Apocalypse Online: I Awaken the Ultimate Bloodline
Chapter 128: The Adaptive Palace II
Chapter 128: The Adaptive Palace II
Adrian raised his kinetic shield, catching the blow head-on. The sheer kinetic weight forced his boots to sink half an inch into the flagstones, but he held his ground.
Simultaneously, the two spinning discs flashed around the guardian’s flank.
SHING!
They struck the side of its armored torso, showering the air with sparks.
The guardian whipped around to swat the discs away—which was precisely what Adrian wanted.
"Now."
His fingers twitched. The three floating daggers altered their trajectory mid-air, curving around the guardian’s blind spot.
Shing! Shing! Shing!
His fingers twitched. The three floating daggers altered their trajectory mid-air, curving around the guardian’s blind spot.
Shing! Shing! Shing!
All three daggers struck the exact same microscopic seam in the guardian’s back armor.
The massive construct staggered forward.
Adrian didn’t hesitate. He closed the distance, a heavy, rune-etched gauntlet instantly forming over his right fist.
BOOM!
A brutal, point-blank kinetic punch smashed into the guardian’s chest, driving it skidding backward across the stone.
The guardian recovered in a heartbeat, its metallic Qi surging to stitch the fracture back together.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. Regeneration?
He didn’t panic. His hands moved in a fluid, complex dance as his arsenal of transformed weapons swarmed the battlefield like a cloud of silver hornets.
He didn’t fight like Asher. Asher had dedicated his entire soul to the purity of the sword.
Adrian, however, was an Armament Master. Every piece of metal on his person was an extension of his martial intent—shields, chains, whirling discs, and spears acting in synchronized harmony
Meanwhile, Across the room.
Whoosh!
The Ice Guardian materialized directly before Nyren, its massive fist encased in a dense, absolute-zero gauntlet of frozen Qi.
Nyren drew her crystal sword in a clean, vertical sweep.
CLANG!
The impact detonated a localized wave of frost crystals between them. Nyren slid back three paces, her breath pluming into white mist.
The guardian pressed the offensive.
Nyren’s eyes turned glacial. She stamped her foot against the flagstones.
CRACK.
A thick sheet of permafrost spread rapidly across the floor, encasing the guardian’s ankles and dragging down its mechanical momentum.
Nyren flicked her wrist.
SHING!
A razor-sharp crescent of Ice Qi swept across the chamber, slicing cleanly across the guardian’s shoulder.
Ice bloomed across the wound, freezing its internal joints.
Nyren vanished into a puff of sub-zero mist, completely erasing her visual presence. The guardian swung blindly into empty air.
Then—
SHING!
Her crystal sword pierced its spine from behind, depositing a volatile core of frozen Qi inside its frame.
She wasn’t trying to overpower the construct through brute force. She was systematically converting the entire chamber into her domain—controlling temperature, altering visibility, and restricting movement until the enemy was frozen in place.
However, the Ice Guardian abruptly released a violent pulse of internal Qi.
BOOM!
The ice encasing its body shattered into sparkling powder, and the frozen floor cracked apart.
Nyren’s brows pulled together. It adapted.
While the battle rage on, Lothe stood motionless near the perimeter, watching the two duels unfold.
On the surface, everything looked standard. The guardians attacked; Adrian and Nyren defended, counterattacked, and slowly gained the upper hand.
Normal combat.
Yet, something felt profoundly wrong.
Lothe’s dark eyes tracked the movements of Adrian’s metal construct. Wait...
His analytical mind caught a subtle anomaly.
The guardians weren’t fighting with genuine killing intent.
There were multiple windows where Adrian’s guardian could have bypassed his shield to deal a fatal blow. Similarly, Nyren’s guardian had possessed at least two clear opportunities to pierce her chest during her mist-stepping phase.
Yet, every single time, they halted their momentum a fraction of an inch short of a lethal strike.
Lothe’s expression slowly hardened. They aren’t trying to kill us.
His pupils dilated. They’re testing parameters.
Without hesitation, Lothe activated [Qi Sight].
The visual spectrum of the chamber dissolved, replaced by a complex, pulsating matrix of metaphysical energy.
Every movement Adrian made left behind a distinct energetic trail. Every weapon transformation, every shift in his metallic Qi circulation, every tactical retreat—
The palace was recording it.
Lothe shifted his perception toward Nyren.
Her sword techniques, her Ice Qi condensation rate, her movement vectors, her defensive recovery times—every single variable was being logged and sucked into the basalt walls.
It’s harvesting tactical data.
Lothe’s breath caught in his throat.
The realization hit him like a physical blow. Why would the palace need to collect data on them now? They had already cleared multiple trials. Their basic abilities had already been exposed during the previous fights.
So why continue recording?
Lothe slowly turned his head, casting his [Qi Sight] deeper into the surrounding masonry, bypassing the physical stone to inspect the internal conduits.
A heavy, primal chill crawled down his spine.
This wasn’t just a localized reaction.
Every battle, every combat style, every miraculous breakthrough, was being compiled and funneled deeper into the core of the Ancient Palace.
Lothe’s voice was barely a breath.
"The palace..."
His eyes dilated.
"...it’s learning."
Not simply processing. Not mechanically grinding resources.
It is learning.
That explained why the trials kept evolving. That explained why the mechanisms altered their attack patterns to counter specific techniques.
The Ancient Palace wasn’t just an automated slaughterhouse or a mindless digestive system.
It was a living, evolving matrix that studied its prey, digested their combat secrets, and integrated those insights into its own design.
At that exact moment, the dual battles reached their climax.
Adrian’s final metallic spear drove straight through his guardian’s central core, shattering it into scrap metal.
At the same side of the hall, Nyren’s crystal sword unleashed a localized frost-storm, reducing the Ice Guardian to a heap of sparkling crystal dust.
Both heirs spun around, breathing heavily, completely unaware of the horrifying truth Lothe had just uncovered.
VRMMMMM!
A massive section of the basalt wall ground open, revealing a fresh, dark corridor leading deeper into the ruins.
Adrian didn’t hesitate. "Move."
He and Nyren bolted into the passage without looking back.
Lothe followed closely behind them. But right before stepping across the threshold, he glanced back one final time at the circular testing chamber.
The room was repairing itself.
The shattered stone floor was melting back together. The metal fragments were dissolving into the masonry. The ice vapor evaporated into thin air. Within three seconds, not a single trace of the brutal battles remained.
No corpses. No structural damage. Not a single grain of dust out of place.
Lothe stared at the immaculate, empty chamber, his expression solemn.
"So that’s what you are..."
His eyes gleamed with cold, calculated clarity.
"An adaptive intelligence."
He turned on his heel and plunged into the dark corridor after the others.
But a single, heavy question remained suspended in his mind—a question far more dangerous than any trial the palace could invent:
If the palace is learning from us... what is it planning to build with what it learns?
