Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 263: Elf and Sugar 4
The interior of the Elf Tree House was hundreds, even thousands of times larger than it appeared from the outside. This was a real factory.
"Can I ask something? Since you have so much Elf Syrup that you need to hire people to dispose of it, why do you keep growing giant sugarcane?"
Eleanor Vaughn walked ahead and said without turning back, "Because this Elf Syrup is from last year. We of the Elven Race only eat what’s freshly produced in the current year."
"Only the fresh stuff?"
"Correct." Eleanor Vaughn patiently explained, "Only desserts made from fresh Elf Syrup have the best taste. Eating them ensures our warriors remain in peak condition."
As she said this, a proud expression filled Eleanor Vaughn’s face.
Moira Lynch listened and nodded silently.
’It feels a bit wasteful, but who am I to complain when I’m the one benefiting in the end?’
Eleanor Vaughn led Moira Lynch through a long production workshop corridor. Inside, numerous Sea Sprites were busy at work.
They were all clad in white protective suits, and the surroundings were also extremely clean.
In just a moment, an exquisitely crafted dessert was born in their hands.
Just as mentioned before, to preserve the pure and authentic flavor of the sweets, the Elven Race always insisted on making everything by hand.
Seeing Moira Lynch watching, mesmerized, Eleanor Vaughn walked over to a glass window and knocked on it.
A Sea Sprite who heard the sound quickly came over, holding something that resembled a sugar figurine.
Eleanor Vaughn took the sugar figurine, turned, and handed it to Moira Lynch. "A gift for you."
Moira Lynch looked at the little blue bird before her, blinked, and reached out to take it. "Thank you."
Although she didn’t know the species, the texture of every single feather on the little bird’s body was clearly visible. The entire bird was so lifelike it seemed as if it would come alive at any moment.
The next second, the blue bird in her hand actually flapped its wings and chirped twice, startling Moira Lynch.
Seeing this, Eleanor Vaughn explained, "This type of sugar is called Cloud Sugar. Desserts made from it can move as if they’re alive. They’re very popular with children."
Moira Lynch tried taking a bite.
The candy, naturally, was sweet, but not overly so. It was a light sweetness with a faint fruity aroma.
Moreover, it looked like a hard candy, but it was only hard for the instant she bit down.
Once in her mouth, it quickly softened. The texture was like a combination of Jell-O and gummy candies.
Led by Eleanor Vaughn, the two arrived before a door.
Opening the door revealed a long wooden staircase. The surrounding walls also seemed to be made of wood, with a texture like tree bark that felt uneven to the touch.
At regular intervals, lamps glowing faintly were set into the walls on either side.
Upon closer inspection, she saw that the lamps didn’t contain light bulbs, but rather individual Sweet Fireflies.
’Speaking of which, I collected quite a few of these Sweet Fireflies on the Crino Prairie before.’
’The environment in my space is comfortable and food is plentiful, so these Sweet Fireflies have multiplied considerably.’
’I had originally planned to sell these Sweet Fireflies as a product.’
’But since Cathaya’s power grid never collapsed, and the Sweet Fireflies need sugar to glow, sales weren’t very high. Most of the buyers were from overseas.’
After walking for a few minutes, they finally reached the end of the stairs.
A door appeared before Moira Lynch.
Beyond the door was a pitch-black space, like a beast with its great, bloody maw wide open. She could only use the faint light from outside to barely, and only partially, make out what was inside... Yeah, right.
Eleanor Vaughn lightly clapped her hands twice.
In an instant, the entire space became as bright as day.
She then pointed inside, gesturing for Moira Lynch to look. "Everything in here is leftover Elf Syrup from last year, as well as various unsold candies and desserts. In addition, there’s also a portion of even older stock from before last year piled up here."
"Go ahead and start collecting. Take as much as you can, but it’s fine if you can’t get it all. Don’t push yourself. We’ve also hired other Recyclers."
Although all of Moira Lynch’s current reviews were five-star, Eleanor Vaughn couldn’t help but feel a little worried as she looked at her slender frame.
Moira Lynch didn’t pay any mind to Eleanor Vaughn’s last sentence. ’What does she mean, "Don’t push yourself?" I don’t feel strained in the slightest, okay?’
’But her earlier words did catch my attention.’
’A portion of Elf Syrup from previous years... That means this isn’t all of it, right?’
’I really want to tell Eleanor Vaughn that there’s no need for other Recyclers, that I’m more than enough for the job.’
’But looking at the worried expression in her eyes, I’d better show her what I’m capable of first.’
’Then, maybe I won’t even have to ask. Eleanor Vaughn will offer it herself.’
Moira Lynch gave a humble smile and said, "Alright."
Seeing this, Eleanor Vaughn nodded. "In that case, I won’t go in. It’s time for me to get to work. Do a good job, and just contact me directly if you need anything."
With that, Eleanor Vaughn turned and left.
Only after Eleanor Vaughn’s figure had disappeared from sight did Moira Lynch step inside.
As far as the eye could see, the space was enormous, at least a thousand square meters in area.
Fortunately, the items inside were not cluttered.
Even though these were items to be disposed of, the Sea Sprites had sorted and labeled everything by category, which made things much more convenient for Moira Lynch.
’So, sorting your trash really is important after all.’
Perhaps because the room was filled with sugar, Moira Lynch felt that the very air was sweet. Even the saliva gathering in her mouth seemed to taste sweeter.
Moira Lynch first walked over to an area dedicated to wooden barrels.
She scanned them with her spiritual power and found that all the barrels were sealed. Each one came up to about her waist, bulging in the middle with narrower tops and bottoms.
[Handmade Elven Barrel: Crafted from the wood of withered Elf Tree Houses. Its internal space is far larger than its external appearance suggests. One barrel can hold approximately one ton of liquid.]
On a nearby sign, the words "Elf Syrup" were written in interstellar language. Below them, in smaller letters, were the words "Giant Sugarcane."
Meaning, this was Elf Syrup extracted from giant sugarcane.
’I don’t care what it’s extracted from. Time is limited, so I’ll just take it all first and ask questions later.’
There were hundreds of barrels of Elf Syrup extracted from giant sugarcane. It took her a few minutes to move them all into her space and place them in her warehouse.
’Lately, revenue from the "Don’t Miss It" shop has been skyrocketing, freeing up quite a few warehouses. Now they’re coming in handy.’
After clearing out one area, Moira Lynch moved on to the next.
