Rowan Miller spent four years as a specimen handler for the Vane-Hollow Extraction Company. Now he's trapped in the Living Basin with a shattered supply line, no rescue coming, and a fellow handler whose broken leg means Rowan is the only reason either of them survives the week.

The Bio-Compiler he wakes up with doesn't hand him power. Scan a creature and the system is blunt about what it won't give you: understanding insufficient, blueprint unavailable. Rowan has to actually work out how an adaptation functions — cut it open, test the mechanism, understand it on his own — before the system will let him build it into his own body.

And building it isn't free. When Rowan integrates a filter that lets him breathe a lethal gas, it costs him a nosebleed, a thirst that nearly drops him, and days of recovery before the new tissue stabilizes. Every adaptation he forces into himself is a trade he has to survive making, not a stat he unlocks.

Kaelen is trusting Rowan with a knife, a scalpel, and his life — and what Rowan chooses to build decides whether they both make it out of the Basin at all.

But the wilderness isn't the only thing they're up against. The company that stranded them hasn't given up on what's down here, and what they're planning to do to the Basin won't stay contained to the depths once it starts.

Rowan isn't collecting monster powers. He's studying every organism that could kill him closely enough to understand it — then rebuilding himself with the answer, one working, costly adaptation at a time.
