A Hitman's Guide To Becoming A Hero

The putter of a diesel engine echoed across the southern cove as the local constabulary’s patrol boat pulled up beside the limestone ledge.

The middle-aged constable hopped onto the wet rocks, gripping his standard-issue sidearm with both hands. Four local deputies followed close behind, wearing heavy tactical vests and carrying riot shields, their faces tense as they approached the narrow cave entrance.

"Stay sharp!" the constable whispered, creeping toward the narrow cave fissure. "If Bane charges that water cannon, drop behind the shields immediately!"

They slipped through the rocky opening, moving cautiously through the damp corridor until they finally reached the dry-dock chamber.

When they rounded the corner into the dry-dock chamber, they stopped dead in their tracks.

There was no roaring water blast. There was no hostage standoff. Tide-Cutter Bane lay flat on his stomach across the rusted metal roof of the central shipping container, snoring heavily.

His crustacean armor had been shattered into pieces, his knees were bound with reinforced zip-cuffs, and his wrists were locked neatly behind his back. Beside the container sat three stacks of missing fishing nets, two dozen stolen lobster pots, and four crates of expensive island spirits, all completely untouched.

A yellow sticky note was slapped onto Bane’s forehead, written in neat, elegant ballpoint:

Impure neutralized. Stolen harbor assets accounted for. Have a pleasant festival.

The constable stared at the note, then at the unconscious brute. Slowly, he lowered his sidearm and let out a long, trembling breath before breaking into disbelieving laughter.

"Gary’s lobster traps," a young deputy gasped, running a hand over the recovered crates. "Every single one of them... Who did this? Did the mainland bureau send an elite squad without telling us?"

"I don’t care if Prime Nectron himself flew down from the clouds," the constable chuckled, waving his men forward with handcuffs and stretchers. "The bastard is caught, the docks are safe, and the lantern festival is back on. Radio the harbor master! Tell them Port Azure is open for business!"

A mile up the coast, far away from the cheering police boat, the cobblestone streets of Port Azure were alive with morning light and the smell of sweet baking.

Nicholas and Selena walked side by side down the shaded market arcade, their light clothes still spotless despite the trip through the cave.

They emerged onto the sunny limestone ledge beneath a brilliant blue sky. The warm ocean breeze carried the faint sound of festival drums from the village harbor.

Outside an old stone bakery, an elderly woman in a flour-dusted apron was setting out a wide wooden tray filled with freshly baked island cinnamon rolls. Glazed with coconut sugar and crushed roasted macadamia nuts, the golden pastries filled the street with a warm, buttery aroma.

Nicholas stopped by the window. "Six rolls," he said, handing the baker a silver coin.

"Make it eight," Selena corrected with a faint smile, resting her hands on the wooden counter.

"Katie will eat two before the napkins even hit the table."

"Eight, ten, whatever you like, my lovely young folks!" the baker beamed, packing the steaming rolls into a brown paper box tied with natural twine. "The harbor just broadcasted an emergency bulletin! That horrible Bane was captured in the southern bluffs! No more broken boats, no more protection fees! God bless whoever broke that monster’s shell!"

"Good news for the village," Nicholas replied mildly, taking the warm box in one hand.

"A true community miracle," Selena agreed with a straight face, giving the baker a polite nod before turning to walk with Nicholas.

They stepped away from the busy plaza, taking the scenic cliffside walking path that led back to the Sovereign Crest Compound.

"A community miracle," Nicholas echoed, glancing sideways at her with a dry smirk. "Is that the official Association term for a shock dart to the knee?"

"It’s an industry term for exceptional civic cooperation," Selena replied smoothly, bumping her shoulder lightly against his. "And it earned us fresh pastries. That’s a successful mission in any handbook."

By the time they reached the compound, the sun was high in the sky, turning the private cove below into a glittering expanse of turquoise.

Down at the private floating dock, the catamaran’s diesel engine sputtered to a halt.

Marina walked down the gangway holding a wide sun hat in one hand and a basket of fresh island fruit in the other. Behind her, Katie came sprinting up the wooden dock like an energetic projectile, clutching her clear plastic bucket with both hands.

"NICHOLAS! SELENA!" Katie yelled at the top of her lungs, her small sandals slapping rapidly against the teak planks. "WE LOCATED THE ANCIENT SEASHELL FORMATIONS!"

She bounded up the terrace stairs, sliding to a halt in front of the outdoor breakfast table. She hoisted the plastic bucket high in the air, showing off a collection of smooth pink conch shells, polished green sea glass, and glittering white coral fragments.

"Look!" Katie demanded, pointing at a large, spiraled shell with a pearlescent shine. "This is the Emperor Shell! Julie said it grants three wishes regarding dessert portions! Marina agreed to one extra scoop of coconut ice cream!"

"That sounds like a fair treaty," Nicholas said, sitting down at the wooden patio table and opening the box of warm cinnamon pastries.

Katie’s eyes practically bugged out of her head at the sight of the glazed rolls. "PASTRIES! The Emperor Shell is already working!"

"Wash your hands first, sweetie," Marina said, stepping onto the terrace with a warm, relaxed smile. She set her hat on a lounge chair and walked over to give Nicholas a gentle pat on the shoulder.

"Did you two have a quiet afternoon? Did you find the parts for the water filter?"

"The pressure issue was completely resolved," Selena said smoothly, sitting across from Marina and taking a sip of fresh orange juice. "Just a minor blockage in the main line. It cleared out easily."

Nicholas took a bite of his pastry, his face an unreadable mask of innocent composure. "The drainage is back to standard capacity."

"Well, you two missed absolutely nothing on the water," a dramatic, exhausted voice groaned from the hallway.

Julie stumbled onto the patio, practically collapsing into an outdoor lounge chair with her pink bucket hat pulled down over her forehead. She dropped her waterproof camera gimbal onto the cushions with a heavy sigh.

"Three hours," Julie lamented, throwing her arms out in theatrical despair. "Three entire hours on a high-speed catamaran, and what did I get? Crystal clear water. Happy dolphins jumping in a straight line. Katie singing nursery rhymes to a sea turtle. Zero drama. Zero conflict. The video algorithm is going to starve!"

"You’re complaining because our boat tour was peaceful?" Vixen asked, walking out with Nectron, both of them grabbing warm cinnamon rolls from the box.

"Peace is terrible for views, Vixen!" Julie groaned, rubbing her temples. "Where is the sudden storm? Where is the rogue pirate fleet? Where is the mysterious sea beast bursting out of the depths to give our heroes a dramatic action shot? We are on an island! Something interesting is supposed to happen!"

Nectron chuckled around a massive mouthful of pastry, leaning back against the terrace railing. "I don’t know, Julie. I think the island is plenty interesting. The cinnamon on these is incredible."

Across the sunlit breakfast table, Selena picked up half a pastry, her dark eyes drifting toward Nicholas.

Nicholas met her gaze over his coffee cup.

A faint smirk touched the corner of Nicholas’s mouth, and Selena answered with a knowing smile as the festival drums drifted across the warm afternoon air.
