Chapter 739: Chapter 736: You Don’t Care About Me Anymore?
Sierra Sutton watched her steadily. He heard the venom in her words, but felt nothing inside.
Before, her words would have crushed him, leaving him disappointed and heartbroken. But now, it didn’t matter what she said or did.
Besides, after today, there would be nothing left between them.
"Autumn Shelby, how have you been?"
Though his tone was calm and his words seemed cordial, it was the first time he had ever called her by her full name, creating a palpable distance between them.
Autumn Shelby froze, then gave a self-mocking laugh. "Well? Do you think I could possibly be ’well’ in a place like this? Sierra Sutton, did you come here today to laugh at my misfortune? Seeing me like this, does it make you feel vindicated?"
Sierra’s expression and tone were both flat. "No. I don’t hate you. How could I feel vindicated?"
A flicker of joy flashed in Autumn’s eyes at his words, and she couldn’t stop herself from blurting out, "You really don’t hate me?"
Sierra looked at her and shook his head. Autumn’s facade of strength and indifference shattered in an instant. She reached across the table and grabbed his right hand, her words tumbling out in a rush. "Sierra, I really didn’t mean to hit you. After it happened, I was filled with regret, and I was so scared.
I was afraid you were going to die. If you died, no other man would ever love me the way you did! You have no idea... for the past two weeks, I didn’t know your condition. I didn’t know if you were dead or alive. You can’t imagine how tormented I was. Seeing you alive now... you just don’t know how happy I am.
Sierra, please forgive me! I really didn’t mean to hit you!"
"Of course you didn’t mean to hit me. You were trying to hit Clara Grant and the baby!" Despite his efforts to remain composed, Sierra’s voice grew agitated as he spoke, and he yanked his hand free from her grasp.
Autumn froze. Sierra took a moment to steady his emotions before continuing, "I wasn’t finished. I don’t hate you, but I also no longer have any illusions about you."
"No!" Autumn grew agitated as well. "I wasn’t trying to hit the baby! I was trying to hit Clara Grant! It was Clara!"
"But the baby was in her arms!" Sierra couldn’t stop his voice from rising. "Even if you were only trying to hit Clara, what did she ever do wrong? Does her life not matter? Does she deserve to die?"
"Doesn’t she deserve to die? She stole Seth Quinn from me, so why did she have to steal my son, too? Why did she have to steal..." She choked back the word ’you’.
Sierra shook his head in disappointment. "Autumn Shelby, how can you still be saying things like this? Weren’t you the one who didn’t want our son in the first place? You abandon him, but you can’t stand to see another woman treat him well? Is that how little you love him? You’d even rob him of his longing for a mother’s love?"
"No, that’s not it, I didn’t..."
Sierra stood up and looked down at her. "I came today to make a clean break—with you, and with our past. I’m taking my son back to the U.S.A. tonight, and we may never return. As for you... you’re on your own."
"Back to the U.S.A.? You’re not coming back?" Autumn mumbled to herself, as if she couldn’t comprehend his words. But Sierra had already turned to leave, without a trace of hesitation.
Autumn looked up at his retreating back, then suddenly shot up, hurried around the table, and grabbed his arm. "Sierra, are you abandoning me? Aren’t you going to wait for me so we can go back to the U.S.A. together?"
