Darren glanced at the monsters, then back at Ivy.

"What’s the next step right now, Captain?" he asked, his voice filled with worry. "How are we supposed to get you both out of there?"

Ivy’s eyes hardened as she looked at the monsters below then she looked at the ones approaching from the bridge.

Finally, her gaze shifted toward Desmond, who was still silently enduring the monster’s bite.

The cable wouldn’t hold indefinitely, Darren couldn’t pull them fast enough, and the monsters were closing in from both sides.

There had to be another way.

Darren, is there a way to bring the truck over here? Is there a way for you to get out of that building compound and drive the truck here?" Ivy finally asked, swallowing hard as she glanced toward the other building. "You can keep the survivors inside the building compound. We need the truck if we’re going to get everyone out of here."

"Sure, Captain! I’ll do that right away if that’s the only way," Darren replied immediately, determination evident in his expression.

Without wasting another second, Darren carefully climbed down from the fence of the other building and jumped onto the ground. He landed as gently as he could, immediately crouching low as he scanned his surroundings. The monsters were still primarily focused on Ivy and Desmond, giving him the perfect opportunity to move. He quickly made his way toward the truck parked nearby, taking every precaution to ensure that he didn’t attract the attention of the creatures.

Meanwhile, Ivy remained suspended on the cable with Desmond close beside her. For a brief moment, the chaos around them seemed to fade into the background, and she turned her attention toward the man she had been dragging along with her.

"Before the apocalypse... what kind of person were you in society?" Ivy asked with a heavy sigh, her gaze fixed on Desmond with unmistakable curiosity in her eyes.

Desmond raised an eyebrow and let out a light chuckle. "Why do you keep chatting with me, huh? When I was talking earlier, you told me to keep quiet. Now that I’m quiet, you suddenly want to talk to me?" He shook his head, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I’m not interested."

Ivy rolled her eyes slightly at his response before continuing anyway. "Before the apocalypse, I had wanted to become a teacher, a civil servant after I realized I was no longer rich," she said, her expression growing serious. "I wanted to be able to provide for myself and my children because all my properties had been stolen from me. I couldn’t depend on the life I had before anymore, so I needed to find another way to survive."

"Really?" Desmond’s eyes widened with genuine excitement. "I wanted to become a civil servant or a teacher too."

He paused for a moment before chuckling awkwardly.

"Actually, I wanted to become a police officer, to be precise. But no matter how many exams I wrote, I never passed them. Then I tried to become a teacher, but I wasn’t qualified for that either." Desmond sighed heavily and shook his head. "It feels like every job in this world is something I’m not qualified for."

Despite the ridiculousness of his statement, there was something almost sincere about the way he said it, causing Ivy to stare at him for a moment.

"But why did you want to provide for yourself?" Desmond suddenly asked, tilting his head. "Don’t you have a husband?"

Before Ivy could respond, the loud roar of an engine suddenly filled the air.

Her expression changed instantly.

The sound of the truck echoed through the surrounding buildings, followed almost immediately by the furious growls and snarls of the monsters below. As soon as the creatures noticed the moving vehicle, their attention shifted. Hundreds of heads snapped in its direction before the horde surged toward it.

Ivy and Darren both turned their gazes toward the truck.

"Oh, shit! Those motherfuckers!" Desmond cursed under his breath, his eyes widening as he watched the monsters swarm toward Darren.

Darren had managed to get the truck moving, but the noise had attracted far more attention than any of them had anticipated. The monsters flooded toward the vehicle from every direction, clawing at its tires and slamming their bodies against its sides.

Desmond stared at the horde for several seconds before slowly turning his attention back toward Ivy.

"I think I’ll only return with you next time when I’m captured," he said casually.

Ivy’s eyebrow immediately rose.

"What are you talking about?"

"See you later when you catch me again, Captain..." Desmond gave her a strange little smile. "Or maybe not?"

Before Ivy could understand what he meant, Desmond suddenly released his grip on the cable.

"Desmond!"

Ivy’s eyes widened in utter horror.

Desmond seemed to be immune to monster bites. She had witnessed enough strange things about him to believe that much. But immunity to a bite didn’t necessarily mean immunity to being torn apart. Even if a single monster bite couldn’t infect him, what would happen if dozens of monsters attacked him at once?

What would happen if they ripped him apart before he even had the chance to be bitten?

There was no guarantee that his body could withstand that.

And even if he survived the initial attack, there was no telling what kind of injuries he would suffer.

"Such a bastard!" Ivy cursed underneath her breath, anger burning fiercely across her face.
