Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 316 - 306: Roast Whole Lamb
"Judging by the size of these footprints, they look like they were left by some kind of beast," said Hugh Finch.
Moira Lynch, on the other hand, had Patience scan the footprint, but it also came up with no results.
In other words, this was very likely a new species.
"I’ll go report this to the base," said Shane Rhodes.
After all, signs of a suspected beast inside the base was not a good thing.
With that, Shane Rhodes headed outside, leaving the others to continue clearing the snow from the yard.
Moira Lynch was working hard with a tool in hand when, all of a sudden, she was struck by an intense craving for a whole roasted lamb.
No sooner said than done. On a day this cold, eating a fragrant, piping-hot whole roasted lamb—there was nothing better in the world.
"Patience, how much lamb is left in the space?"
"Half a warehouse’s worth is still left."
Patience replied truthfully.
Moira Lynch had brought a lot of canned meat out of the game this time.
Since they were all nearing their expiration dates, her focus these past few days had been on selling the canned meat.
Thanks to the affordable price, they were a huge hit with her customers.
A single can, if eaten sparingly, was enough to last a person for several days.
Moira Lynch thought for a moment and decided to temporarily list a batch of lamb in her shop.
’This was the downside of hiding her identity. She needed an excuse just to eat what she wanted.’
’Still, if she had to choose all over again, she would still hide her identity.’
Patience quickly took care of arranging the lamb sale.
Seeing that it was done, Moira Lynch called out to the two people shoveling snow nearby, "Let’s get a whole roasted lamb after we finish with the snow."
"A whole roasted lamb!!"
Hearing those four words, Kai York’s eyes instantly lit up.
He didn’t doubt for a second that Moira Lynch was just talking.
Knowing Moira Lynch, if she said something like that, it meant she had already taken care of the most important part: the lamb itself.
"Did the SoySauceDrunkard shop just list something new?" asked Hugh Finch.
He didn’t have to think twice. At a time like this, besides the government, large organizations, and the super-rich, only SoySauceDrunkard could possibly produce a whole lamb for roasting.
With the promise of a whole roasted lamb dangling before them, the group’s pace quickened considerably.
Once they had cleared all the snow from the yard, Moira Lynch brought out the whole lamb.
The villa already had all the equipment needed to roast a whole lamb.
Now, only one last problem remained.
"Where are we going to roast it? Outside?"
That would be a little too conspicuous.
Although no one living in Sector A was short on food or drink, roasting a whole lamb out in the open in their yard would look like they were deliberately flaunting their wealth.
"Let’s do it in one of the rooms," Moira Lynch suggested.
"Roasting a whole lamb inside? What if it starts a fire?"
They had only done some minor cooking in the fireplace before. A real fire would be no laughing matter.
Damage to the house was one thing, but they would end up homeless on the streets.
"If I’d known, I would’ve made the fireplace bigger," Kai York sighed.
Hindsight is always 20/20.
Moira Lynch thought for a moment and said, "We can move all the extra furniture from one of the rooms upstairs. Then we can lay down a protective layer to keep the floor from getting burned. As long as we make sure there’s good ventilation, it should be fine."
In the end, Kai York and Hugh Finch couldn’t resist the temptation of roasted lamb. They agreed to this plan, which seemed dangerous and was, in fact, not the least bit safe.
This was only possible because it was the post-apocalyptic ice age. Otherwise, a stunt like this would be enough to get them all thrown in jail, and maybe even make the news.
And so, Kai York and Hugh Finch handled the initial preparations, while Moira Lynch took on the task of marinating the lamb.
At the same time, Kai York and Hugh Finch got to see Moira Lynch’s portable kitchen for the first time.
Watching the small box transform into a fully-equipped kitchen in the blink of an eye, Kai York’s jaw dropped in shock.
"Moira, don’t tell me this is another item you got from the game?"
"This probably doesn’t count as an item," Moira Lynch said after a moment’s thought.
"If it’s not an item, what is it?" Hugh Finch asked, confused.
"Kitchenware. I think it was made by some interstellar corporation," Moira Lynch explained.
「One hour later.」
When a travel-worn Shane Rhodes returned, he found the house completely transformed.
Aside from their few beanbag chairs, all the other furniture had vanished.
The main door was shut tight, but the windows were open. ’Was this... a burglary?’
’But on second thought, that seemed impossible. After all, what kind of thief specifically steals furniture these days?’
He looked around. Besides the missing furniture, many new things had appeared in the living room.
There was some cement and bricks, and something that looked like a small house.
Just as he was about to get a closer look, Moira Lynch emerged from it, carrying the marinated whole lamb with one hand.
Trailing behind her were Kai York and Hugh Finch, who wanted to help but had no idea where to start.
"What are you all doing?"
’He’d only been gone for a little while. What kind of stunt were they pulling now?’
Hearing the voice, Kai York turned and saw Shane Rhodes standing at the door. He quickly waved him over. "Boss, quick, come help! We’re having a whole roasted lamb today."
"A whole roasted lamb?"
Shane Rhodes’s brain hadn’t caught up yet, but his body had already moved forward to help.
"So, this is your reason for turning the house into... this?"
"We couldn’t just roast it in the yard," said Kai York. "What if the neighbors saw? Then would we have to share it or not?"
If they didn’t share, it would feel strange to eat while others watched; their consciences wouldn’t be able to take it.
But if they shared with one neighbor, there would be a second, then a third, a fourth...
They didn’t want to get roped into a thankless task like that.
So, the only option was to hide inside the house and eat in secret.
Shane Rhodes seemed to be convinced by this reasoning.
After Moira Lynch and the others finished their prep work, they left the actual roasting to a robot.
Throughout the process, Kai York constantly used his ability to create gusts of wind, channeling all the smoke out of the room.
That day, the aroma of roasted lamb filled the entirety of Sector A, and even drifted over to the nearby Sector B.
Many people came outside, and as they sniffed the tantalizing scent of roasting lamb in the air, they couldn’t help but gulp.
Meanwhile, back with Moira Lynch and her friends.
A bonfire blazed in the very center of the living room floor, making the entire room warm and toasty.
Over the fire, a whole lamb turned steadily on a spit, the air thick with the rich aroma of cumin.
Moira Lynch had even brought the largest sofa down from the second floor, placing it near the fire. Then, she found a movie to watch from her downloads.
The scene left Shane Rhodes and the others in a bit of a daze, as if they had traveled back to the time before the apocalypse.
