Zombie Apocalypse: Creation
Chapter 906: Going out Guns Blazing
As the massive number of zombies approached, the heavy machine gun had been positioned right in the middle of the aircraft exit.
All twelve soldiers had their rifles up, with Xiaoyun and Zhangfei both with a pistol out in hand.
They were now up against the wall. One last-ditch effort as the zombies reached within shooting range.
"Zhangfei, how long is reinforcement going to take?"
Xiaoyun asked as the sheer number of zombies was causing second thoughts. There was no way for them to shoot them all.
Even if the zombies lined up in a single file line for them to mow down, they would run out of ammo before the zombies were done.
"Ten. No, five minutes. My dad will send everything to save me... He will never abandon me like this."
The answer caused Xiaoyun to dismiss the thought of running away with Houqin by making an invisible cloak on the spot.
"I really hope so."
With the zombies’ faces becoming close enough to see, the soldiers finally couldn’t resist pulling their triggers.
Bullets began raining towards the zombies.
Line after line, the zombies were being mowed down as all the soldiers opened fire at the same time.
Multiple zombies were being taken down with a single bullet. Yet the lines of zombies continued to advance forward.
"Zombies are coming from the east and west sides!"
As Houqin yelled out loud, both Xiaoyun and Zhangfei turned around at the same time to look behind.
"No. Fucking. Way."
A long, continuous black line of zombies was coming down from the small village, rapidly running down the abandoned farmland.
They were being surrounded from all three sides.
Not even a place for them to run away, as what they had thought originally was an endless flat plain actually had a small hill.
A dirt path was above the hill, several hundred feet in front of the plane.
"Everyone, keep shooting! We’ll hide in the plane when we run out of ammo! Anyone who runs away will be court-martialed on the spot!"
As Zhangfei turned off the safety on the pistol, not a single soldier dared to turn around as they kept holding down their trigger.
The heavy machine gun had started shooting, filling the gap when the soldiers needed to reload their rifles.
"T-The zombies are past the fences!" The pilot yelled as he stood alongside Houqin and the other two inside the aircraft.
Some of the soldiers finally couldn’t resist taking a look, only to see the zombies on either side now within two hundred steps.
"Major, we should get back in the plane. We still need time to close the plane’s door if we’re using it to stall time."
"Just a few more—"
Before Zhangfei could answer the pilot, several of the soldiers’ guns started making clicking noises.
No reload.
A few seconds later, more clicks came from the soldiers’ rifles. Everyone had run out of ammo as the zombies approached within fifty steps.
The heavy machine gun had stopped firing. Even Xiaoyun had run out of ’ammo’ in his pistol a long time ago.
"Everyone, come back in!"
Within seconds, everyone rushed back into the aircraft. The next thing they saw was the aircraft door starting to close.
More and more zombies were now within ten steps as the exit door tightly sealed back up to the ceiling.
Everyone could hear the loud stumbling on the ground, as if there was a tank mutant outside running towards the aircraft.
Soon, they could hear a loud bang and screeches.
The metal sheet of the aircraft was being hit over and over again as the zombies relentlessly banged their hands against it.
"Please, please, please hold it together." A young soldier quietly murmured as he hid behind one of the cargo pallets.
There was nothing much anyone could do. Everyone was in the cargo area, praying for the aircraft to hold out against the zombies.
"Xiaoyun, I’m really sorry about this."
As Zhangfei suddenly apologized out loud, his face looked extremely pale, as if he was scared and had lost all hope already.
"It’s fine. I figure something was going to go wrong on this trip... I just didn’t expect it to be so soon."
"Aren’t you scared of dying?"
One of the younger soldiers asked, unable to understand how calm Xiaoyun looked the whole time.
"I already lived long enough... Sorry this has to end like this a day after your wedding, Houqin."
Everyone watched as Xiaoyun wrapped his arms around his wife, whose face looked just as frightened as everyone else.
"I-It’s okay..."
"Zhangfei, just put a bullet in my head. I’d rather die than turn into a zombie."
"Me too."
"Same."
As more and more soldiers pleaded with Zhangfei to put his gun away, he shook his head before throwing it to the ground.
"It’s never loaded. Don’t even bother."
The comment shocked the soldiers a little, but none of them spoke up again as they all looked down in defeat.
"Xiaoyun, I-I don’t want to die."
Tears started to fall from Houqin’s face as she couldn’t keep up the act any longer. The constant banging noise was starting to cause cracks.
"It’s okay, it’s okay... We’re going to be fine."
No other words could come out of Xiaoyun’s mouth as he kept patting her on the head with his right hand.
Meanwhile, his left hand was already inside the backpack, waiting for the right moment to take out his invisible cloak.
Crack!
The windows started to show lines of cracks as everyone could see a literal zombie face banging its head at the bulletproof glass.
More and more dents appeared on the aircraft, with visible deformity on the metal sheet as it bent inward.
"To the cockpit!"
As the pilot led all the soldiers into the cockpit, Xiaoyun and Houqin both remained in their seats.
"Zhangfei, you aren’t going to the cockpit?" Xiaoyun questioned, seeing him sitting there all by himself.
"What difference would it make?"
"I guess you aren’t wrong."
As the scratches got sharper and the ground started to shake even harder, all three of them knew the mutants had arrived.
"It was nice knowing you, Xiaoyun."
"Nice knowing you too, Zhangfei."
Just as Xiaoyun was about to pull the invisible cloak out, Zhangfei suddenly pulled out a knife from his pocket.
The blade was right up against his neck. A single push and everything was going to be all over.
Yet, the knife fell onto the floor.
"I can’t do it... Xiaoyun, can you just shoot me? I know you have a second gun in your backpack."
"I’m not going to—"
Before Xiaoyun could reject Zhangfei’s demand, a sudden loud explosion could be heard from outside.
The entire plane shook, nearly flipping over to the side as another explosion shook the ground again.
"18th Air Brigade reporting... Major Zhangfei, are you still alive?"
As the walkie-talkie turned on, Zhangfei immediately rushed over to pick it up from the floor before answering back.
"Yes! I’m alive! I’m inside the Y-20 right now! We are currently surrounded by zombies! I need someone to come here!"
The transmission was cut short as another round of loud explosions went off in the distance, much further away from the aircraft.
"Affirmative. The helicopter will be here in one minute... I’m currently trying to deter the tank mutants from reaching your aircraft."
With the sudden turn of events, Xiaoyun quickly took out a whole rifle he had created on the spot from within his backpack.
"Zhangfei, go in the cockpit. I’ll hold them off for a minute."
"Are you sure—"
"I got this. Houqin, you go inside as well."
Seeing more and more lines appearing at the exit door, Zhangfei had no choice but to head over to the cockpit.
"Xiaoyun—"
"I got this. Trust me."
Houqin didn’t say another word as she ran into the cockpit, leaving him all alone at the cargo area.
What shocked everyone next was Xiaoyun pulling the door to the cockpit, slamming it shut as he leaned against it.
"Xiaoyun! What the fuck are you doing!"
As Zhangfei yelled in confusion from the cockpit, the outside lights began to shine through the gaps as the zombies had torn through the metal sheet.
The sharp claws had finally broken through the aircraft’s last defense as the first zombie reared its ugly head.
"Just one minute..."
Xiaoyun immediately raised his rifle, pulling the trigger, sending the bullet right towards the zombie’s cranium.
One after another, he precisely fired one bullet at a time, forcing the zombies to block each other from tearing a bigger gap.
Blood immediately splattered all over the floor as his strategy worked for a few seconds before the dead zombies were pushed in.
The head fell onto the plane’s floor, rolling down as another zombie from behind reared its ugly head through the gap.
Another bullet right into its cranium.
It dropped dead as another replaced it, pushing the gap even bigger as nearby zombies created another line for themselves.
All over the aircraft, the metal started to fall apart from each direction. There was even banging and screeching from the ceiling.
"Crap."
