The cold didn't start in his chest; it began deep in his core, radiating outward from the harvested tissue his body was drawing on for the compile.

A sudden, razor-sharp freeze spread outward along his central nervous system, shooting through his diaphragm, radiating into his ribcage, and plunging straight down the main arteries of his thighs. It wasn't the ambient chill of a mountain draft. It was an aggressive, predatory frost that felt as if liquid sulfur had been replaced with liquid nitrogen, searing his vascular pathways from the inside out.

Rowan gasped, his lungs seizing as the cold locked around his windpipe. The subcutaneous tissue along his collarbones began to tear.

***Source Material: Cryo-Scarabaeus Glandular Matrix (Harvested)***

***Integration Target: Dermal Sweat Glands & Subcutaneous Micro-Vascular Network***

***Compatibility Delta: 72% [STRUCTURAL RESTRUCTURING INITIATED]***

***Energy Draw: Substantial [DEPLETING INTERNAL METABOLIC RESERVES]***

Rowan pitched forward onto his hands and knees, his forehead slamming against the slate floor.

His chest flush-heated—an intense, sickening counter-reaction as his human immune system fought the cellular rewrite. Beneath his field shirt, the skin across his chest, back, and shoulders felt as though it were being systematically unstitched with hot wire. Microscopic tubules were forcing their way through the basal layer of his epidermis, anchoring themselves directly into the walls of his sweat glands.

The pain wasn't symbolic. It was brutally anatomical.

He could feel his native sweat ducts—simple coiled tubular glands meant to excrete water and salt—being forced open, their inner linings lined with thin membranes of calcified lipids. Secondary micro-channels tore through the surrounding connective tissue, branching off his main subcutaneous blood vessels to form dual-chamber isolation loops.

Rowan clenched his jaw so hard his molars creaked, his knuckles turning white against the hot gravel. Sweat didn't pour off him; it was pulled.

Every drop of available water remaining in his muscle tissue and bloodstream was dragged toward his chest and back to feed the chemical synthesis. His mouth turned to bone-dry ash. His vision blurred, swimming with red static as acute dehydration hit his brain like a sledgehammer.

"Rowan...?" Kaelen's weak, terrified voice drifted from the alcove. "Rowan, what's... what's wrong with your back?"

Rowan couldn't answer. He couldn't draw enough air past his tightened throat to form a word.

Under his torn leather shirt, his skin was writhing. Pale, raised lines shot across his shoulder blades like cracking ice on a frozen pond. The pores along his sternum flared, turning a mottled, translucent white as the dual-chamber tubules locked into his vascular network.

He felt his internal fat stores and blood glucose vanish—burned away to fuel the Bio-Compile interface as it forced his baseline human biology to accept the alien architecture. The 72% compatibility margin proved its danger. Where his native tissue resisted the integration, micro-hemorrhages bloomed under his skin, dark purple bruises spreading along his ribs where capillary walls strained under the pressure before being forcibly mended by the rewrite.

He hung on his knees, his forehead pressed to the stone, shivering violently against the furnace heat pressing in from the cavern around him.

Breathe, he told himself, locking his focus onto the rhythm of his racing heart. Don't fight the rewrite. Let the tubules anchor.

Seconds dragged like hours. The tearing sensation beneath his skin gradually gave way to a dull, throbbing ache. The intense internal freeze settled into a cold, heavy pressure sitting directly behind his sternum—a permanent, physical alteration anchored into his biology.

A soft, wet hiss echoed off the cavern walls.

It came from Rowan's own body.

A fine, pale vapor erupted from the pores across his chest, shoulders, and neck. The moment the clear, dual-compound secretion hit the humid, sulfurous air of the sinkhole, it phase-shifted. A thin, sparkling layer of white frost bloomed across Rowan's bare skin, chilling his surface body sharply and suddenly.

The oppressive heat of the cavern vanished from his torso, replaced by an intense, stinging cold.

Rowan let out a long, ragged exhale. His breath didn't come out as hot, dry gas; it emerged as a thick plume of white steam.

The blue text flared across his vision, stabilizing into crisp, permanent notifications.

***[ COMPILATION COMPLETE ]***

Evolution Established:

***Tier: 1***

***Form: Adapted Survivor***

***Form Level: 1/10***

Active Capabilities Unlocked:

***- [Endothermic Mucosal Secretion] Lv. 1/5 (Active)***

* Function: Secretes a dual-compound medium through altered dermal pores, forcing an immediate endothermic phase-shift.

* Cost: Energy (Active Draw) + Hydration (Body Water Draw).

Systemic Warning:

Physical Status: Severe Metabolic Exhaustion, Acute Dehydration.

Hydration Reserves: CRITICAL. Immediate water intake required to prevent tissue necrosis.

Rowan slowly pushed himself up from the floor.

His limbs felt like lead, his muscles trembling from the massive drain, but his skin was cold. Where the geothermal heat had been scorching his arms minutes ago, the frost-layer now absorbed the heat, venting it away in a continuous, quiet plume of vapor.

He wasn't a shapeshifter. He didn't have a beetle's carapace or insect limbs. He was still a man, standing on two legs, but his skin was now marked by pale, intricate lines of modified pores that looked like frost patterns etched into glass.

Rowan turned his head toward the alcove.

Kaelen was staring at him, his eyes wide with a horror so profound it surpassed his pain. The junior handler had backed himself as far into the limestone crevice as his broken leg would allow, his hands digging into the loose gravel.

"Rowan..." Kaelen's voice trembled, his gaze locked on Rowan's chest. "Your... your skin... it's steaming... What did you do to yourself?"

Rowan looked down at his hands. Pale frost-mist was curling off his knuckles, drifting down to touch the hot shale floor.

"I used the beetle," Rowan said. His voice was raspy, dry as cracked leather, but completely calm.

Kaelen swallowed hard, a visceral shudder passing through his frame. He looked at Rowan not as a monster, but as something fundamentally unsettling—a man who had just deliberately dismantled his own human baseline with a scalpel and a smile. "Rowan... that's not... humans don't do that. That's what the guild surgeons do to pit-fighters..."

"Guild surgeons are for men with deep pockets and time to spare," Rowan said, stepping over to his kit and picking up his canteen. "We have neither."

He unstoppered the canteen. The water inside was lukewarm, but to his parched, post-compilation throat, it was life. He took two precise swallows—no more—feeling the liquid immediately vanish into his dehydrated tissues.

He re-plugged the canteen, tied it to his belt, and picked up his tracking knife.

The compilation hadn't made him stronger. His right shoulder still throbbed from the fall, his ribs were badly bruised, his body was running on empty, and their water was almost gone. He wasn't an apex predator.

But he could walk through the fire.

Rowan walked to the edge of the limestone ledge, looking out over the two hundred yards of scalding, bubbling sulfur mud separating them from the cool southern shelf.

He raised his right arm, activating the new capability.

***[ ACTIVATING: [Endothermic Mucosal Secretion] ]***

Drawing Energy... Drawing Hydration...

A fresh wave of frost-mist erupted from his palm and forearm. He reached down and pressed his hand flat against the scalding, gray mud crust at his feet.

Where his palm made contact, the heat didn't reach him. A thin skin of frost crept out beneath his hand, just enough to hold the boiling crust at bay and let him keep his palm pressed flat against it without his skin blistering.

Rowan pulled his hand back, flexing his fingers, watching the frost-dusted print fade as the rift's heat reclaimed it.

He turned back to Kaelen, his eyes sharp in the dim orange light.

"Grab your harness, Kaelen," Rowan said, picking up the hemp rope drag-litter. "We're crossing.”
