Ashes of the star forge
Chapter 194: Collapse
The platform lifted another few centimeters under the pressure from below.
Stone screamed as the remaining cracks spread. Fog poured through every fracture in thick, wet bursts. The broad pale shape underneath pushed upward again, and this time the slab could not hold.
“Move!” Ryzek shouted.
There was nowhere clean to move to.
The platform split down the middle with a final, heavy crack. Both halves tilted sharply outward. Lian lost his footing and slid toward the fog. He drove his blade into the stone and used it as an anchor, boots scraping against the broken surface. Elara dropped low and grabbed the edge of a still-connected section, muscles straining as the slab under her shifted. Ryzek released a short burst of energy downward, trying to force whatever was rising back long enough for them to adjust.
It only delayed the inevitable.
The larger half of the platform gave way completely and dropped into the fog. The section Lian and Elara still clung to followed a second later, breaking into smaller pieces as it fell. All three of them went down with it.
The fall was short and ugly.
Lian hit something solid and wet before he reached any real depth. The surface under him was uneven and yielding, like heavily muscled flesh covered in a slick membrane. Fog closed over his head for a moment, thick and cold, before he forced himself upright. The air inside the fog was heavier and carried a sharp, biological stench.
“Elara!” he called.
“Here.” Her voice came from his right, close but partially muffled.
A flash of amber light cut through the fog on his left as Ryzek burned a space clear around himself. The light showed glimpses of what they had landed on.
They were standing on the creature itself.
The body beneath them was massive, pale, and segmented in long horizontal ridges. Thick limbs continued to rise from the surrounding fog, but now they could also see the broader structure those limbs belonged to. Parts of it shifted under their feet like a living landscape. Here and there, clusters of the smaller finger-like appendages opened and closed along the surface, tasting the air.
“This thing is huge,” Elara said, already cutting a limb that reached for her leg. “We’re on top of it.”
“Then we stay on top of it,” Ryzek answered. His voice was tight. “If we go under, we do not come back.”
Lian did not waste time agreeing. He killed another limb that tried to wrap his ankle and moved closer to the other two. The surface under them rolled suddenly, forcing all three to adjust their stance. A ridge of flesh rose like a wave and tried to fold over Ryzek’s position. The Veyrani blasted it apart with a heavy burst of amber energy, spraying colorless fluid across the fog.
The creature reacted to the damage.
Multiple limbs converged on Ryzek’s location at once. Lian and Elara both moved in, cutting from either side to keep him from being overwhelmed. For a few seconds the three of them fought in a tight cluster, blades and energy flashing against the constant press of pale segments.
“We need higher ground,” Lian said between cuts. “If this thing dives or rolls, we’re finished.”
“There is no higher ground,” Elara shot back. She drove her blade through a thick joint and kicked the severed piece away. “Only this.”
Ryzek released another wide arc of energy that bought them a brief pocket of space. In the fading light of the blast they saw a section of the creature’s body that rose higher than the rest — a broad, ridged plateau of flesh that stayed above the worst of the fog.
“There,” Ryzek said.
They moved.
The surface under them shifted and shuddered with every step. Limbs continued to rise and strike. Twice Lian had to stop and cut himself free. Once Elara nearly lost her footing when a fold of membrane tried to trap her boot. Ryzek covered the rear, his energy bursts growing shorter and more controlled as he managed what power he had left.
They reached the higher ridge of flesh and climbed onto it. The position was only relatively better. They were still on the creature. The fog still surrounded them on all sides. But at least the surface here was broader and more stable for the moment.
Below them, the rest of the massive body continued to move. Long limbs swept through the fog in searching patterns. The finger-like clusters along the skin opened and closed with increasing speed, as if the creature was finally focusing its full attention on the three small things that had landed on its back and refused to die quietly.
Lian wiped fluid from his eyes and checked the other two.
“We hurt it until it decides we’re not worth the trouble,” he said. “Or until we find a way off.”
Elara gave a short, humorless breath.
“And if it decides to go under completely?”
Ryzek’s four amber eyes stayed on the shifting fog around them.
“Then we finish this fast.”
