After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter thirty one: The Sky is Ours
The freezing ocean gale slammed fucking salt spray against the razor-sharp ledge, but it couldn't dent the suffocating, fever-pitch heat burning the air between them. Adrian’s massive, corded arms locked Mari dead-flush against his chest, crushing her so brutally tight she could barely draw breath—his entire existence narrowed down to a singular, frantic obsession with keeping her tethered to reality.
Just seconds ago, as the corporate dragnet closed in, Ren had cut through the chaos—sharp, brilliant, and completely fearless under fire. He was the vital axis of her inner circle, the tech specialist who owned the digital battlefield, guarding her flanks with fierce, obsessive devotion directed at no one in the universe except Mari.
Rejoining them now, Ren slammed his shoulder hard against her left side, his fingers flying across a secondary tactical hardwire to shield her digital interface from counter-intrusion, his eyes blazing with absolute, worshipful loyalty for his queen.
"The relay is locked, goddamnit!" Lena shrieked over the howling wind, her eyes blown wide with terrifying, manic triumph.
Lena wasn't just their brilliant hacker; she was utterly consumed by Mari, her genius wired exclusively into her obsession, trembling with the same intoxicating, electric need as she hammered the cracked tablet, her entire soul anchored only to Mari's command.
Mari pressed her burning cheek against Adrian’s solid chest for one raw, agonizing heartbeat. To her right stood Kael. Silent, lethal, and relentlessly focused, Kael was the ultimate perimeter blade of her inner circle, his dark gaze burning down at her with absolute, fanatical reverence—wholly and exclusively devoted to protecting Mari as his singular, holy purpose.
"Do it, Queen. Take the sky," Kael murmured, his voice a low, gravelly anchor that sent a shiver straight down her spine.
"Do it, Mari," Sera breathed, stepping in close from behind. Sera was her feral shadow, her dark queen in the ruins, entirely fixated on Mari. With a flick of her wrist, pure, sub-zero frost bled from her fingertips, encasing the jagged stone ledge around them in a thick, glittering barrier of ice that blocked the howling gale and locked them safely inside their own volatile sanctuary. Her freezing hands slid over Mari's waist with a possessive, scorching contrast against her sub-zero magic. "Burn them all."
The white-hot torture in her forearms shrieked through her nervous system as she ripped her hand up, slamming her neural interface straight into the sub-net. A roaring, blinding tsunami of raw code flooded her brain.
Reality fractured, tearing away to reveal a sprawling, lethal matrix of corporate data-streams and orbital death platforms.
"I've got the bastards," Mari hissed, her voice vibrating with cold, absolute, godlike fury.
Continental miles away, inside the obsidian corporate towers, emergency klaxons screamed in a deafening, catastrophic wail. Hit squads hurtling down in armed transports watched their cockpit navigation systems flatline into a violent, blinding red.
"What the fuck is happening? We're losing flight control!" a squad leader screamed into his comms just as his transport's thrusters slammed into a death-spiral.
"Do it, Mari. Burn the motherfuckers to ash," Adrian growled, his teeth bared against her temple, his heavy, calloused hands gripping her hips with bruising possessiveness. Beside him, Ren dropped his secondary cable and braced his weight against them, throwing his own body as a living shield.
Mari shoved her consciousness forward with merciless, violent force.
High above the atmosphere, the orbital defense satellites snapped into alignment, locking kinetic strike arrays onto every primary command complex. In a fraction of a second, blinding, earth-shattering columns of white-hot plasma slammed from the heavens, pulverizing the gleaming towers into a smoking, molten hellscape of glass and pulverized steel.
The sonic shockwave hit the cliffside like a physical blow, shattering the outer edges of Sera's ice barrier into a million diamond shards.
Mari gasped, violently severing the neural link and slumping hard against Adrian with a ragged, shuddering cry. He caught her instantly, his mouth crashing down onto hers in a deep, punishing, utterly consuming kiss that tasted of copper, smoke, and pure, savage victory. Kael immediately stepped in, pulling her mouth to his for a searing, desperate claim, while Ren and Adrian locked around them like a wall of muscle and heat.
Sera laughed—a dark, beautiful, feral sound—pressing her frost-kissed mouth hungrily against Mari's neck, while Lena broke down, burying her face against Mari's shoulder and sobbing with unhinged, delirious joy before pulling Mari into her arms as well.
The post-apocalyptic wasteland stretched out endlessly before them, and the empire was nothing but fucking rubble. But standing surrounded by the men and women who existed solely to worship and protect her, whose every breath, blade, code, and frost-storm were devoted entirely to keeping Mari alive, she knew the bleeding sky belonged to them.
The air turned brutal.
Before the last echo of the orbital strike even died, Mari whirled around, slamming her hand flat against Adrian’s chest and shoving him back just enough to anchor her feet. The phantom burn in her forearms shrieked, but she ignored it, her dark gaze locking onto her inner circle with absolute, predatory command.
"The high council's in the deep-level salt bunkers," Mari hissed, her voice cutting through the ozone-heavy wind like a razor. "They're trying to boot the sleeper protocols right now."
Kael didn’t hesitate. He lunged forward, crowding into her space with heavy, suffocating heat, his hand locking around her hip while his combat knife flashed in the gray light. "Say the word, Queen. Do I flood their tunnels with nitrogen, or do I go down there and slice every last throat?"
"Both," Sera purred, sliding in from behind. With a flick of her wrist, sub-zero frost erupted across the stone, encasing them in a blinding, glittering cage of ice while her freezing fingers trailed aggressively up Mari’s spine. "Kael plays butcher in the dark. I freeze their backup cores solid. Not a single rat gets out."
"They're completely blind," Ren snapped, his fingers hammering a secondary console as he wedged his lean frame against Mari's left side, pressing his heat hard against her ribs. "I've got their comms trapped in a feedback loop. They have zero links left topside."
Adrian growled—a deep, feral sound vibrating straight through the floor—and yanked Mari flush against his massive frame, crushing her mouth with a punishing, bruising kiss that tasted of copper and pure dominance. He tore his lips away just an inch, his heavy breathing hot against her skin. "We take the whole fucking thing."
"Move," Mari commanded, her pulse hammering wildly as Kael, Ren, Sera, and Adrian closed in around her like a living wall of muscle, frost, and devotion.
They didn't walk to the transports; they tore across the ruined ledge, ready to plunge straight into the dark and rip the rest of the empire apart.
