Karl remained seated on the plush, oversized couch, allowing the quiet atmosphere of the upscale apartment to settle completely around him. The profound silence of the spacious room was broken only by the faint, rhythmic hum of city traffic drifting up from the busy streets far below the thick glass windows.

He adjusted his posture against the soft cushions, feeling slightly out of place in his simple street clothes amidst the high-end, minimalist decor.

A moment later, Miss Vera returned from the adjacent kitchen.

She carried yet another sleek silver tray holding two crystal glasses of ice water, a bottle of sparkling cider, and a delicate porcelain bowl filled with an assortment of roasted nuts. Vera set the heavy tray down on the low glass coffee table before taking a seat on the couch directly next to him. She positioned herself close enough that the warmth radiating from her body was palpable.

She smoothed down the fabric of her elegant silk dress, her movements carrying a nervous, entirely uncharacteristic energy that contrasted sharply with her usual confident demeanor.

"Thank you for staying, Karl," she said, gracefully offering him a glass of water.

Her voice was smooth and practiced, but it noticeably lacked the usual commanding, teasing edge she carried so effortlessly while working in the university infirmary.

"Thank you for the drink," Karl replied, reaching out and accepting the glass.

The condensation transferred a sudden, biting chill to his fingertips. He took a slow, deliberate sip, letting the cold liquid soothe his throat, and allowed the silence to stretch for a brief moment. He looked directly at her, noting the subtle tremor in her hands.

"You put up a very convincing act at the university," Karl continued, setting his glass down on a coaster. "The confident, untouchable school nurse who has everything entirely figured out. But I can tell you are lonely. I can see that you are hurt, and you have been for a while now. I just do not know exactly why."

Miss Vera froze completely, her breath hitching painfully in her throat. Her eyes widened, a flash of pure, unadulterated vulnerability breaking through her carefully constructed facade.

She was completely surprised that he had noticed the deep cracks in her armor, despite the flawless, professional act she put up every single day at the clinic.

Using the excuse to get water did not work so well, seeing as he was saying and asking the same thing again.

"I..." she started, her voice breaking on the single syllable.

She looked away, staring blankly at the polished surface of the coffee table as if searching for an escape. "I did not think anyone could see that. I thought I was hiding it perfectly."

"Tell me what is having you so worried all the time," Karl pressed gently, leaning in just a fraction closer to ensure she felt his undivided attention.

Miss Vera let out a long, shaky sigh, her rigid shoulders dropping as the heavy weight of her secret finally became far too much to carry alone in silence.

"It is a man," she confessed, the words tumbling out of her in a desperate, breathless rush. "A man I dated for a while in the past. We broke up, but he will not just let me be. He refuses to accept it. He follows me around the city, showing up uninvited at places he has absolutely no business being."

"Why don’t you just cut him off completely?" Karl asked, his brow furrowing in genuine concern. "Go to the police and file a report."

"I can’t," she whispered, a bitter, thoroughly defeated tone lacing her words. "He is extremely close to my family. They all absolutely love him. They want us to marry and merge our lives. They completely refuse to see what he really is behind closed doors."

"And what exactly is he?" Karl asked, his voice steadying her.

"He is cruel, Karl," she said, looking back up at him with wet, glossy eyes that threatened to spill over. "He is a cheat and a manipulator. He barely cares about me as a person at all. He spends every waking second working on his family’s corporate empire. He bought the company from my mother right after my father died. He only views me as his personal property, a pretty trophy to collect alongside his endless business acquisitions."

Karl felt a cold, hard knot form instantly in his stomach. "What kind of company does he run?"

"It is a massive software development firm," she explained, wiping a stray tear from the corner of her eye with her free hand. "They make complex support algorithms, server infrastructure, and anti-cheat mechanisms. Specifically, software meant for helping run massive virtual reality games."

She paused, taking a ragged breath, her gaze dropping to her lap. "Games exactly like Horizona Online."

Karl completely stopped breathing for a fraction of a second.

Horizona Online.

The words hung heavily in the air between them, ringing in his ears like a sudden alarm bell. The very game that dictated his entire current existence. The digital world where he made his living, the place where he was a reigning king, and the exact location where Charlotte and Raziel resided. He had expected her tragic story to involve some mundane, arrogant rich kid in a tailored suit, not a corporate titan directly tied to the servers of Horizona Online.

’The world is entirely too small,’ Karl thought, fighting to maintain his blank expression despite the shock rippling through his mind. ’Of all the tech companies in the district, of all the games on the market. It had to be this one.’

Karl looked at Miss Vera, his mind spinning rapidly as it tried to process the sheer scale of the coincidence. The silence stretched between them, thick and heavy with unspoken implications.

He was genuinely confused about what to say for a long while. Stepping into this mess meant painting a massive target on his back for a man with endless resources, a man who possessed direct ties to the very game that funded Karl’s survival.

From out of nowhere, Miss Vera shifted her weight on the couch, pulling him violently out of his spiraling thoughts. Her dark eyes searched his face, desperately looking for a solid anchor in the storm she had just unleashed.

"Karl," she asked softly, her voice barely above a desperate whisper. "Are you seeing anyone at the moment?"

The question caught him entirely off guard. He blinked, pushing the thoughts of Horizona Online to the back of his mind.

"No," Karl answered honestly, shaking his head to clear it. "I am not seeing anyone."

Miss Vera leaned forward, closing the physical distance between them until he could feel the faint, nervous warmth of her breath against his skin. Her gaze dropped to his lips for a lingering second before flicking back up to meet his eyes.

"Then how do you intend to help me, Karl?" she asked, her voice trembling violently with a chaotic mixture of fear and absolute, terrifying hope. "With this impossible situation, now that I have told you everything... what can you possibly do?"

Karl thought about it for a while.

The logical, survival-driven part of his brain screamed at him to walk away. He had no business fighting a corporate stalker. But as he looked down at the beautiful, broken woman sitting mere inches away from him, a completely different thought crossed his mind.

She did not need a superhero right now. She needed to feel safe. She needed an anchor.

A pale blue translucent screen suddenly unfolded in the very center of his vision, cutting through the dim lighting of the room.

He looked right past the glowing text, focusing entirely on the living, breathing woman sitting in front of him.

He leaned forward as well, his movements slow and deliberate, giving her every opportunity to pull away if she wanted to. He closed the remaining gap until his lips were hovering only inches away from hers, completely invading her space in the best way possible.

The tension in the room spiked, the air growing incredibly thick and charged with a magnetic pull.

"I always found you incredibly beautiful," Karl murmured, his voice dropping into a low, resonant cadence that vibrated in the narrow space between them.

"But you were always so far away from me at the same time. You were the untouchable school nurse, walking the halls with perfect posture and a teasing smile. I couldn’t do anything about it back then. I couldn’t bridge that gap."

Miss Vera let out a ragged, emotional gasp. The careful walls she had spent years building around her guarded heart completely shattered, crumbling into dust right there on the cushions.

"Make me feel something," she pleaded, a desperate, tearing sound escaping the back of her throat. Her fingers dug into the fabric of his jacket. "Please, Karl. Make me feel something I haven’t been able to feel in years. I need you. I have always needed you."

They kissed right there on the couch.

Karl reached up, his large hands gently cupping her warm cheeks, his thumbs resting just beneath her cheekbones to hold her steady.

The kiss was clumsy for the first split second, fueled by years of repressed tension and immediate, desperate need.

Miss Vera made a soft, breathless sound against his mouth, her hands flying up to grip his shoulders as if she were drowning in a turbulent ocean and he was the only solid thing left in the entire world.

A single, hot tear dripped from her eye, rolling down her cheek and wetting Karl’s thumb.

For the first time in who knows how long, she finally felt truly needed. She felt truly, completely loved. The cold, mechanical grip of her ex-boyfriend faded into the background, completely overwritten by the warm, grounding presence of the man holding her face.

Karl hesitated for a brief moment, his lack of romantic experience flaring up in his mind, but he quickly pushed it aside and found his rhythm.

He adjusted his angle, kissing her deeper, pouring every ounce of comfort and reassurance he possessed into the gesture. He made absolutely sure she felt entirely safe and protected in his hands.

Miss Vera leaned entirely into his touch, her body going soft and pliant against him. The kiss slowed down, transitioning from frantic desperation to a deep, lingering intimacy that spoke volumes without a single word being uttered.
