Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 605 - 595: Sound Source Pollution 47
As someone who also possessed a Space Talent, no one knew better than her just how difficult those with Space Talents could be to deal with.
However, Space Talent also had many different branches. She just didn’t know which category the mayor’s talent fell into.
For example, Moira Lynch’s own Space Talent leaned more toward the Space Movement type.
Just as the group was engaged in a cordial and friendly—yet ultimately pointless—conversation (which was really just the mayor unilaterally flattering them and making grand, empty promises), a sudden knock came from the reception room door.
Immediately after, a woman walked in. She wore a suit, had short hair, and wore glasses, exuding an air of sharp competence and a powerful presence.
The woman’s gaze first swept around the reception room before finally landing on Moira Lynch and her companions.
A friendly smile appeared on her stern face.
"You must be the heroes who dealt with the infected at the assignment hall yesterday. A pleasure to finally meet you."
The woman walked over and plopped down right in the mayor’s seat, forcing him to move aside.
And the mayor’s reaction was quite intriguing.
As the mayor of Novus, he should have been the city’s top leader. In these turbulent times with an unknown future, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call him a local despot.
Yet, when faced with such disrespectful behavior, this mayor showed only forbearance.
Moreover, Moira Lynch also sensed the woman’s hostility and disdain for the mayor. She might not have shown it on her face—facial expressions could be hidden—but her truest inner feelings couldn’t be concealed.
’This is interesting.’
’Are these two rivals?’
In the moments that followed, Moira Lynch and her companions truly understood the meaning of toe-curling awkwardness.
The woman’s flattery was so over-the-top it felt like a lethal dose of sugar—utterly sickening.
They wanted to interrupt her but couldn’t. After all, you don’t slap a smiling face. Barring any surprises, they would have to get by on her territory for the time being.
Perhaps noticing the looks on their faces, the woman finally reined in her endless stream of praise. "Oh, right, I haven’t even introduced myself. I’m Hayes, the deputy mayor of Novus."
The thing was, Moira and her companions already knew who this person was.
While Deputy Mayor Hayes was rambling on, Moira Lynch, with nothing better to do, had explored the entire place inside and out and had shared the information she gathered with her two companions.
Deputy Mayor Hayes glanced at the time and said with surprise, "Wow, it’s already almost noon. Why don’t we continue this over a meal? I have something very important to discuss with you, and I hope you’ll agree to it."
’What!!’
’Still talking!!’
Hearing this, the mayor standing to the side visibly lost his composure. ’Deputy Mayor Hayes, they’re my guests. Isn’t it a bit inappropriate for you to overstep your bounds like this?’
Deputy Mayor Hayes shot the mayor a look and said, "Do you see the times we’re in? And the mayor is still haggling over such trivial matters. How petty."
Witnessing this scene, the three of them exchanged glances. Had they been dragged into some bizarre political vortex?
Deputy Mayor Hayes had clearly come prepared; even the restaurant was ready.
After they were seated.
Deputy Mayor Hayes was the first to stand up. Raising her wine glass to the three of them, she said, "I heard that not only did you take care of yesterday’s infected, but you also invented the Meditation Method. On behalf of all the survivors, I’d like to toast the three of you."
Seeing the wine glasses on the table, none of the three made a move.
"Um, Deputy Mayor, the three of us... well, we’re all severely allergic to alcohol. Simple contact is fine, but if we drink it, it could be fatal."
Upon hearing this, the expression on Deputy Mayor Hayes’s face grew a little awkward, but she quickly concealed it.
"Oh, is that so? Then never mind. If you can’t have wine, let’s have some other drinks then."
Several other types of drinks were brought out next, but Moira Lynch turned them all down with the excuse of an allergy.
After Moira Lynch inquired about the ingredients of yet another drink and once again claimed they were allergic, Deputy Mayor Hayes couldn’t sit still any longer.
"You’re allergic to quite a lot of things."
Moira Lynch nodded, a troubled look on her face as she said, "It’s been like this since we were kids. We have to be careful with everything we eat; we take allergy medicine more often than we have meals. And for some reason, even though the three of us are allergic to different things, whenever we’re in close proximity, our allergies all become shared."
Hearing of such a thing for the first time, Deputy Mayor Hayes was stunned. She had never imagined such an allergy could exist.
But she had no way of verifying if it was true. She couldn’t very well ask them to demonstrate on the spot.
After all, Moira Lynch had made it clear that eating these things could kill them. She still wanted to win them over, so she couldn’t afford to offend them completely.
The meal was tasteless and dull, and Deputy Mayor Hayes even forgot her original plan.
As they were leaving, the mayor personally saw them out.
"I’m very sorry about what happened today. Deputy Mayor Hayes is still young and has only been in her post for a month. By the way, she was probably planning to invite you to join her Paragon Squad today. If you can, I hope you’ll refuse her."
Hearing the mayor say this, Moira Lynch asked curiously, "Why should we refuse? Is there something wrong with the Paragon Squad?"
’After all, who doesn’t dream of being a hero?’
Especially in chaotic times like these, people need heroes to be their source of hope.
Take Moira Lynch herself, for example.
Although she herself didn’t feel it, to the rest of Caelus, she was the source of hope for all of Caelus.
"Heroes are a good thing, of course, but Deputy Mayor Hayes’s reason for forming this Paragon Squad is not so pure. She wants to create a god. So, for those who join this squad, the final outcome is either becoming a god or becoming cannon fodder."
"With the strength you displayed yesterday, you deserve a much wider world, not to be trapped so early in a shell called ’god’."
The mayor had a look of awe-inspiring righteousness on his face, as if he were truly thinking of their best interests.
A faint smile played on Moira Lynch’s lips as she said, "Thank you for the warning, Mr. Mayor. We will refuse the deputy mayor."
The mayor smiled upon hearing her answer.
"By the way, have you heard of The Thunderer?" the mayor asked suddenly.
’The Thunderer?’
Moira Lynch thought of the post she had seen earlier and nodded. "I’ve heard some things, but not much."
"It seems The Thunderer awakened an incredibly powerful Talent but lost control. Before you arrived, I received a document from the capital, ordering every region to dispatch their strongest Talents to capture The Thunderer.
"I had already selected my people, but now, I want to add you to the roster as well."
