Apocalypse Online: I Awaken the Ultimate Bloodline
Chapter 127: The Adaptive Palace
Chapter 127: The Adaptive Palace
"What is that?"
Nyren asked, her black eyes locking onto the dark ceiling.
The continuous, low-frequency vibration rippling through the stone walls had forced all three of them to halt their advance.
Adrian’s jaw tightened, his metallic Qi humming instinctively beneath his skin. For a fraction of a second, they all entertained the same grim thought:
Another trial? Another mechanical trap? Another mutated beast?
Only Lothe remained silent.
His dark eyes narrowed. The resonant hum wasn’t originating from behind them. It wasn’t echoing from the chambers they had just cleared.
It was coming from ahead.
From their immediate destination—Sector Three.
After several agonizing moments, the rumbling abruptly cut off.
Adrian frowned, wiping a drop of sweat from his temple. "What the hell is this damn place cooking now?"
Absolute silence rushed back into the corridor. And in a subterranean labyrinth designed for slaughter, silence was infinitely more unsettling than noise.
Lothe couldn’t shake the cold crawling sensation along his spine.
He had every right to be paranoid. Ever since his breakthrough to Level 5, Tier 3—though his enhanced Veiled Identity Talisman successfully masked his true aura as an ordinary early-stage scholar—the Ancient Palace’s underlying structure had begun behaving erratically.
As if the automated architecture was actively registering his presence as an anomaly.
THUMP.
The corridor beneath their boots shuddered.
"What—what is that?" Adrian snarled, throwing his arms out as a dense shroud of razor-sharp Metal Qi flared around his forearms.
Nyren whipped her body around, her fingers instantly frosting over as she materialized her crystal sword, prepared to meet whatever monstrosity the palace hurled at them next.
Lothe didn’t move a muscle.
Instead, he silently pushed his [Spatial Perception] out into the stone walls, mapping the geometry of the surrounding corridors. At the same time, he flicked his vision into [Qi Sight].
The vibrant tapestry of energy flowing through the subterranean veins shifted before his eyes.
Earlier, all surrounding Qi conduits were blindly converging toward Sector Three.
But now, a portion of those energy lines had violently reversed course. They were curving backward... flowing directly toward him.
Lothe’s expression darkened. What are you planning?
He raised his right hand and pressed his palm flat against the cold basalt wall. The stone felt unnervingly smooth, vibrating with a dull, organic pulse—almost like a living heart pressed against his skin.
The palace is adjusting its internal layout...
His eyes narrowed to razor-thin slits.
...adjusting to me.
Adrian caught the movement out of the corner of his eye, his tone sharp. "Did you find something, scholar?"
Lothe calmly withdrew his hand, his face a mask of mild, scholarly confusion. "Nothing. The stone is just... unusually cold."
Adrian didn’t pry further. But Nyren lingered, her cold eyes studying the side of Lothe’s face for another heartbeat before she turned back toward the path.
Even with the talisman masking my core, Lothe thought, his mind racing, the palace’s sensory arrays have recognized that a foreign variable is disrupting its mechanics.
KRRRKKK!
Without warning, the corridor screeched.
Both ends of the stone tunnel slammed shut with deafening metallic thuds.
The basalt flagstones beneath their boots shifted violently. The walls groaned as they twisted on hidden axes, and overhead, sections of the ceiling slid like puzzle pieces into entirely new alignments.
The entire architectural grid of the sector was rearranging itself in real-time.
"It’s changing the route," Lothe stated flatly, raising his voice over the grinding stone.
Adrian scanned the rapidly closing walls, his teeth gritted. "Why? Where does this lead?"
"Obviously," Lothe replied, his tone chillingly level, "it doesn’t want us to reach Sector Three."
He paused, his dark eyes reflecting the sliding shadows. "At least... not through a predictable path."
A heavy chill settled over them.
Nyren’s expression turned lethal. Multiple routes.
If true, it shattered their previous assumption. The Ancient Palace wasn’t a linear structure where Sector One funneled into Sector Two, which in turn led to Sector Three.
It was a dynamic maze. And it was actively curating their routes based on who—or what—was walking through them.
Damn it, Lothe cursed internally. Why didn’t I factor this in sooner?
If the palace operated on a fixed, automated sequence, then everyone entering from the main gate should have traversed identical coordinates. But they hadn’t. From the moment they stepped inside, teams had been fractured, coordinates scrambled, and individuals isolated into tailored sectors.
He had underestimated the scale of the architecture. The palace wasn’t merely built of stone and runes; its internal geography was entirely plastic.
Lothe’s eyes flashed with fierce analytical light. Fascinating.
WHOOSH!
The twisting corridor abruptly expanded, the crushing walls vanishing into a vast expanse.
The three of them stumbled forward, finding themselves standing inside a colossal, circular testing amphitheater.
At the far perimeter stood three massive stone doors.
Each door radiated a distinct, suffocating elemental Qi signature:
The left door pulsed with dense, unyielding Metal Qi.
The center door bled bone-chilling Ice Qi.
The right door hummed with an invisible, distorting wave of Void Qi.
Instinctively, Adrian’s gaze snapped toward the Metal door.
Nyren’s eyes locked onto the Ice door.
Lothe stepped forward, his dark gaze fixing entirely upon the Void door.
KRRR...
All three heavy stone doors groaned open simultaneously.
They weren’t beasts. They weren’t ordinary mindless automatons.
They stepped out with the heavy, calculated gravity of true Palace Guardians.
The Metal Guardian strode out before Adrian, its entire multi-ton frame encased in jagged, regenerative plates of shimmering steel.
The Ice Guardian materialized before Nyren, a blinding blizzard of crystalline frost swirling outward from its heavy boots.
Then, Lothe turned his attention toward the third entrance—the Void door.
Nothing.
No heavy footsteps. No shifting shadows.
No construct, beast, or guardian emerged from the threshold.
The interior remained pitch-black and empty.
Lothe frowned, his brow furrowing deeply.
Then—
BAM!
The Void door slammed shut on its own accord, sealing itself tight.
"It’s... empty?" Nyren murmured, her head snapping toward Lothe. Her eyes narrowed with deep suspicion. She had distrusted this "ordinary scholar" from the moment they crossed paths; this anomalous event only deepened her vigilance. "Why didn’t anything come out for you?"
Lothe answered with absolute calm. "I don’t know."
And for once... he genuinely didn’t.
The palace recognizes my Qi signature.
It knows my mastery over spatial principles and Void energy.
So why didn’t it spawn a guardian for me?
His gaze darted to Adrian’s metallic opponent, then to Nyren’s frost-covered combatant.
Unless...
Lothe’s eyes constricted.
It doesn’t possess a corresponding baseline to counter my specific path.
A faint, dangerous smirk curled at the corner of his lips. This didn’t simplify his situation; it made it infinitely more interesting.
The Metal Guardian didn’t waste time.
BOOM!
It launched its massive frame forward like a charging rhino.
Adrian didn’t retreat an inch. His hand swept toward the modular belt at his waist. With a series of sharp clicks, three metallic spheres detached themselves into his palm.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
The spheres expanded mid-air through intricate mechanical folding.
Click! Click! Click!
They transformed:
The first blossomed into a pair of razor-edged, high-speed spinning discs.
The second split into a trio of floating, weighted daggers.
The third unfurled into a heavy, convex kinetic shield.
Adrian’s eyes gleamed with battle-hardened focus. "Let’s see what your metal is made of."
The Metal Guardian swung its massive, hammer-like fist downward.
