Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 617 - 607: Zombies 2
Moira Lynch looked at the group and saw that many of them were injured. A few were hurt so badly they couldn’t even walk and had to remain in their vehicles.
Without treatment, it was only a matter of time before they would be abandoned—not to mention they also faced the risk of infection and attacks from zombies.
"You have medicine?" one of them asked.
Moira Lynch shook her head. "Nope, I don’t need any."
She simply extended a finger, and a ball of white light shot from its tip, landing on the person nearest to her.
As the white light sank into them, the person’s wounds slowly healed right before everyone’s eyes, eventually vanishing completely.
Everyone stared in shock. "You have... a Healing Ability!"
’A superpower?’
’So these people really do call talents superpowers.’
Earlier, while she was following them, Moira had seen someone in the crowd make water spurt from their fingertips. That was why she decided to reveal her Healing Talent.
’As for why she chose to reveal a Healing Talent? That’s because Healing Talents are the most valuable, of course.’
’Besides, by healing people, she could collect a large number of Zombie Crystal Cores. That’s much faster than hunting zombies herself.’
Under Moira Lynch’s care, the team’s injured members quickly made a full recovery. Just as she’d planned, she joined their ranks with ease.
The zombie outbreak had been going on for some time, and some survivors had awakened various superpowers. Of these, the Healing Ability was the rarest.
If a team had a Superpower User with a Healing Ability, its survival rate during missions would increase dramatically.
For this very reason, upon learning that Moira Lynch was on her own, the team captain, James Shaw, didn’t hesitate to invite her to join them.
Moira Lynch, of course, gladly accepted.
When she learned they were out on a mission, Moira Lynch asked curiously, "What kind of mission?"
"To clear out the zombies in this direction and prevent a massive siege. The survivor base issues missions like this every few days."
"The pay for these cleanup missions is high, but they’re dangerous, of course. For instance, this time we ran into a zombie that had awakened a Speed Ability. We were nearly wiped out."
In truth, even though they had been heading back toward the base, they were well aware that their wounds meant they would likely turn into zombies.
Under those circumstances, they wouldn’t have been allowed inside the base.
Not unless they could last forty-eight hours in the quarantine zone.
Normally, the zombie virus has an incubation period of twenty-four hours. However, some strains can lie dormant for as long as thirty-six or even forty-eight hours.
The conditions in the quarantine zone were terrible, though. Some people who went in didn’t turn into zombies but died from infected wounds instead.
In light of all this, Moira Lynch’s appearance was like an Angel sent from heaven to save them from their desperate plight.
Later on the road, when it was time to eat, Moira Lynch subconsciously reached for her Space Button to get some food, but she stopped herself just in time.
’That was close. I almost exposed it.’
It was only then that Moira Lynch realized she hadn’t prepared any visible luggage. She’d been too focused on the journey to think of it.
Seeing the others begin to eat, Moira Lynch pretended to reach into her pocket, but in reality, she pulled a cookie from her Space Button and began to nibble on it slowly.
Seeing this, James Shaw came over and invited Moira Lynch to eat with them. They didn’t have much food, but it was certainly better than a dry cookie.
The group was eating a proper meal while Moira Lynch silently nibbled her cookie off to the side. It was a rather pitiful sight.
If she were just an ordinary person, it would have been one thing. Food was precious these days, and they had all learned to cast aside such kindness long ago. But Moira Lynch was no ordinary person—she was their savior.
The person who just saved your lives is left without a proper meal? No matter how you spun it, they would be in the wrong.
So when James Shaw came over with a compressed biscuit, Moira Lynch accepted it with a smile.
"By the way, how come you’re all alone? What about your family?" James Shaw asked.
Moira Lynch had a healthy complexion and her clothes were spotless—she didn’t look like someone who had endured much hardship.
At his words, the light in Moira Lynch’s eyes dimmed. "I got separated from them... I saw people in the distance and thought it might be my family, so I came to take a look."
Seeing her expression, James Shaw thought he had touched a sore spot and looked a little flustered.
He knew better than anyone what getting separated from family meant in these times. The chances of Moira Lynch ever finding them again were minuscule.
"Don’t be sad. You have a valuable Healing Ability. When we get back to the base, I’ll tell the base commander about you. I’m sure he’ll make proper arrangements for you."
"With your talent, you won’t have to worry about food or shelter."
After all, their entire base only had five Superpower Users with a Healing Ability.
Moira Lynch nodded, putting on a comforted expression.
The two chatted for a while longer. There were some things Moira Lynch didn’t dare ask about too directly, for fear of arousing James Shaw’s suspicion.
When James Shaw learned that Moira Lynch was collecting Crystal Cores, he kindly warned her, "You’d better not absorb those Crystal Cores recklessly."
"Why not?" Moira Lynch asked, her curiosity piqued.
James Shaw didn’t hold back. "Absorbing these Crystal Cores can raise a Superpower User’s level, but since they’re dug out of zombie brains, they contain the zombie virus."
"Experts have discovered that Superpower Users have a certain amount of antibodies to the zombie virus, which allows them to absorb Crystal Cores. But you have to do it in moderation. Otherwise, it puts a strain on your body and can cause drastic personality changes."
Moira Lynch nodded. That certainly seemed possible. ’So,’ she thought, ’why can’t *I* absorb them?’
Sensing her question, James Shaw continued, "Superpower Users with a Healing Ability aren’t affected in the same way, but absorbing Crystal Cores will affect their superpower itself."
"The most powerful healer our base used to have became obsessed with absorbing Crystal Cores. As a result, his superpower mutated from a Healing Ability into a Poison Ability."
A look of regret crossed James Shaw’s face as he spoke of it.
A Poison Ability might sound powerful, but it’s nothing compared to a Healing Ability.
Especially since his mutation was externally induced. It was distinctly different from a natural Poison Ability—after all, a natural one doesn’t turn on its user.
After hearing James Shaw’s explanation, Moira Lynch smiled. "Thanks for the warning. I won’t absorb them carelessly."
