Chapter 525: Intelligence on City D

"You can come with us to City D Base."

Because it involved matters from her past life, Nina Jacobs couldn’t press the matter any further.

Since Ethan Young knew about those people, maybe he would uncover something later on.

"Thank you."

Ethan Young’s voice was choked with emotion.

Even though it was a transaction, Nina Jacobs had indeed saved his life.

Looking at Ethan Young like this, Nina Jacobs couldn’t help but say, "You... should probably get some rest."

Having a man with a swollen face stare at her, his eyes filled with gratitude, made her feel a bit awkward.

Since Wayne Warner had to drive, Nina Jacobs decided the remaining three of them would take turns on watch that night.

Although they were in sleeping bags, Wayne Warner had also hauled a few bed frames down from inside the house.

The four simple beds were arranged around the fireplace, separated by a thin wall of earth for a bit of privacy.

Nina Jacobs took out her Unlimited Communicator and saw she had over twenty messages from Vera Coleman.

’Did something happen at the base?’

She started from the first message and read through them carefully, quickly understanding why Vera Coleman was so anxious.

It turned out that after the extreme cold, the rivers had frozen solid. The original Rivermouth Pier and several other waterways had all turned into surfaces of ice.

This allowed the zombies that had been trapped on the other side of the river to cross the ice and head toward City D.

City D Base had a large population. Although the base had already used various heavy weapons for bombardment, they couldn’t hold back the sheer number of zombies. Myra Lawson predicted that a zombie tide would likely surge toward the base in the coming days.

And its scale was unknown.

For the past two days, the base had been advising against going out.

Others might not know, but Vera Coleman knew her daughter, Nina Jacobs, was on her way back.

The thought of Nina Jacobs potentially running into a zombie tide made her frantic with worry. Thankfully, she had the communicator and urged Nina to return to Riventon Base to hide out for a while.

Returning to Riventon Base was out of the question, but Nina Jacobs still replied to Vera Coleman, telling her not to worry.

The zombie tide hadn’t formed yet. Perhaps she could make it back before it did.

Another piece of news from Vera Coleman banished all thoughts of sleep.

The Base Commander, Justin Lawson, was sick.

She remembered from her past life that Justin Lawson had never been in good health. He had died in the second year after the extreme cold weather.

Ordinary elderly people simply couldn’t withstand the trial of the extreme cold. Justin Lawson didn’t have a Superpower, so it was normal that he couldn’t handle such weather.

Fortunately, there were many excellent Healers in the base, and Justin Lawson’s condition had stabilized, but he was completely unable to go outside.

What worried Daniel Hale was that City D Base was now a mixed bag of characters. With the Base Commander ill, many new factions would start coveting his position.

After all, City D Base was already a Tier Three Base, and the power held by the commander of a Tier Three Base was not to be underestimated.

’Looks like a lot must have happened at the base these past three months or so.’

After replying to Vera Coleman, Nina Jacobs turned off the Unlimited Communicator.

’We need to speed up our return to the base.’

By the next day, Ethan Young looked much better. At least his face wasn’t as swollen. Still, Nina Jacobs gave him a thermal balaclava to cover his head.

She had only given Ethan Young a small dose of a Healing Potion, which would make his recovery look more natural.

Once they were back on the road, Ethan Young had intended to kill more zombies, but he soon discovered that both Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner were far stronger than he was.

Even Nia, who looked so small and thin, was always able to produce all sorts of weapons, saving them a great deal of time.

"There’s a river up ahead. We’ll have to take a detour."

Just as they were about to reach a main road, Nina Jacobs had Wayne Warner stop the vehicle.

She asked Nia, "How many Red Lotus Boxes do you have left?"

A Red Lotus Box, once used, could lure away a large number of zombies.

"Not many, only about fifteen left. You think the road ahead is dangerous?" Nia asked.

"Yeah. There’s a river ahead. Across it used to be a populous county. I’m worried the zombies from there have crossed the river and are gathering on the road."

Nina Jacobs wasn’t just guessing. She could see on her system’s map that the road segment ahead was completely congested and marked in red.

Even the detour routes were the same.

"Then let’s just blow them all up. I don’t have enough Red Lotus Boxes, but I still have Cloud-breaking Thunders. They’re perfect for wide-area attacks."

As Nia spoke, several spherical objects appeared in her palm. She pressed a button on the side of one, and two small wings instantly unfolded.

"Cloud-breaking Thunders?"

Nina Jacobs then realized that it was these little flying bombs that had reduced Quelldra County to ruins.

"As long as you set the distance, they can fly to the target and detonate. At maximum power, one can demolish a building over thirty stories high," Nia explained. The Cloud-breaking Thunders also had a flight range of up to one kilometer.

She had made a lot of Cloud-breaking Thunders back when she was with her organization, but most of them were left in The Aegis Conclave’s armory. She had only applied to take some with her in her space before heading to Quelldra County.

Hearing this, Nina Jacobs’s eyes lit up. "How many Cloud-breaking Thunders do you have left?"

"Thirty-nine," Nia replied.

"More than enough."

Nina Jacobs thought for a moment. If they had enough time, she and Wayne Warner wouldn’t be afraid of those zombies.

But according to the system map, zombies from across the river were still crossing the ice and converging on the road. If they didn’t get through quickly, they were very likely to be surrounded on all sides.

Nina Jacobs took out a drone from the back of the armored vehicle. It was a gift from Audrey Crowley of the Crowley Clan.

The drone flew ahead into the gray sky, and before long, a series of worrying images appeared on the tablet.

Zombies walked one after another across the black ice as if drawn by delicious prey up ahead. They gathered on the road, then slowly began to move forward along it...

"Whoa, there are so many zombies! Won’t it be awesome to use the Cloud-breaking Thunders on them?"

Hearing Nia’s words, Nina Jacobs smiled.

’It really should be awesome.’

Ethan Young stared at the two of them, astonished. There were at least several thousand zombies in the video feed, yet these two seemed to be competing over who was more excited.

Over the dilapidated road, several silver, spherical objects flew past in silence.

A moment later, monstrous plumes of fire erupted one after another in the air ahead.

"There’s no sound?"

Nina Jacobs had braced herself for the sound of explosions. Generally, the more powerful the weapon, the louder the blast.

Nia smiled confidently. "That’s because I sound-proofed them."

"Then let’s charge right through."

Nina Jacobs watched the footage streaming from the drone.

The Cloud-breaking Thunders had already blown most of the zombies on and alongside the road to bits.

Wayne Warner slammed the accelerator to the floor. The roar of the engine sent vibrations through the ice on both sides—vibrations that were actually the thudding of zombies running across it.

Countless pairs of rotting feet ground against the ice, which creaked and groaned under the strain. Some zombies fell, only to scramble back up, their eyes fixed on the armored vehicle driving down the center of the road.

Nina Jacobs opened the car window and, with a wave of her hand, conjured a stone wall on the side of the road.

Seeing this, Ethan Young also activated his Earth Element Superpower to block the zombies on the other side.

While driving, Wayne Warner enveloped the armored vehicle’s body with his Strength Element Superpower.

The zombies that charged them head-on were instantly sent flying.

"We’re through!" Ethan Young exclaimed, his voice filled with excitement.

「Inside City D Base.」

Several Spiritual Element Superpower Users were scattered in various locations throughout the base.

Including Daniel Hale, they had barely dared to close their eyes for three consecutive days.

"Their numbers are still increasing. The drones are almost useless for driving them away," one of the Spiritual Element Superpower Users said uneasily.
