Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 296 - 286: Blind Box Match-Up 1
At the same time, a number appeared before all the players.
This number was the current count of surviving players.
Moira Lynch took a count. There were a full one million people.
That might sound like a lot, but compared to the billions of people on Caelus, one million was nothing.
’No wonder the game needs to increase the number of players.’
Just as Moira Lynch was marveling at this, the original number suddenly began to increase at an extremely rapid pace.
Soon, the number of players reached ten million.
Five minutes later, the rate of increase finally began to slow down.
At that moment, the voice of the game system sounded again.
[Welcome, new players.
To reiterate, this is a support game. The game now begins.
On the planet Tarmir, the native Tarmirians are obsessed with all things mysterious and exciting. Therefore, Tarmir is the largest producer of mystery boxes, which are beloved throughout the galaxy.
The annual interstellar shopping festival is fast approaching. A massive influx of mystery box orders has become a huge headache for the Tarmirians on Tarmir, forcing them to hire a group of people to help them pack the orders.
Good luck, temp workers!]
As the game system’s final words faded, Moira Lynch’s vision went black. The next second, she found herself in a huge room.
Looking around, she saw that besides herself, the room was piled high with all sorts of goods. There was nothing else.
Moira Lynch looked at the various goods in the room and thought about the task the game system had just mentioned.
’Do they want me to pack up all the goods in here?’
Just then, Moira Lynch noticed a pile of white, paper-like sheets next to her.
A few words were written on top: [Mystery Box Packaging].
Moira Lynch tried picking up one of the sheets and saw that it indeed had some lines on it.
She folded it along the lines, and in just a moment, a white box appeared in her hands.
Moira Lynch looked at the plain, unremarkable white box.
’With mystery boxes, the most important thing is that no one can tell what’s inside. That’s what makes opening them a surprise. So the exteriors all have to look identical.’
At that moment, the game system’s voice sounded again.
[New task issued: Pack all goods in the room according to the mystery box regulations of Tarmir. The time limit is five days. Players who fail to complete the task within this time will lose their player status.]
After hearing the system’s task, Moira Lynch didn’t dare to delay for a second and immediately began working.
Moira Lynch first did a quick survey of the goods in the room. There were a lot of them, but they were all small items.
"Patience, what is this?"
Moira Lynch picked up a small black box. There were no words on it, only a symbol that looked like a cross.
Since it was a product meant to be sold, Moira Lynch didn’t open it.
[Infinity Earbuds. The hottest earbuds from three years ago. Back then, they were priceless and no one was selling. Now, they’re still priceless and no one is buying.]
Moira Lynch: ...
’When did Patience learn to be so sarcastic?’
’A bestseller from three years ago, though?’
’Are they sure this isn’t just unsold stock they’re packaging into mystery boxes?’
Moira Lynch had been scammed like this before.
In her past life, that is.
Merchants would advertise that you could get phones or tablets for a ridiculously cheap price, but when you bought one, all you’d get were some charging cables and earbuds. And you could tell from the material that they weren’t worth anything.
Sometimes, getting earbuds or a charging cable was a good outcome. More often than not, you’d just get a pile of trash.
They’d claim you could get items worth thousands of dollars from a box costing tens of dollars, or items worth tens of thousands from a box costing thousands.
And if you didn’t get anything good, they’d just say you were unlucky.
It was a classic ploy that preyed on people’s gambling instincts and desire to score a bargain.
So, after being burned once, Moira Lynch had always kept her distance from mystery boxes.
’With that kind of spare cash, you could buy almost anything else.’
Next, Moira Lynch picked up a few more items and asked Patience about them.
The results were all, without exception, bestsellers from a few years ago. That was actually one of the better outcomes, since they had at least been popular once.
Some of the other items were simply no-name, uncertified products.
Moira Lynch looked at her room, filled to the brim with goods. ’Whoever buys the mystery boxes I pack is in for some bad luck.’
Thoughts were just thoughts, however. Moira Lynch still got to work.
Life is tough; Moira sighed.
’Besides, gamblers don’t deserve any sympathy.’
Just putting things in a box—at first, Moira Lynch thought it would be incredibly simple.
But after she packed one mystery box and placed it at the shipping chute, the display read: REJECTED.
Staring at the returned mystery box, Moira Lynch fell silent. She looked it over but couldn’t figure out what the problem was.
So, she decided to try a few more times.
She tried more than ten times in a row, and every single one was returned without exception.
Just as Moira Lynch was frowning, trying to figure out what was wrong, a notification sound chimed in her ear.
She opened it and saw a message from Kai York in the group chat.
Ever since they got their Intelligent Brains, the four of them—Moira Lynch included—had added each other as friends and created a group chat to make communication easier.
[Kai York: Why do my packed mystery boxes keep getting rejected?]
That was the very question Moira Lynch wanted to ask.
So she stared at the screen, waiting to see how the other two would respond.
[Hugh Finch: They keep getting rejected because you’re missing an item. There’s a small hole next to the boxes. When you’re packing, just grab a handful of what’s inside and put it in the box. It won’t get rejected then.]
Seeing Hugh Finch’s reply, Moira Lynch immediately looked over to where the boxes were kept and, sure enough, saw a hole about the size of a basketball.
She reached her hand in and, just as he’d said, felt something that felt like paper.
When she pulled her hand out and saw what she was holding, Moira Lynch was dumbfounded. ’Isn’t this Raphia Grass?’
’So the boxes were being rejected this whole time because I forgot to add the Raphia Grass?’
"Patience, don’t tell me Starfarers are also into giving Raphia Grass as gifts?" Moira Lynch asked curiously.
[What Raphia Grass? This is Fangfei Silk. Different colors emit different scents.]
’It’s basically the same thing. Raphia Grass smells nice too if you spray it with perfume.’
Moira Lynch put the Fangfei Silk in her hand into the previously rejected mystery box and sent it to the shipping chute again.
Sure enough, the mystery box wasn’t returned this time.
Now that she knew the reason for the rejections, Moira Lynch’s speed increased considerably.
With her spiritual power, Moira Lynch was able to multitask three things at once.
One part of her spiritual power folded the boxes, while another part grabbed the Raphia—no, the Fangfei Silk.
Meanwhile, Moira Lynch herself was responsible for placing the items into the boxes now filled with Fangfei Silk.
This streamlined process saved Moira Lynch a great deal of time.
