Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 601 - 591: Sound Source Pollution 43
Upon hearing this, Moira Lynch looked up at Kai York, her expression seeming to say, ’Are you kidding me? I’m already in this state, and you still want me to stand watch?’
By nightfall, after a long day on the road, most people had fallen into a deep sleep. A small number, however, were still shaken by the day’s events and remained wide awake.
Inside an SUV, Moira Lynch sat in the passenger seat with her eyes closed, seemingly fast asleep.
After reaching an agreement to cooperate, Professor Wallace had offered them a tent to live in, but they had turned it down.
For one, doing so would attract too much unwanted attention.
After all, they already stood out enough. If they had their own separate tent, it would be difficult for others not to notice them, and even more difficult for them not to grow suspicious of their identities.
Besides, they felt it was fine to stay here. Although the space was small, it was secure—far more secure than a tent.
In the middle of the night, Moira Lynch was suddenly woken by Kai York.
She shot him a questioning look.
Kai York whispered, "I feel a slight fluctuation in the air. It seems like something is approaching quickly. Can you use your spiritual power to check it out?"
At his words, Moira Lynch nodded, extending her spiritual power to its maximum range to investigate.
As the two were speaking, Hugh Finch woke up as well. He sat up and asked, "What’s happening?" He had only just fallen asleep a short while ago.
"Something’s approaching. I’m having Moira check out the specifics."
A moment later, Moira Lynch’s expression grew serious. "There’s definitely something heading our way, and it’s moving fast. It’s huge, and..."
She trailed off, her expression difficult to put into words.
Seeing this, Kai York pressed, "And what? Spit it out."
"And... its movements are incredibly strange, and so is its shape."
"What do you mean?" Hugh Finch asked.
"Well..."
For a moment, Moira Lynch didn’t know how to describe what it looked like.
"It’s... X-shaped, like the lower halves of two people who were cut in half at the waist, fused together. It’s tumbling towards us... and it’s singing."
Moira didn’t even need to mention the singing. With their enhanced hearing, the others could already faintly make out a melodious, ethereal song drifting from the distance.
The song was as beautiful as it was bizarre, sending a chill down their spines.
As the creature drew nearer, both Moira Lynch and Kai York attempted to interfere, trying to make it change direction or turn back the way it came.
But their efforts were all in vain.
The damn thing was heading straight for them as if it had a tracking device.
Neither Kai York’s winds attempting to force it off course nor Moira Lynch’s use of Instant Teleportation had any effect.
Finally, Moira Lynch took a deep breath, steeling herself. "I’ll go take care of it," she said.
Hearing this, Hugh Finch and Kai York’s immediate reaction was to stop her.
"You just used Instant Teleportation several times and wasted a lot of energy. How many more times can you even do that? What if you’re in danger? And besides, Destruction..."
Destruction was a double-edged sword.
"Let me go instead. I have the Gun of Destruction," Hugh Finch said.
"I’ll go," Kai York chimed in. "Hugh, give me the Gun of Destruction. I can fly, so I can get there and back quickly."
Seeing the two men vying to deal with the approaching monster, Moira Lynch held up a hand to stop them. "No, I’ll go," she said. "I can handle it without using Destruction. I have a secret weapon."
With that, Moira Lynch gave a mysterious smile, tapped the Beret on her head, and vanished on the spot.
’And to think I thought I’d never get to use this item.’
She reappeared several hundred meters away from the group. By now, the monster was extremely close to their camp.
Only now did Moira Lynch get a clear look at the monster’s true form. It was, without a doubt, a giant "X".
On closer inspection, she saw that the "X" was actually formed from the bodies of countless other monsters fused together.
The hauntingly beautiful song ebbed and flowed around her. Faintly, Moira Lynch thought she could see a paradise, an idyllic world that tugged at her soul.
Just then, a sharp pain shot through Moira’s head. The illusion vanished, and she was instantly pulled back to reality.
Staring at the monster getting closer, a wave of fear washed over her. ’That was too close.’
She reached into her coat pocket, rummaged around for a moment, and pulled out a perfectly plump orange.
"Go, eat it!"
Moira Lynch tossed the "Super delicious orange" toward the monster.
As the orange left her hand, it tumbled through the air, and the once normal-sized fruit rapidly began to swell.
Then, before Moira Lynch’s astonished eyes, it actually devoured the monster.
’No way, it actually ate it!’
Even though she had expected something like this, Moira was still stunned to see it happen.
The shock didn’t last long, however, as a feeling of immense fullness suddenly flooded her stomach.
It felt like being force-fed when you were already stuffed, like food was piled all the way up to her throat.
"BLEGH—"
Moira Lynch couldn’t stop herself from dry-heaving, but nothing came up.
She rubbed her queasy stomach, feeling absolutely miserable.
And when the orange returned, she was surprised to see it had grown to the size of a pomelo.
Immediately after, a stream of information flooded into Moira Lynch’s mind.
[Super delicious orange: A conceptual-grade item. As long as its owner believes without a doubt, it can devour anything, feeding back an equal amount of energy to its master.
Friendly Reminder: Don’t get greedy, and be careful not to burst!]
Reading the information in her mind, Moira Lynch fell into a stunned silence.
’So that’s why I felt so full just now.’
Fortunately, the feeling didn’t last long, as the energy was quickly absorbed into her body.
Perhaps because she possessed three talents, the energy Moira Lynch required to achieve a breakthrough was triple that of an ordinary person.
This was something she had only just realized.
It was quite depressing.
After all, when she had awakened her previous talents, they had influenced each other, allowing her to level up extremely quickly.
She didn’t even have to train them separately for all three talents to reach the same level.
Although she felt frustrated, what was done was done. Since she couldn’t change the reality of the situation, she could only accept it.
’So, my training has been so difficult lately because I just have too many talents?’
Moira Lynch suddenly had an epiphany.
She had always trained all three of her talents simultaneously, assuming that was normal and that everyone did the same.
So she had been wrong. Training three talents at once had spread her focus too thin, which was why she had been stuck at level four for so long, unable to advance.
