Above the Mage!
Chapter 111 - 110: Spirit Ascension Water
Chapter 111: Chapter 110: Spirit Ascension Water
As a long-established Magic Academy founded thousands of years ago, the Cyrus Magic Academy boasted a fully developed internal organizational structure and departmental setup. The highest leader was Dean Shire Ian, who was responsible for overall management and decision-making. Beneath him were two vice deans who assisted with daily affairs.
Then came the core department responsible for the entire academy’s teaching management and operation: the Committee. Its duties included curriculum design, mentor evaluations, student management, budget allocation, and other academic activities. Following that were the three teaching departments: the Magic Skills Department, the Magic Department, and the Basic Knowledge Department. Finally, there was the Logistics Department, which oversaw daily operations, maintained buildings and infrastructure, handled necessary repairs and upgrades, and ensured the academy’s security.
At this moment, the two mages arguing until their faces were red were both commissioners of the Committee.
"Mage Tyro, wasn’t the allocation of the Spirit Ascension Water settled half a year ago? Now you’re suddenly saying that the portion belonging to my apprentice must be yielded to some Wild Mage of unknown origins. What is the meaning of this?"
The core of their dispute was the allocation of the Spirit Ascension Water. As an important Ring Promotion Potion for Mage Apprentices, its distribution had always been one of the most sensitive topics within the academy.
The commissioner known as Mage Tyro was equally short-tempered. Unfazed, he shot back loudly, "Commissioner Lael, don’t think that just because you’re loud, you’re in the right. Everything I’ve done is in accordance with the academy’s rules and regulations.
"You call him a Wild Mage, but he came with a recommendation letter from Dean Gavin. According to the rules, our academy must unconditionally admit anyone holding such a letter with the highest treatment.
"The highest treatment in this academy means that, aside from unconditionally assigning him an Advanced Mentor, he is also entitled to a portion of the Spirit Ascension Water. If you’re dissatisfied, go argue with Dean Gavin. What’s the point of yelling at me here? Do you think I’m a pushover?"
"But..." Mage Lael was momentarily choked up. While Dean Shire had the authority to change the rules left by the former dean, a mere commissioner like him naturally did not dare to do so. He could only argue vehemently, "But that Wild Mage isn’t even a Third-class Mage Apprentice. The Spirit Ascension Water would be useless even if you gave it to him! Meanwhile, Triff has been stuck as a Third-class Mage Apprentice for three years. If he doesn’t get the Spirit Ascension Water this year, he’ll waste yet another year..."
Seeing Mage Lael’s voice soften and his attitude improve significantly, Mage Tyro also calmed down and spoke unhurriedly.
"I’m not targeting your apprentice. I know Triff has been a Third-class Apprentice for a long time. The truth is, Triff’s assessment scores have never met the requirements, which is why he hasn’t been able to obtain a bottle of Spirit Ascension Water.
"The Royal Family has already been generous enough to our academy when it comes to the allocation of Ring Promotion Potions.
"Not to mention that any Third-class Mage Apprentice in our academy who meets the assessment requirements can unconditionally receive a bottle of Spirit Ascension Water, they also allocate us five extra portions every year for internal distribution or to handle special circumstances.
"It’s just that Triff..."
Mage Tyro shook his head and sighed with pity. "Commissioner Lael, I know he’s your sister’s only son, but you should know his talent as a mage better than I do. Even among the students who failed to meet the assessment requirements, he is at the very bottom.
"It’s not that I have something against him; it’s simply that he’s too disappointing.
"If it weren’t for your contributions to the academy over the years, it never would have been his turn to receive this bottle of Spirit Ascension Water in the first place.
"Now that someone has enrolled with Dean Gavin’s recommendation letter, according to the rules, we must yield a portion of the Spirit Ascension Water to him.
"Since this year’s quota of five portions of Spirit Ascension Water was already fully allocated at the beginning of the year, there are none left. Based on the previously established distribution sequence, if we absolutely have to give up one portion, it can only be Triff’s."
After Mage Tyro finished speaking, Mage Lael’s face flushed with alternating hues of green and pale white. In the end, he was left speechless. Mage Tyro’s words were indeed fully in compliance with the rules and regulations, a fact Lael knew perfectly well. The only reason he had kicked up a fuss at today’s meeting was in the hopes that making a scene might force a turning point in the situation.
Another commissioner of the Committee, who had been sitting on the sidelines observing for a long time, suddenly spoke up. "Sigh. I can understand how Mage Lael feels. Triff will be twenty-one next year. If he misses out this year, he will miss the golden period for promoting to a 1st Ring Mage.
"Mage Lael has been diligent and responsible all these years, making numerous contributions to the academy.
"Moreover, Mage Lael has dedicated his entire life to cultivating magic. Having neither a wife nor children, Triff is his only blood relative. We shouldn’t let Mage Lael’s heart turn cold like this."
"What’s this, Mage Red? Could it be that you have the authority to invalidate Dean Gavin’s recommendation letter?" Mage Tyro glanced at the speaker, his tone carrying a faint mockery. "Or perhaps you’re prepared to be entirely selfless and give up the bottle of Spirit Ascension Water allocated to your family?"
"Of course not. Although Dean Gavin is no longer with us, as the former dean of the academy, how could I dare disrespect him?" The middle-aged mage known as Mage Red acted as if he hadn’t heard Mage Tyro’s barbed verbal attack, instead asking unhurriedly, "I just heard Mage Lael mention that this Wild Mage who came knocking with a recommendation letter doesn’t seem to have a very high Mage Level at present?"
"Right. The subordinates have already tested him carefully. He’s not very old, only thirteen or fourteen, but he’s already a Second-class Mage Apprentice. Although he doesn’t meet the academy’s admission standards, for a Wild Mage, his talent is actually quite decent." Despite his intense displeasure toward this "uninvited guest," Mage Lael still offered a fair assessment. "With the academy’s resources, becoming a 1st Ring Mage in the future will definitely be no problem for him, and there’s even a slight possibility of him becoming a 2nd Ring Mage."
Mage Red clapped his hands together. "There you have it."
"Huh?" Mage Lael looked at Mage Red in confusion.
Mage Red said leisurely, "This Wild Mage is only a Second-class Mage Apprentice. Even if you give him the Spirit Ascension Water, he won’t be able to use it anytime soon. Why don’t you just borrow the Spirit Ascension Water from him for now, Commissioner Lael, and return it to him next year? ℯ
"This way, we won’t be violating the former dean’s rules, and Commissioner Lael will get his wish. The best of both worlds—isn’t it wonderful?" After speaking, he looked toward Dean Shire, who was seated at the head of the table, silently asking for his opinion. ℯ
"Borrowing is permissible, but you are not allowed to use coercive methods to achieve this. Otherwise, it wouldn’t just be a sign of disrespect to Dean Gavin; it would also be a blow to the reputation of our Cyrus Magic Academy," Dean Shire pointed out expressionlessly.
"I understand, I understand!" Having experienced such an emotional rollercoaster, Mage Lael found it somewhat hard to contain himself. He quickly patted his chest and promised, "I will definitely handle this matter flawlessly. I won’t leave anyone with anything to gossip about!"
With Dean Shire’s nod, the matter was temporarily settled.
Dean Shire Ian spoke up once again. "Including the Wild Mage who came with the recommendation letter, we have six new students enrolling this month.
"Among them, the Wild Mage holding Dean Gavin’s recommendation letter and Jelica are to be admitted with the highest treatment. They need to be assigned an Advanced Mentor who is a 3rd Ring Mage."
