Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 364 - 354: Playing a Game NPC 2
Just as Moira Lynch was thinking, the Light Screen in front of her suddenly flickered to life. At the same time, the system’s voice sounded again.
[*Divine Soul* is a game that integrates multiple modes such as adventure, combat, exploration, farming, and character development, offering a one-hundred-percent immersive experience. It is also one of the most popular games in the galaxy. Players can experience the life they desire according to their own preferences.
However, due to unknown reasons, a large number of NPC staff have suddenly resigned. To quickly fill these vacancies, the game’s officials have specially hired you to temporarily take over the positions of game NPCs.
The duration of this job is three days.
During these three days, please do your best to conscientiously play the roles of your assigned NPCs.]
As the system’s message faded, Moira Lynch finally turned her attention to the Light Screen in front of her.
The Light Screen now displayed the NPC she was supposed to play.
At first, Moira Lynch thought it would be a very simple task. After all, it was just playing an NPC.
’These days, who hasn’t played a game before? The NPCs inside all have fixed lines.’
But when Moira Lynch took a closer look, she realized she wasn’t going to be playing just one NPC, but several at the same time.
"One, two, three, four... five!?"
After carefully reviewing the information for these NPCs again, the good news was that she wouldn’t have to play them all at the same time.
This made Moira Lynch breathe a sigh of relief.
’If I had to play five characters at once, I’d probably end up with schizophrenia.’
Moira Lynch first looked at the first two characters. These were the NPCs she needed to play on the first day: the village chief’s daughter and a mysterious woman at the village entrance named Azure.
After reading through the profiles for these two characters, Moira Lynch decided to play the village chief’s daughter first.
With a thought, Moira Lynch’s figure vanished from her spot. When she reappeared, she was in a small courtyard enclosed by a wicker fence.
Before Moira Lynch could even get used to her new identity, she heard a burst of crying next to her. Immediately after, a pair of arms wrapped around her in a tight hug.
"Oh, my poor old man! If something really happened to you, how could I go on living? Daughter, you must find a way to bring your father back!"
Moira Lynch felt herself tightly constricted by a pair of strong arms, making it difficult to breathe.
Just as she felt like she was about to suffocate, Moira Lynch managed to say with difficulty, "Can you let me go first? The game hasn’t started yet."
As soon as she spoke, the crying in her ear stopped abruptly, and the arms holding her suddenly loosened their grip.
Moira Lynch’s body involuntarily fell to the ground, and she gasped for fresh air.
A gruff voice sounded in her ear, "The game hasn’t started yet? Damn, I wasted so much eye drops for nothing."
Hearing the voice, Moira Lynch’s eyes widened in shock. She looked at the old woman who had just been hugging her. That voice was... a man’s!
Seeing Moira Lynch still on the ground, the person reached out and pulled her up, saying apologetically, "Sorry about that, friend. It’s my first day on the job, I didn’t control my strength well."
Hearing this, Moira Lynch waved her hand. "It’s fine, I get it. Just, maybe you could be a little gentler when the game starts."
The other person agreed without hesitation.
With a few minutes still to go before the game started, Moira Lynch quickly got acquainted with the staff member playing the village chief’s wife—her "mother" for the game.
"By the way, how long do we have to work here?" Moira Lynch asked.
"You didn’t find out before you came?" the village chief’s wife asked, a look of surprise on his face.
Moira Lynch scratched her head in embarrassment. "I just saw that the pay was good and came without thinking it through."
"Oh, so that’s how it is. Still, you should find out the details beforehand for things like this in the future. You were lucky this time. If your luck was bad, you could’ve been sold off without even knowing it."
"The game *Divine Soul* is usually open 24/7, except during upgrades and maintenance. But we staff members playing NPCs don’t have to be on duty around the clock. At night, another group of staff will come to take over for us."
After listening to the village chief’s wife, Moira Lynch asked again, "So when does the shift change happen?"
"8 PM. Then we come back to take over at 8 AM the next morning."
’Got it. Twelve on, twelve off.’
The work hours gave Moira Lynch a strange sense of familiarity.
’It was just like the summer jobs I worked in factories during school breaks.’
’But the village chief’s daughter just has to give out a quest. That’s way easier than working in a factory.’
But soon, Moira Lynch would realize she was wrong. Being an NPC wasn’t so easy after all.
With the *Divine Soul* upgrade complete, a massive number of players flooded into the game.
Every time *Divine Soul* completed an update, a large number of new quests would be generated. So, after entering the game, these players began searching everywhere for quests.
The first place these people went was the village chief’s house.
"The village chief isn’t home?"
"Why are there two new NPCs here?"
When the players saw the words "Village Chief’s Daughter" and "Village Chief’s Wife" displayed above the heads of Moira Lynch and the other person, they decided to split up and try talking to them.
In the game before, the village chief didn’t have a wife, let alone a daughter. Now that two new NPCs had suddenly appeared, there was definitely a quest here.
But before any of them could step forward to ask, the village chief’s wife started wailing.
The earth-shattering wail startled the players who had come looking for quests.
If this weren’t the village chief’s house, everyone would have thought the village chief’s wife was a newly spawned boss, ready to go Berserk and transform at any moment.
However, from the village chief’s wife’s wails, the players learned that the village chief was missing.
At this point, the task of the village chief’s wife was complete.
The task of the village chief’s wife was to inform the players of the chief’s disappearance, and then it was up to Moira Lynch, as the village chief’s daughter, to issue the quest.
She helped her colleague—the village chief’s wife and her "mother"—into the house. Then, she took out a handkerchief doused in chili water from her robes, dabbed the corners of her eyes, and tears instantly welled up.
Moira Lynch was already quite attractive, so now, seeing a beauty in tears, the players present were instantly filled with pity.
[Esteemed heroes, my father went into the mountains some time ago to gather herbs and has not been heard from since. My mother washes her face with tears every day. I beg you, brave heroes, to help me find my father and bring him back safely. You will be handsomely rewarded afterward!]
After saying the last word, Moira Lynch breathed an inward sigh of relief.
’I finally finished reciting it. This is my first time acting, so it’d be a lie to say I wasn’t nervous.’
At the same time, a "Quest Accepted" interface appeared in front of all the players.
[The Village Chief’s Daughter’s Request: Bring back the missing village chief. Reward: a healing item personally crafted by the village chief’s daughter!
PS: This is a unique quest. Once someone completes it, the quest will automatically disappear.]
