Chapter 613: Chapter 610: What Am I? A Cripple?
"But Sarah doesn’t love you. And as for why you insist on marrying her, I doubt it’s because of love. You and Sarah didn’t know each other before. Love at first sight? I don’t believe it." Clara Grant shook her head.
"And why not?" A faint smile still played on Ewan Stratton’s lips, but it held an indescribable wickedness. "I heard that before Mrs. Quinn and Mr. Quinn were married, you weren’t childhood sweethearts, nor were you deeply in love. Don’t tell me you two didn’t fall in love at first sight either?"
"It doesn’t matter if we were or not. We’re not like you! You—you’re..." Clara Grant’s gaze fell to his wheelchair, but she couldn’t bring herself to say he was a cripple. Even though she disliked Ewan Stratton and didn’t want Sarah to marry him, she couldn’t bring herself to be so rude to someone with a disability.
But Ewan Stratton finished her sentence for her. "I’m what? A cripple?"
His expression remained unchanged as he said the word, but a shadow fell over his eyes. "I never would have guessed, Mrs. Quinn. You appear so pure and noble, yet you’re just another commoner who wears colored glasses, discriminating against others so casually."
"Mr. Stratton!" Seth Quinn, who had been silent at her side, couldn’t help but interject coldly to defend his wife. "Watch your tongue!"
"My tongue? What about it? Was I wrong?" Ewan Stratton looked at Seth Quinn, still smiling.
"Of course you’re wrong! It’s not for an outsider to criticize what my wife says or does. Even if she had called you a cripple, you would have deserved it! Besides, she didn’t even say the word."
"Hah," Ewan Stratton finally scoffed aloud. "I never expected the great President Quinn to be the type who spoils his wife rotten."
Seth Quinn raised an eyebrow. "What, you got a problem with that?"
Ewan Stratton shrugged and said nothing.
Clara Grant looked at Ewan Stratton and continued, "Mr. Stratton, I didn’t mean to offend you, and I’m not discriminating against you. I’m just looking out for Sarah as her good friend.
Do you know what the most tragic thing for a woman is? It’s when she can’t even make her own decisions about her marriage. No woman wants to marry a man she doesn’t love.
So, if you would be willing to let Sarah go, I would be eternally grateful, and I’m sure Sarah would be grateful to you for the rest of her life."
Ewan Stratton took a slow sip of tea. "And what would I do with gratitude? Can’t eat it, can’t drink it, and it can’t be my wife."
"You...!" Clara Grant was clearly taken aback by his stubbornness. "Mr. Stratton, can you please tell me why it has to be Sarah?"
"There’s no particular reason. I suppose she just caught my fancy." With that, Ewan Stratton smiled again. "But if Mrs. Quinn doesn’t buy that, let’s just say that at the exact moment I needed a wife, she happened to cross my path.
Besides, even though I’m a cripple, there are plenty of women fighting to marry me. But she’s different. She’s doing everything in her power to refuse. And you, Mrs. Quinn, are also trying every trick in the book to make me give up on the idea of marrying her.
As a result, my desire to marry her has only grown stronger. So, when it comes to the fact that it *has* to be her... well, you share some of the credit for that."
’So that’s the kind of man Ewan Stratton is,’ Clara Grant thought, truly at a loss for words. ’The harder something is to get, the more it piques his interest and fuels his desire to conquer!’
’If I had known, I should have told Sarah to act like all those other women—to fight, beg, cry, and scream for the chance to marry him. Then he never would have noticed her at all!’
