Chapter 193: The Platform Breaks

  • Next Chapter

The crack across the center of the platform widened with a sharp, grinding sound.

Fog sprayed upward through the fracture in thick bursts. The pale, ridged surface underneath pushed harder. The entire stone slab tilted by a few degrees, forcing all three of them to shift their weight or slide toward the edges. Severed limbs still thrashed across the surface, making the footing even worse.

Lian drove his blade into the nearest rising segment and used the impact to steady himself. The thing beneath the platform was strong. Each upward shove sent new cracks spiderwebbing outward from the center. Small pieces of stone broke free and dropped into the fog, disappearing without a sound.

Elara killed two thinner limbs that tried to take advantage of the instability, then planted her boots wider to keep her balance. Ryzek released a concentrated burst of amber energy straight down into the largest fracture. The blast punched through the stone and into whatever was pushing from below. A deep, muffled vibration answered him — not a roar, more like a heavy impact transmitted through fluid and flesh. The upward pressure stopped for a moment.

It did not last.

New limbs exploded from the fog on all sides at once. These were thicker than before, some nearly as wide as a man’s torso, and they moved with greater force. One slammed onto the platform near Lian and hooked the edge hard enough to chip the stone. He cut through it at the joint, but the sheer weight of the limb made the platform shudder again.

The creature under them was adapting.

Instead of only sending the long, segmented grasping limbs, it began pushing up broad, flat sections of pale tissue that tried to wrap over the edges of the platform like wet sheets. Wherever those sheets touched the stone, they stuck and began pulling downward with slow, steady strength. The platform’s tilt increased.

Ryzek snarled something in his own language and poured more energy into his arms. He swept both hands in a wide arc, releasing a crescent of compressed amber force that severed several of the thick limbs and tore through one of the clinging sheets. The relief was temporary. More tissue rose to replace what he destroyed.

Lian’s footing slipped when a fresh crack opened under his right boot. He dropped to one knee and cut upward through a limb that immediately tried to coil around his neck. Colorless fluid sprayed across his face and burned in a thin line along his cheek. He wiped it away with his forearm and kept moving.

Elara was forced closer to the center as the outer edges of the platform became too unstable. A heavy limb swept low toward her legs. She jumped it, landed, and drove her blade down through the segment with both hands. The hooked tip still managed to rake across her calf before the limb fell away. Blood ran freely into her boot.

The platform gave another violent lurch.

A large section near the far edge simply broke off and fell into the fog. The piece of stone was large enough that it should have made a heavy impact when it landed. Instead there was only a thick, wet sound, followed by the noise of something large shifting below.

The thing in the fog was big enough to catch falling stone without effort.

Lian, Elara, and Ryzek were now standing on less than two-thirds of the original platform. The remaining surface continued to crack under the combined pressure from below and the weight of the limbs still attacking from every side. Fog spilled more aggressively onto the stone, making every step treacherous.

A new type of limb rose near Ryzek.

This one was different. Instead of a hooked tip, it ended in a cluster of smaller, finger-like appendages that opened and closed with deliberate motion. It reached for him with clear intent, trying to grab rather than simply coil. Ryzek blasted it apart with a focused energy spear, but the sight of it changed the tone of the fight. The creature below was not only strong. It was capable of more precise action than the earlier limbs had suggested.

The platform tilted harder.

Lian felt the stone under him shift and immediately moved toward the most stable remaining section. Elara did the same. Ryzek followed, still cutting anything that came within reach. The three of them ended up back to back in the center of what was left of the platform, surrounded by rising fog and an increasing number of pale, glistening limbs.

Below them, something massive began to rise in earnest.

The fog swelled upward in a wide dome. A broad, pale shape pressed against the underside of the broken platform hard enough to lift the entire remaining slab several centimeters before the stone began to split completely.

The platform was about to give way.
