A Night of Desire
Chapter 800 - 797: How Did You Offend Those People?
Chapter 800: Chapter 797: How Did You Offend Those People?
The frenzied fans who had chased after her saw that Clara Grant was suddenly gone. They stood at the corner, looking all around, seemingly chattering amongst themselves. ’They’re probably discussing how I just vanished,’ Clara thought.
After a moment, seeing that she was truly gone, the crowd dispersed in disappointment.
Only then did Clara Grant let out a sigh of relief. She leaned back against the car seat, closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and placed a hand over her heart.
As the crowd dispersed, Seth Quinn stood at the corner, looking around with extreme anxiety and concern for a moment. Then, he ran off in another direction, instantly disappearing into the stream of people.
After calming herself for a moment, Clara opened her eyes and looked at the man beside her. She smiled at him a bit sheepishly and was about to thank him when the man frowned and spoke first.
"What did you do to offend those people?"
"Huh?" Clara Grant was taken aback by his question, but she recovered in an instant.
’She was a bit speechless. ’Was this man’s train of thought just that strange, or did I really look like the kind of person who starts trouble and easily offends others?’
Seeing her awkward expression, the man reacted quickly, realizing he had probably misunderstood. "So, they weren’t chasing you because you offended them?" he asked.
Clara Grant quickly waved her hands in denial. "No, I didn’t offend them," she explained. "I just played a small part in a hit TV series, and they recognized me."
The man nodded, finally understanding. "Oh, so you’re a celebrity. Are fans here always this crazy?"
Clara Grant smiled modestly. "I’m not much of a celebrity, just an actress."
"If you’re aware of your influence, you should take precautions when you go out to avoid being recognized. But you..." he trailed off, looking her up and down before continuing, "Going out dressed like this is very dangerous."
"You’re right. It was my oversight." As Clara Grant spoke, her phone suddenly rang. She took it out and saw the caller ID was Seth Quinn. Only then did she remember that Seth had gone to park the car and must be worried since he couldn’t find her when he got back.
Holding her phone, she quickly said to the man, "Sir, thank you so much for today. I’m sorry for taking up your time. I’ll get out of the car now, so you can get on with your day. Thank you."
With that, she turned to open the car door and get out.
"Wait," the man behind her called out. Clara Grant turned back and saw him take a box out of the car’s glove compartment and hand it to her. "I happen to have a pair of women’s sunglasses here. You should wear them."
Clara Grant quickly tried to refuse, "Oh, no, I couldn’t."
’He had already helped me out so much today; how could I take something from him, too? What if he bought them for his girlfriend or wife? If I took them, he would have to go buy another pair, which would just be more trouble for him.’
"If you get recognized again, you might not be so lucky as to find another car to hide in," the man said, holding out the sunglasses case toward her again.
"Well, thank you then." After a moment of hesitation, Clara Grant finally reached out and took it. She admitted he was right. "But, we’re complete strangers. I can’t just take your things. Let me pay you for them."
As Clara Grant spoke, she started rummaging through her wallet, only to find she had no cash.
"They’re not expensive, don’t worry about it," the man said with a nonchalant smile.
"I can’t possibly do that. Why don’t you give me your business card, sir? When I get back and have some money, I’ll..."
Before she could finish, the man pointed to the phone that had been ringing in her hand. "Your phone has been ringing nonstop. You should take care of what’s important first."
Clara Grant looked at her phone, then back at the man, and had no choice but to relent. "Sir, thank you so, so much for today. I’ll get going then. Thank you, thank you."
Thanking him repeatedly, Clara Grant opened the car door, got out, and answered Seth Quinn’s call as she ran toward the restaurant entrance where she had been standing before.
The man also got out of the car. He watched Clara Grant’s figure disappear around the corner before closing his door and striding into a coffee shop.
「...」
After Clara Grant met up with Seth Quinn, neither of them dared to go into the restaurant. They just went straight to their car.
Once in the car, the tension Clara Grant had felt while walking finally eased. Even though she was wearing sunglasses, she was still terrified of being recognized again. That whole ordeal had been truly frightening.
She took the sunglasses off, let out a breath, and looked at Seth Quinn with a pitiful pout. "That scared me half to death just now."
Seth Quinn reached out, pulled her into his arms, and patted her back soothingly. "It’s okay. It’s okay now."
Then he added, blaming himself, "It’s all my fault. I know you’re well-known now, and I know so many people adore you, so how could I have been so careless? I should have taken every precaution when I brought you out."
"How could it be your fault? It’s not!" Clara Grant said, her voice muffled as she buried her head in his chest.
Of course, it wasn’t his fault. They had both gotten used to the days before she was famous, when the two of them could go out to eat or shop whenever they wanted without anyone recognizing them, let alone crowding around.
Now things had suddenly changed, and they hadn’t adapted yet, so neither of them had expected something like this to happen.
"Sigh, what a shame." Clara Grant lifted her head from his chest, looked at Seth Quinn pitifully, and asked, "Does this mean we can’t go around and have fun as freely as we used to anymore?"
Seth Quinn shrugged. "Being an actress, becoming famous, having so many people adore you... it all means you have to give up your complete freedom."
He could stop reporters and paparazzi from hounding them, but he had no control over the actions of the fans.
Feeling a bit dejected, Clara Grant put the sunglasses back in their case.
Seth Quinn glanced at the sunglasses and asked with some confusion, "By the way, I forgot to ask. Where’d you get the sunglasses?"
There weren’t any eyewear stores nearby, and he knew she didn’t have a habit of carrying sunglasses, so she definitely wouldn’t have brought a pair with her.
"Oh, when those people chased me to the street corner, I happened upon a car with an open door. In my panic, I just jumped in to hide. The sunglasses were a gift from the gentleman." Without giving it much thought, Clara Grant told him what had happened.
"A gentleman?" Seth Quinn’s gaze shifted from the sunglasses to Clara Grant’s face, and a subtle change flickered in his eyes. "You know him?"
"No, I don’t." Clara Grant shook her head.
"So he not only helped you, but he also gave you sunglasses?" Seth Quinn’s tone clearly carried a hint of suspicion.
