A Hitman's Guide To Becoming A Hero
Chapter 259: End Of The Vacation [Edited]
The morning tide rolled gently against the white sands of the cove, carrying the faint, sweet scent of blossoming coastal jasmine and damp limestone.
After fourteen days of unbroken sunshine, tropical storms, night markets, and lantern festivals, the final morning at the Sovereign Crest Compound had arrived.
Down at the private wooden pier, the Association’s chartered high-speed ferry was already moored. Its twin white hulls bobbed in the emerald water with the low, steady rumble of diesel engines, while the crew loaded the luggage carts up the wide rear ramp.
Nectron was handling the heavy lifting with effortless ease, carrying four oversized equipment cases under each arm as if they were empty cardboard boxes. Beside him, Vixen was helping with the mooring lines, while Julie sat on top of an aluminum Pelican case near the gangway, frantically reviewing her final batch of video logs and organizing photo albums on her tablet.
Marina walked down the wooden boardwalk wearing a light traveling coat, holding a basket of fresh island fruit and baked bread for the crossing. She paused near the edge of the dock, taking a deep breath of the ocean breeze, looking back at the sunlit villa on the cliffside with a serene, contented smile.
"Two weeks went by faster than I thought," Marina murmured, turning to look at Nicholas.
Nicholas stood at the foot of the ferry ramp, dressed in clean black denim, a fitted charcoal henley, and his lightweight utility jacket. His hands were tucked casually into his pockets, his posture relaxed, and his dark blue eyes took in the sparkling bay with quiet satisfaction.
His body had fully healed. The internal fractures were gone, his Qi circulation was completely restored, and for the first time in two lifetimes, his mind felt clear of the constant, grinding pressure of survival.
"The time was well-spent," Nicholas replied softly.
A loud, energetic clatter of small sandals slapped rapidly down the wooden planks.
"MAKE WAY FOR THE HIGH RECONNAISSANCE SQUAD!"
Katie came sprinting down the pier, clutching a small woven treasure pouch tied with red string. She wore her favorite denim overalls, her straw sun hat bouncing against her back, and her face was flushed with pure, unadorned excitement.
She skidded to a halt directly in front of Nicholas, planting her feet wide and puffing out her chest like a victorious general addressing the council.
"Nicholas, behold!" Katie proclaimed, reaching into the pouch and pulling out a pristine, palm-sized nautilus shell.
The shell was a natural work of art, spiraled in warm amber and creamy white bands, polished completely smooth by years of ocean tides without a single chip or crack. It gleamed brilliantly under the morning sun.
"I found this in the deepest tidal crevice on the eastern reef," Katie declared, holding it high in the air for everyone on the dock to witness. "Julie looked at it and said it’s really pretty! Therefore, by maritime law, I am officially the undisputed beach champion of the Maro family!"
Nicholas knelt down on one knee, bringing himself level with his little sister. He looked at the perfect shell, then at her proud, beaming face.
"It’s a clean specimen, Katie," Nicholas said, reaching out to gently adjust the strap of her straw hat. "A genuine nautilus. No cracks, no barnacles."
"Does this mean I outranked you in beach operations?" Katie asked, her round eyes sparkling with mischievous hope.
"You found the best shell on the island," Nicholas admitted, a rare, genuine warmth softening the sharp lines of his face. "The title is yours."
"VICTORY!" Katie cheered, spinning around in a joyful circle before bolting up the ferry ramp. "Marina! Nectron! Nicholas conceded the championship! Prepare the victory fruit snacks!"
Marina laughed softly, shaking her head as she followed the little girl aboard. "Don’t run on the metal stairs, Katie! You’ll scrape your knees!"
A low, deep horn blast echoed across the cove as the ferry slipped its moorings.
The powerful waterjets engaged beneath the stern, churning the turquoise water into a wide trail of frothing white foam as the vessel glided out of the private bay and into the open ocean.
Up on the top observation deck, the high-altitude sea breeze was crisp and cool, whipping through the open railings.
Nicholas stood at the stern rail, watching the emerald peaks of the Azure Archipelago slowly shrink against the horizon. The sun was climbing higher into a vast, unbroken blue sky, casting diamonds of light across the endless water.
A pair of light footsteps approached from the companionway stairs.
Selena stepped onto the open deck, leaning against the teak railing beside him.
She had changed back into her tailored dark traveling trousers and a fitted navy blazer, but the strict, impenetrable armor of the Association supervisor was no longer there. Her dark hair was left loose, dancing freely in the ocean wind, and around her left wrist, the dark volcanic stone bracelet rested comfortably against her skin.
She looked out over the receding atolls, letting out a long, peaceful breath.
"The mainland bureau already sent three priority briefings to my terminal," Selena said, though there was no stress or urgency in her voice. "The High Council wants a full debriefing on the southern border logistics, the media wants an exclusive interview regarding the broadcast ratings, and Larry’s legal team is still throwing tantrums in the magistrate court."
"Standard noise," Nicholas said quietly, not looking away from the sea.
"Standard noise," Selena agreed with a faint, knowing smirk.
She turned her head, looking at Nicholas’s profile against the vast, open sky.
The stoic, solitary figure who had once treated every conversation like an extraction protocol and every human connection like a liability had changed. He was still sharp, still lethal, and still relentlessly practical—but the shadows in his eyes had receded, replaced by something grounded, steady, and alive.
"Thank you, Nicholas," Selena said softly, her voice carrying a tenderness that the open wind couldn’t wash away.
Nicholas turned his dark blue eyes to look at her. "For what?"
"For bringing us here," she said, looking down at the dark volcanic beads on her wrist, then back into his eyes. "For making sure Marina and Katie had their summer. And... for letting me be a part of it."
Nicholas looked at her, the usual flat line of his mouth curving into the easiest, most unburdened smile he had ever worn.
"You’re on the permanent roster, Supervisor," Nicholas murmured, his voice deep and warm. "There’s no opting out now."
Selena’s heart gave a soft, familiar flutter.
She didn’t offer a sarcastic retort. She didn’t hide behind protocol.
Without a word, Selena reached over the wooden railing, letting her fingers slide gently into his.
Her touch was warm, soft, and completely unafraid.
Nicholas looked down at their joined hands for a brief second.
He didn’t pull away.
Instead, he turned his hand over, his long, calloused fingers closing gently, firmly around hers, locking their hands together against the open ocean breeze.
Beneath the deck, the laughter of Katie, Marina, Julie, and Nectron drifted up through the open vents, full of life, warmth, and the promise of home.
Ahead of them lay the mainland, the High Council, the rogue duplicate, and whatever battles the future held.
Nicholas closed his eyes for a moment, feeling the heat of the sun on his face, the steady rhythm of the ship cutting through the waves, and the warmth of the hand held securely in his own.
He was ready.
