stopped counting individual kills and started tracking pressure. Left side heavy. Right side lighter but faster. Something larger moving further back, using the smaller ones as cover. She cut, stepped, cut again. Every exchange cost her something — a scrape along the ribs, a jarred shoulder, the growing burn in her thighs from constant explosive movement. The Colossi did not tire. She could feel it in the way they kept the same force behind every strike. Her body did not have that luxury.

A heavy impact caught her across the back and drove the air out of her lungs.

She hit the ground hard, skidded, and forced herself up before the follow-up could land. Her blade came up in time to take the next strike on the flat instead of the edge. The shock ran all the way into her shoulders. She stepped inside the creature’s reach, too close for its heavy limbs to work properly, and opened it under the arm with three short, vicious cuts. It collapsed. She was already turning for the next one.

Blood ran down her side. She ignored it.

The fight stretched. Time lost meaning inside the black. There was only the next body, the next angle, the next decision about whether to kill cleanly or cripple and move. Sometimes she had space and the cuts stayed precise. Sometimes the dark filled with so many silver-plated shapes that all she could do was keep her blade moving and her feet under her. Once a limb caught her across the thigh and opened a deep line of fire. She killed the owner of that limb with more force than necessary and kept going.

Her breathing grew harsher.

The clean rhythm she had started with began to fray. Blocks came more often than kills. The constant impact of bone plating against her guard sent numbness up both arms. She could feel the slow accumulation of damage the same way she used to feel it in the colonies when a job ran longer than the body could honestly support — small failures stacking until something important gave out.

She refused to let it give out here.

A larger Colossus broke through the press. It hit harder than the others. The first exchange nearly took the blade from her hands. The second drove her back three full steps. Elara dropped low under the third strike, planted, and put everything she had into a single upward cut aimed at the joint where the heavy arm met the torso. The plating cracked. She hit the same point again. Then a third time. When the arm finally hung useless, she climbed the creature’s own bulk and drove the blade down through the neck with both hands.

It took too long.

While she finished it, two smaller ones closed. One raked across her shoulder. The other nearly took her leg. She killed them both in a messy, close-range scramble that left her gasping and dripping.

The dark kept delivering more.

Elara wiped blood from her eyes with the back of her wrist and reset her stance. Her arms shook once before she locked them still. The blade felt heavier than it had when she first stepped through the gate. She knew what that meant. Endurance was a finite resource. The test had no interest in whether she had enough of it left.

She moved forward anyway.

Another wave hit.

She cut.

She kept cutting.

The black around her filled with the sound of silver armor breaking and bodies falling, and somewhere under all of it Elara held onto the only rule that still mattered inside this place:

Don’t die
