A Gamer's System: My Team of Beauties as the Strongest Jungler.
Chapter 36: Making miss vera feel loved.
The soft, ambient light of the living room cast long shadows across the polished hardwood floor.
Karl sat back against the plush fabric of the expensive couch, letting his muscles finally unwind.
The apartment was impeccably clean, possessing the kind of curated elegance that usually belonged in magazines, but it still felt lived-in. The faint, intoxicating scent of Miss Vera’s perfume lingered in the air, mixing effortlessly with the warm, savory aroma of whatever she had left roasting in the kitchen oven.
He listened to the muffled clinking of glassware coming from the adjacent room. The quiet domesticity of the moment stood in stark contrast to the chaotic violence of the laundromat and the overwhelming roar of the tournament arena.
For a guy who had spent the last few weeks fighting for survival on multiple fronts, sitting on a comfortable couch while a beautiful woman fetched him a drink felt entirely surreal.
’She is very different outside of the school clinic,’ Karl thought, letting his gaze wander over the minimalist modern art hanging on the walls. ’At Barton, she is perfectly composed. Here, she seems almost fragile.’
[Charlotte notes that the woman’s heartbeat has been elevated since she opened the door.]
[Charlotte also notes that she does not like the way this woman looks at the Administrator.]
’Stand down, Charlotte,’ Karl replied silently, maintaining his blank expression. ’We are just having a conversation.’
[Raziel finds this mortal mating dance entirely tedious. He suggests you simply claim the territory and be done with it.]
’Both of you, quiet.’
A moment later, Miss Vera walked back into the living room.
She was carrying a sleek silver tray holding two crystal glasses of iced water, a small pitcher, and a ceramic bowl filled with assorted roasted nuts. She had managed to compose herself slightly in the kitchen, her breathing more even now, but the faint flush on her neck remained entirely visible.
She set the tray down on the low glass coffee table and took a seat on the opposite end of the couch. She tucked her legs beneath her, the smooth silk of her evening dress pulling slightly against her curves. She offered him a glass, the ice clinking softly against the crystal rim.
"Thank you," Karl said, taking the glass.
He took a slow sip, letting the cold water soothe his throat, before setting it down on a coaster. He looked directly at her, deciding not to dance around the issue any longer.
"So, why exactly did you ask me to come over tonight?"
Miss Vera picked up her own glass, her fingers tracing the delicate patterns etched into the crystal. She looked down at the water for a long moment before meeting his gaze.
"I wanted to talk, Karl. Just talk." She offered a small, hesitant smile that did not quite reach her eyes.
"You have been missing classes, acting distant, and showing up with fresh bruises. I was worried about you. And, to be entirely fair, if you did not want to speak to me, you would not have come all the way up to my apartment."
He leaned back, resting his arm along the back of the couch.
She had a point.
He could have easily ignored the hotel card she slipped into his pocket, but something about the quiet desperation hiding behind her confident facade had drawn him here.
"I have been busy," Karl admitted, keeping his voice level. "My mother works long hours, and I am the one who takes care of things at home. But recently, I had to start taking things much more seriously. I needed to earn a substantial amount of money, quickly."
Miss Vera tilted her head, a genuine look of surprise breaking through her guarded expression. "Money? Karl, if you were in financial trouble, you could have come to the school. There are grants, counseling programs—"
"I did not need a program," he interrupted gently. "I needed cash. So, I entered a gaming tournament in the central metropolis. I won it. The prize pool covered what I needed to handle, and it opened a few doors for me to make a stable living moving forward."
She stared at him, completely taken aback. The image she had constructed of him—a troubled, rebellious student skipping classes out of sheer apathy—shattered completely. In its place sat a mature, dangerously capable young man who carried the heavy weight of his family on his shoulders without a single complaint.
He spoke with an effortless, grounding authority that was completely devoid of the usual arrogance found in boys his age. The quiet strength radiating from him hit her like a physical force.
Miss Vera felt a sudden, overwhelming pull toward him.
The air in the room seemed to grow thick, her chest tightening as she looked at the sharp lines of his face and the calm, deadpan certainty in his eyes.
For a terrifying, breathless second, she wanted to drop her glass, cross the cushions, and confess exactly how much he affected her.
She wanted to tell him that she thought about him far more than any school nurse ever should.
She caught herself just in time, swallowing the dangerous words before they could spill past her lips. She pushed the terrifying surge of emotion down, forcing a shaky, warm smile to her face instead.
She uncrossed her legs and closed the physical distance between them on the couch. Reaching out, she gently placed her soft hand over his.
"You are incredible, Karl," she whispered, her voice dropping to a low, intimate register. "To carry all of that by yourself... it must be exhausting. But you do not have to do everything alone. Please, never hesitate to ask me for help. With your classes, with your mother, with anything. I am here for you."
Her thumb brushed lightly against his knuckles. The touch was warm, sending a subtle jolt of electricity up his arm.
Karl paused. He looked down at her hand resting on top of his, and then slowly brought his gaze back up to her face.
Behind her beautiful, encouraging smile, he could see the cracks. He could see the profound exhaustion hiding in the corners of her eyes. He had noticed it back in the infirmary, the way she built walls out of seduction and confidence to keep people from looking too closely at her actual life.
A pale blue translucent screen flickered to life in the very back of his mind.
[Quest Reminder: A Healer’s Heart.]
[Objective: Make Miss Vera feel truly loved and help her find the strength to leave her toxic relationship.]
[Status: Incomplete.]
He had seen the quest pop up hours ago, right before he decided to use the sleek black keycard. He had intentionally ignored it at the time, not wanting the system to dictate his personal interactions, but sitting here now, feeling the slight tremble in her hand, the system’s objective aligned perfectly with his own instincts.
Karl did not pull his hand away. Instead, he turned his palm upward, gently lacing his fingers through hers.
Miss Vera let out a quiet, startled gasp at the reciprocation. A deep flush of color rushed instantly to her cheeks, completely flustering her. She tried to maintain eye contact, but her gaze kept darting down to their intertwined hands.
"I appreciate the offer," Karl said, his voice dropping into a smooth, unyielding cadence that commanded the entire room. "But right now, I am not the one who needs help."
She blinked, her perfect posture faltering slightly. "What do you mean?"
"I mean that I would like to help you," Karl told her, his thumb slowly tracing the back of her hand. "You put on a very convincing performance at the school. You act like you have the entire world figured out. But the truth is, you are hurting. You are lonely, and you are tied down to something deeply toxic that is slowly draining the life out of you."
Miss Vera completely froze. The warm flush on her face drained away, leaving her pale and entirely speechless. Her heart hammered a frantic, terrified rhythm against her ribs.
"I do not know the exact details yet," Karl continued, leaning in just a fraction closer, ensuring she felt the absolute, unwavering certainty in his presence. "But I know you are trapped. And I know you deserve far better than whatever it is you go home to when you are not playing the confident nurse."
She stared at him, her lips parted in utter shock.
The carefully constructed walls she had spent years building around her private life were currently being dismantled by a twenty-one-year-old student who had just effortlessly taken the lead in her own living room.
"How..." Miss Vera whispered, her voice trembling so badly she could barely form the word. "Karl, how could you possibly know that?"
Karl held her gaze, refusing to let her look away, leaving the question hanging heavily in the quiet room, with the candles on the shelf burning brightly.
