Chapter 349: Chapter 349: Robbing the Cradle (5)
’If the Young Master hadn’t said a word, he could have understood. The Young Master wasn’t very talkative to begin with, and besides, who could possibly guess his thoughts? But what was with this girl? She was the one receiving the ride, after all. Didn’t she have any questions at all? And they were taking her home! Not even a single thank you?’
Leo Warren was torn. Lately, he felt like his brain just wasn’t enough! It was one thing not to be able to guess the Young Master’s thoughts—after all, he was Mr. Quinn of Aethelgard, and he wasn’t the only one who couldn’t figure him out. But how had he fallen so low that he couldn’t even read a young girl’s mind?
"Red light," Nadia Chapman said, looking at Leo Warren in surprise. ’Doesn’t he even know the rules of the road? That can’t be right, can it?’
Leo Warren reflexively slammed on the brakes. This time, Nadia Chapman was prepared and wasn’t jolted. Martin Quinn in the back, however, wasn’t so lucky. Although he was agile and braced himself the instant he heard "red light," he still pitched forward violently.
"Leo Warren, I’ve never known you to be so obedient, slamming on the brakes the second you hear ’red light’!" Martin Quinn’s voice was ice-cold.
Leo Warren was startled. It was his fault for getting so lost in thought. "Sir, my apologies!"
"This young lady is impressive indeed, to make my driver so obedient! If I’d been a split-second slower, I’d have been thrown right into the windshield, wouldn’t I!" Martin Quinn could only see the back of Nadia Chapman’s head. He liked looking into her eyes; this distance, this feeling, made him deeply uncomfortable.
"Your driver isn’t obeying me; he’s obeying the rules of the road. ’Stop on red, go on green.’ It’s a rule even a three-year-old knows, and your driver certainly does too. Still, for your own sake, I’d advise you to hire a driver with better eyesight, and soon. This one’s vision is nothing to write home about. He just rear-ended Leo Fenton’s car, and now he failed to see a red light. Next time, it might be a serious accident."
As if completely oblivious to the threat in Martin Quinn’s voice, Nadia Chapman changed the subject. The transition was so smooth that it seemed entirely natural, without a hint of deliberate effort.
"That’s a suggestion worth considering." After a brief moment of surprise, Martin Quinn’s voice held a faint trace of amusement, the earlier menace completely gone. Leo Warren was floored once again. ’Since when is the Young Master so agreeable?’
Leo Warren’s heart began to pound. ’Wait a minute! The Young Master isn’t actually going to replace me, is he? I’ve been with him for five years! He couldn’t be that heartless, right?’ But then again, when had the Young Master ever let sentiment get in the way of a decision? Leo Warren was spectacularly doomed. For the rest of the drive, he shot endless, resentful glares at Nadia Chapman. But she, of course, had fallen silent again, as if nothing had happened.
"Stop up ahead," Nadia Chapman instructed, her tone perfectly natural and completely unapologetic.
Leo Warren was so angry he could have spat blood, but he didn’t dare slam on the brakes again. He brought the car to a smooth stop. Nadia Chapman exited the vehicle crisply, but before she could walk away, Martin Quinn stopped her. "Miss Chapman, we went to the trouble of taking time out of our day to bring you home. Shouldn’t you show your gratitude in some way?"
’I’ve met shameless people before, but never anyone *this* shameless!’ Nadia Chapman swallowed her retort. "You’re the ones who crashed into Leo Fenton’s car, which left me without a way home. It’s only right that you drive me back, isn’t it?"
’Is this girl insane? How dare she speak to the Young Master that way? It’s been so long since anyone dared to use such a casual tone with him! No, wait... there was Seraphina Sterling. And now, here’s another one!’
