A Bumpy Road to Power
Chapter 1058 - 1058:
It seemed that Dirk Carter's puzzled look was noticed.
Hadley Thorne patted him on the shoulder and said, "Comrade Carter, you've only been in our Silverwood City for a short time, so some situations you're still not quite aware of. When Lane Quincy came from Avon County back then, he had been working in the political and legal system ever since. The entire political and legal system of our Silverwood City was essentially cultivated by Quincy. Only Mountridge County was overseen by Comrade Astrid Giles back then, without much connection to Quincy."
At this point,
Dirk Carter suddenly had an epiphany.
Everything seemed to make sense.
The evidence provided by Farrell Lowell indicated that Lane Quincy indeed contacted him through some method.
The assassination of Brent Lowell was carried out by a policeman.
Given Lane Quincy's considerable influence in the political and legal system, it's not surprising he knew a police officer.
All of this almost pinpoints Quincy within the chain of evidence.
Facing such an outcome,
Hadley Thorne was naturally thrilled.
After all, Lane Quincy has always been Colter Hall's right-hand man.
Once Quincy is captured, Hall's power will undoubtedly suffer significantly.
Next, it will greatly assist Thorne in controlling the situation in Silverwood City.
This is the reason why Hadley Thorne is so invested.
Ring ring ring.
Dirk Carter's phone suddenly rang.
Looking at the number, it was Elbert Rivers calling.
Carter moved to a corner and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Leader, quite a few people from the Mountridge County Police Department have come; they say the city committee ordered them to take charge of Brent Lowell."
Rivers' tone seemed urgent.
"That's true,"
Carter replied.
Rivers was stunned, asking, "Should our people withdraw then?"
Carter paused for a moment and said, "No retreat, stay in the ward. Until I'm there, you are not to hand over Brent Lowell to anyone, remember, I mean to anyone!"
"Yes, I guarantee the task will be completed!"
Rivers said solemnly over the phone.
Following that,
Carter gestured to Heath Woods.
"Comrade Woods, you handle things here. Please help me deal with Secretary Thorne, and if he asks where I've gone, just say you don't know."
"Leader, what are you planning to do?"
Woods asked.
Clenching his teeth, Carter said, "Interrogate Brent Lowell urgently, the whole matter feels irregular."
"Alright."
Woods nodded and walked into the base's entrance.
...
Meanwhile,
In Lane Quincy's home.
It was already very late.
But he didn't feel sleepy at all.
After much consideration, he felt today's decision was made somewhat hastily.
Killing someone isn't a small matter.
Even if Farrell Lowell succeeded, he'd unjustly bear the guilt of masterminding murder; why take such a big risk?
He truly didn't like Dirk Carter.
But such hatred hadn't reached the level of murder.
Moreover, as of now, there's still no news from Farrell Lowell, making him increasingly restless.
It felt as if a rag had clogged his chest, nearly hindering his breathing.
Regret.
He genuinely regretted it.
Yet it was too late for anything.
The bow is already drawn; there's no turning back.
Now, he could only hope for some luck in Farrell Lowell's affairs.
Thinking this,
He stepped into the study.
Opened a side cabinet.
Inside was a statue of Guanyin.
He took three incense sticks, trying to light them with a lighter.
But even after multiple attempts, the lighter wouldn't ignite.
Without other options, he ransacked the drawers looking for a new lighter.
For some reason, the lighter which was usually within easy reach was nowhere to be found today.
Just as he was growing increasingly anxious.
Ring ring ring.
The phone suddenly rang.
Startling him.
So much that he snapped one of the incense sticks in half.
This was an ominous sign!
Lane Quincy picked up the phone, seeing it was a call from Artie.
Sighing heavily, he brought the phone up and whispered, "Hello, this is Lane Quincy."
"Secretary Quincy, it's bad, something happened, Farrell Lowell was captured."
On the phone was Artie's anxious voice.
Lane Quincy's heart sank instantly.
Clenching his teeth, he asked, "What happened?"
"A friend of mine from the Greshire County Discipline Inspection Commission told me that Farrell Lowell was not only captured by Dirk Carter, but he also confessed that it was under your orders. Moreover, there was an assassination attempt on Brent Lowell at the task force base, carried out by a policeman from the county police department. He's been arrested and also confessed it was... it was under your orders..."
"What? Police? Killing Brent Lowell? This wasn't my doing..."
Lane Quincy exclaimed in shock.
Whether or not Quincy did it, Artie wasn't sure.
Trying to steady his voice, Artie said, "Secretary Quincy, there's another piece of news. Secretary Thorne has arrived at the task force base in Greshire County. I've heard he's already reported to the State Committee, and the people sent to arrest you are on their way, I advise you to flee immediately..."
Right after saying these words.
With a click.
The call was disconnected.
As if his soul was ripped away.
Lane Quincy fell back into the chair.
His mind repeatedly echoed two words — "It's over."
At the same time.
The doorbell rang.
Lane Quincy knew, the people sent from the province to arrest him had arrived.
Thinking about a lifetime of achievements falling apart so haphazardly, pessimism and despair surged forth.
He ignored the persistent doorbell.
Instead, he got up and locked the study door from the inside.
Then took the belt from his robe.
Threaded it through the ceiling fan.
Tied a knot and tested its sturdiness.
Ensured it was strong enough to hang himself with.
Just as he was about to step onto the chair, ring ring ring, another round of phone ringing began.
He didn't want to answer it.
Because he assumed it was a call urging him to open the door.
Just as he was about to silence the phone.
He suddenly saw, the displayed number was actually Dirk Carter's.
Dirk Carter!
Was he seeing it wrongly?
Why call him at a time like this?
Could it be just to mock him?
If it weren't for Carter, would he have fallen to such depths?
Making up his mind.
He picked up the phone, held it to his ear, and hit the answer button.
Before Carter could speak, Lane Quincy roared, "Carter, are you satisfied now? Don't be too smug; I won't let you off even if I become a ghost."
"Secretary Quincy, I'm not calling to argue with you. I just want to ask you a few questions. Did you send Farrell Lowell to kill me?"
On the phone, Carter calmly asked.
Lane Quincy paused.
Gritting his teeth, he replied, "Yes!"
On the other end, Carter was silent for a moment, then continued to ask, "Did you send Cedric Stafford to kill Brent Lowell?"
"No, I don't know who Cedric Stafford is, and there's no reason to kill Brent Lowell."
Lane Quincy replied.
After another bout of silence.
Carter continued to ask, "Do you know Polly Linden? Have you had any private encounters with Brent Lowell?"
