“Next, I Set three cards, and activate Kinka-byo’s special effect. During the End Phase, it automatically returns to my hand.”
Kagemaru had just made up his mind to destroy that damned scrub, Kinka-byo, first. Then, out of nowhere, he heard Rowan, who had just finished Setting his cards, toss him one more line with a grin.
“Meow!!”
The next second, the pitch-black cat fiend wiggled its rear end at Kagemaru. It had hit him, mocked him, and now it bolted without a backward glance.
In an instant it became a streak of dark light and flew back into Rowan’s hand, becoming his fourth card.
“That damned cat has an effect like that too..!”
Kagemaru’s face darkened at once. He stared, seething, at the cards in Rowan’s hand.
He didn’t even get a chance to take revenge and destroy that scrub monster on his next turn!
That damned Duel Monster cat was every bit as infuriating as its master!
[Ding. Kagemaru’s Emotion Points +500]
Even Chancellor Sheppard, Professor Crowler, Chazz, and the others, who were only watching, felt it as though it were happening to them!
They could feel their blood pressure climbing…!
Kinka-byo’s monster effect really was the kind of trick you never saw coming, and a truly cheap one at that!
“But if Kinka-byo can return to the hand during the End Phase of every turn it’s summoned, doesn’t that mean Rowan can keep pairing it with the Mystic Piper in his Graveyard whenever he needs to, and draw at least one card from his Deck every single turn?!”
Bastion said it in sudden astonishment, as if something had just struck him.
At his words, Zane Truesdale, Jaden Yuki, Chazz, and the others all realized the chain of the combo at the same time!
Through Kinka-byo’s effect, Special Summon the Level 1 Mystic Piper from the Graveyard.
Then, just as Rowan had done, Tribute Mystic Piper as the cost and draw from the Deck.
When the turn ended, return Kinka-byo to the hand…
Burning through the Deck nonstop like that was practically the same as playing a Pot of Greed every single turn.
The more they thought about it, the stranger the expressions on the faces of Zane Truesdale, Atticus Rhodes, Bastion, and the rest became.
Good grief. Could this be the legendary “perpetual motion machine”?!
“You could never beat my Sacred Beasts with circus tricks like that!”
Inside the mechanical life-support machine far across the field, Kagemaru spat the words out, clearly irritated. He quickly forced his emotions back down.
Then he used his brainwaves to control the mechanical arm and draw a card from the Deck on the Duel Disk outside his machine!
“My turn, draw!”
After a glance at the card he had drawn, Kagemaru immediately guided the arm to place a card on the Duel Disk.
“I activate the Spell Card Pot of Greed from my hand, and draw two cards from my Deck!”
The mechanical arm drew two more cards from the Deck, and the green Pot of Greed that had appeared on the field in front of him shattered apart.
Then, with a snort, Kagemaru had the arm lift the Duel Disk and flip open its Field Zone in an instant, and slot a card from his hand into it!
“Next, I activate the Field Spell Card Fallen Paradise from my hand!”
“Hummm!!”
Black mist rose all around them and spread swiftly across the entire field.
The great stretch of forest scenery south of Duel Academy vanished beneath the creeping mist.
In the blink of an eye, it had become a barren, lifeless valley!
Even the sky above had turned into a solid expanse of pitch darkness, thick with clouds!
“This field…?!”
Chancellor Sheppard and Professor Crowler looked around, their faces changing in shock.
It was practically like a dimension apart, the kind of space where a Shadow Duel was fought.
The entire island that Duel Academy stood on had vanished from their sight!
Only Rowan was not the least bit surprised. He had even grown somewhat used to it.
After all, the Shadow Duels he had fought before had been played out on fields just like this one. This time it was only a little bigger.
He was rather looking forward to what the old man would do next!
“This is the Sacred Beasts’ home ground! With this card’s effect, whenever any one of the Sacred Beasts is on the field, whether on my side or my opponent’s, the controller of this Field Spell can draw two cards from their Deck!”
Kagemaru’s aged voice rang out from inside the life-support machine, addressed to Rowan, right after he drew two more cards from his Deck.
“Rowan, even though you sealed away my first Sacred Beast, so that I cannot even use its effect to revive it from the Graveyard…”
“You still cannot stop the second of my Sacred Beasts!”
“Watch closely! I Set three Spell Cards on my field!”
At Kagemaru’s command, the mechanical arm of his life-support machine placed three Spell Cards onto the Duel Disk.
With a series of dull thumps, three giant face-down card projections rose up on the field in front of him.
“He just told us what kind of cards he’s Setting again!” Even Syrus, the academic dunce, noticed this and let out a despairing cry.
“Is the second Sacred Beast about to appear?!” Chancellor Sheppard, Zane Truesdale, Alexis Rhodes, and the others stared at the scene far across the field, their expressions grim.
As for the effects and power of the Sacred Beasts, they still knew almost nothing.
All they knew was the case of that unlucky first Sacred Beast, Uria, Lord of Searing Flames, who had just appeared and been swiped away from under Kagemaru’s nose by Rowan.
