"Hey! Come over here! I’m sure you’re not ready to fight this huge number of monsters. It’s just the two of you, after all!"

The voices came from the second floor of the building. Without wasting any time, Ivy grabbed Anya’s arm and led her toward the second floor, which appeared to be a safe place.

Before the monsters could reach Ivy and Anya, the huge metal gate that the survivors had constructed on the second floor was slammed shut with a loud bang.

BANG!

The monsters immediately began pounding against the other side of the gate, their furious hissing sounds filling the air. Their sharp claws scraped against the metal, creating an unpleasant screech that made the entire building seem to tremble.

However, the survivors on the second floor looked surprisingly calm.

In fact, they looked almost too good.

None of them appeared exhausted or frightened, as though they had never truly experienced the horrors of the apocalypse. Their clothes were relatively clean, their bodies were well-fed, and there was no obvious sign of injury among them and what was even more surprising was that they’re all men.

Yet Ivy and Anya didn’t waste time studying the survivors.

Their gazes quickly returned to the iron gate, which the monsters outside were still relentlessly pounding against.

"Don’t worry about them," a masculine voice suddenly said. "They’ll leave once they realize they can’t get inside. They’ve never been able to break through this iron door all these days, after all. You’re safe here."

The voice belonged to an old man.

Ivy and Anya both turned their gazes toward him.

However, the moment Anya recognized the old man, her eyes widened in surprise.

"Mr. Philip!"

Anya’s voice immediately filled with excitement as she hurried toward him and grabbed his hand.

"It’s so good to see you again!"

She smiled brightly before turning her gaze toward Ivy, who remained standing near the gate with a confused expression on her face.

"He’s my former boss," Anya quickly explained. "He was my group leader."

Mr. Philip chuckled lightly.

"I still don’t understand why you suddenly left without saying anything," he remarked, shaking his head. "Even until now, I have no idea what happened."

"Oh, my goodness, child." Mr. Philip gave another light chuckle as he gently patted Anya’s hand. "I just needed to save more survivors, after all. Anyways welcome to my base."

"Save more survivors?"

Ivy’s brows furrowed slightly.

She quietly studied the old man from head to toe.

He was only a middle-aged man, yet he had apparently managed to survive the apocalypse while also protecting an entire group of people but something about him or the second floor didn’t sit right with Ivy.

Where are the survivors he saved? Ivy thought as her gaze slowly swept across the second floor. There were no women here or children. Every survivor she could see was a man.

There’s no way that after rescuing women and children, he would simply leave them behind to fend for themselves.

The survivors surrounding them were all men and that is highly suspicious.

Ivy narrowed her eyes slightly but quickly concealed the suspicion in her expression.

"This is good, then," Ivy finally said, forcing a relieved smile onto her face. She deliberately let out a small cough before continuing.

"Anya and I don’t have to be scared anymore now that Mr. Philip and our brothers are here. Our guns could only do so much against those monsters, after all."

She glanced toward the iron gate and pretended to look frightened.

"You still saved Anya and me in the end. We’re truly grateful to you. Once those monsters leave, we’ll be on our way. We just need to regain our strength first, since we’re only two weak women."

Ivy deliberately emphasized the words weak women as she wanted to see how Mr. Philip would react.

"You don’t have to worry about leaving, though," Mr. Philip replied almost immediately.

A bright smile appeared on his face.

"You can stay here for as long as you want."

"Thank you, Mr. Philip!" Anya replied excitedly.

Although she had a series of questions she desperately wanted to ask Ivy about her strange behavior, she couldn’t ask them in front of Mr. Philip and the other soldiers but then she knew something was clearly wrong

"All right, you two should settle down," Mr. Philip said, still smiling. "I’ll get you something to enjoy while you recover."

Before Ivy and Anya could say anything, Mr. Philip had already turned around and walked away.

The moment he disappeared through another doorway, Anya immediately moved closer to Ivy.

"What’s going on?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her eyes were wide with curiosity and confusion. "Is there anything I need to know?"

"Don’t ask any questions for now," Ivy whispered back immediately."Just enjoy the show."
