When he asked what she had bought, Clara Grant was suddenly reminded of the birthday gift.

She turned to face him. "Oh, right. What kind of gift should we get for Dad? I wandered around for ages but couldn’t find anything suitable."

"So you went shopping with Sarah Shelby just to buy a gift? All right, you don’t have to worry about it. I’ll take care of everything."

"Really? Okay, then." Clara figured she didn’t really know her father-in-law’s tastes anyway, so she just nodded.

Remembering she had something to explain to him, she started to speak again. "Seth, today I..."

She had only managed a few words when Seth Quinn stood up with a smile. "It’s been a long day, and I’m a little tired. I’m going to take a shower first."

Clara had no choice but to fall silent. She watched him walk into the bathroom, thinking, ’I’ll just explain after he gets out of the shower.’

But she was exhausted. Before Seth had even finished his shower, she couldn’t fight it any longer, her eyes fluttering shut as she sank into a deep sleep.

When Seth emerged from the bathroom and walked to the bedside, he saw that she was already fast asleep.

Clara woke to find the space beside her empty. She glanced at the wall clock, then shot up in bed. ’Oh no, oh no! How is it already eight-thirty in the morning? I have a class this morning!’

Even though her classes were in the third and fourth periods, she’d be late if she didn’t hurry.

’No, no, that’s not even the main problem,’ she thought. ’The most important thing is the Quinn family rule: no matter what, everyone has to eat breakfast at the main residence.’

’And at this hour, breakfast must be long over!’

No one had ever broken this rule before. And here she was, a daughter-in-law who had only just married into the family, violating the house rules already?!

’What am I going to do?’

With no time to worry about anything else, Clara scrambled out of bed, dashed into the bathroom to wash up, threw on some clothes, and hurried downstairs.

Seeing her come down, Mrs. Wyatt immediately set aside her work and came forward with a smile. "Ma’am, you’re awake. I’ll have the kitchen bring out your breakfast right away."

Clara stopped in her tracks. "Mrs. Wyatt, where’s Seth?"

"The master left for work quite a while ago," Mrs. Wyatt replied with a smile. "Before he left, he told us not to disturb you and to have breakfast ready for whenever you woke up."

Clara was curious how Seth had explained her absence at the main residence, but she didn’t have time to dwell on it. She just nodded and said, "I can’t eat, Mrs. Wyatt. I’m going to be late, I have to go now."

"Ma’am, please slow down!" Mrs. Wyatt called out as she watched her dash away. "There’s no need to rush! The master arranged for the driver to take you to school..."

But Clara’s figure had already vanished from the courtyard. The moment she stepped out of Orchidia, she saw a car waiting at the gate.

She had heard what Mrs. Wyatt said but hadn’t had a chance to respond. Now, the driver spotted her, called out, "Ma’am," and opened the car door for her.

Clara quickly got into the car. Flustered and a little embarrassed, she said to the driver, "Could you please hurry? I’m running late."

The driver nodded, closed her door, got into the driver’s seat, and quickly started the engine.

In the car, Clara tried calling Seth, but there was no answer. ’He’s probably busy,’ she thought, so she didn’t try again.
